Regioselective Synthesis of Trichloromethyl‐Substituted Salicylates and Cyclohexenones by One‐Pot Cyclizations of 1,3‐Bis(trimethylsilyloxy)buta‐1,3‐dienes

A variety of 6‐(trichloromethyl)salicylates (=2‐hydroxy‐6‐(trichloromethyl)benzoates) were prepared by TiCl₄‐mediated cyclization of 1,3‐bis(trimethylsilyloxy)buta‐1,3‐dienes with 1,1,1‐trichloro‐4,4‐dimethoxybut‐3‐en‐2‐one. The employment of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (Me₃SiOTf) as Lewis acid resulted in the formation of trichloromethyl‐substituted cyclohexenones. The cyclizations proceeded with good‐to‐very‐good regioselectivities.     

Size Matters! On the Way to Ionic Liquid Systems without Ion Pairing

Several, partly new, ionic liquids (ILs) containing imidazolium and ammonium cations as well as the medium‐sized [NTf₂]^? (0.230 nm³; Tf=CF₃SO₃^?) and the large [Al(hfip)₄]^? (0.581 nm³; hfip=OC(H)(CF₃)₂) anions were synthesized and characterized. Their temperature‐dependent viscosities and conductivities between 25 and 80 °C showed typical Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann (VFT) behavior. Ion‐specific self‐diffusion constants were measured at room temperature by pulsed‐gradient stimulated‐echo (PGSTE) NMR experiments. In general, self‐diffusion constants of both cations and anions in [Al(hfip)₄]^?‐based ILs were higher than in [NTf₂]^?‐based ILs. Ionicities were calculated from self‐diffusion constants and measured bulk conductivities, and showed that [Al(hfip)₄]^?‐based ILs yield higher ionicities than their [NTf₂]^? analogues, the former of which reach values of virtually 100 % in some cases.From these observations it was concluded that [Al(hfip)₄]^?‐based ILs come close to systems without any interactions, and this hypothesis is underlined with a Hirshfeld analysis. Additionally, a robust, modified Marcus theory quantitatively accounted for the differences between the two anions and yielded a minimum of the activation energy for ion movement at an anion diameter of slightly greater than 1 nm, which fits almost perfectly the size of [Al(hfip)₄]^?. Shallow Coulomb potential wells are responsible for the high mobility of ILs with such anions.     

Pseudilins: Halogenated,Allosteric Inhibitors of the Non‐Mevalonate Pathway Enzyme IspD

The enzymes of the non‐mevalonate pathway for isoprenoid biosynthesis have been identified as attractive targets with novel modes of action for the development of herbicides for crop protection and agents against infectious diseases. This pathway is present in many pathogenic organisms and plants, but absent in mammals. By using high‐throughput screening, we identified highly halogenated marine natural products, the pseudilins, to be inhibitors of the third enzyme, IspD, in the pathway. Their activity against the IspD enzymes from Arabidopsis thaliana and Plasmodium vivax was determined in photometric and NMR‐based assays. Cocrystal structures revealed that pseudilins bind to an allosteric pocket by using both divalent metal ion coordination and halogen bonding. The allosteric mode of action for preventing cosubstrate (CTP) binding at the active site was elucidated. Pseudilins show herbicidal activity in plant assays and antiplasmodial activity in cell‐based assays.     

Chiral bisimidazolium salts derived from amino acids and their palladium(II)- and platinum(II)-biscarbene complexes

We report new chiral bisimidazolium salts synthesized from naturally occurring l-amino acids. They served as precursors for bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes. The chiral imidazoles could be synthesized in good yields via a one-pot ring closing reaction, followed by esterification. The methylene bridged bisimidazolium iodide salts are accessible in moderate yields. Corresponding palladium(II)- and platinum(II)-NHC complexes could be synthesized and fully characterized, but do not show optical activity. We also report a solid state structure of one of the synthesized palladium(II) biscarbene compounds derived from alanine.     

Asynchronous sampling for ultrafast experiments with low momentum compaction at the ANKA ring

A high‐repetition‐rate pump–probe experiment is presented, based on the asynchronous sampling approach. The low‐α mode at the synchrotron ANKA can be used for a time resolution down to the picosecond limit for the time‐domain sampling of the coherent THz emission as well as for hard X‐ray pump–probe experiments, which probe structural dynamics in the condensed phase. It is shown that a synchronization of better than 1 ps is achieved, and examples of phonon dynamics of semiconductors are presented.
