Stereoselective synthesis of (+)-SCH 351448: a unique ligand system for sodium, calcium, and other cations

(+)-SCH 351448 (Na+ salt A) was synthesized employing ring-closing olefin metathesis reaction of an open diene diester intermediate for construction of the 28-membered macrodiolide structure. The open diene diester was prepared from the monomeric hydroxy carboxylic acid and two different olefin fragments. The monomeric hydroxy acid was synthesized via Julia-Julia coupling reaction of intermediates derived from the same olefinic fragments. Oxane units in these fragments were prepared by radical cyclization reactions of beta-alkoxyacrylates. Analogous SCH 351448 salts incorporating other mono- and divalent cations may be prepared. Under acidic conditions, SCH 351448 (Na+ salt A) was the most stable complex, but SCH 351448 (Ca2+ salt) and (Na+ salt B) appear to be physiologically important species.

Application of a modified simplex method to the multivariable optimization of a new FIA system for the determination of osmium

A methodology based on the coupling of experimental design and a modified simplex method is proposed for the optimization of a new flow injection-kinetic system for the spectrophotometric determination of Os (IV) with m-acetylchlorophosphonazo, which has for the first time been used as chromogenic reagent in the quantitative analysis of this element. An orthogonal array design is utilized to design the experimental protocol, in which six variables are varied simultaneously, and obtain the initial simplex using 25 experiments. A modified simplex method is applied to continuously optimize the data of the orthogonal array design; the search for optimum conditions of 6 variables using the modified simplex method required only 25 experiments. The efficiency and simplicity of the coupling of the experimental design and the modified simplex method are attractive for the development of new analytical methods. The method has been applied to the determination of Os (IV) in a refined ore as well as in a secondary alloy and provided satisfactory results.     

Pattern generation of biological ligands on a biodegradable poly(glycolic acid) film

The micropatterns of biological ligands (biotin and RGD peptides) were generated on a flat surface of biodegradable polymer, poly(glycolic acid) (PGA). The immobilization of biological ligands onto the surface of biodegradable polymers (especially aliphatic polyesters) is usually hampered by the absence of functionalizable groups on the polymer backbone. We demonstrate herein that PGA polymer films were modified by surface hydrolysis to introduce carboxylic acid groups on the film surfaces, which were subsequently used for patterning amine-terminated ligands by microcontact printing. Fluorescence microscopy was used to verify the pattern of biotin on the surface of the PGA films after complexation with fluorescein-conjugated streptavidin. In addition, the cellular micropatterns were obtained from micropatterns of RGD peptides on the surface-hydrolyzed PGA films.     

Anti-solvent assisted treatment for improved morphology and efficiency of lead acetate derived perovskite solar cells

An efficient solution-processable route employing Pb(Ac)₂ as lead source and anti-solvent treatment to achieve fully covered and homogenous perovskite films is reported.     

Well-defined star-shaped calcite crystals formed in agarose gels

Single crystals of calcite exhibiting a morphology of well-defined 8-armed stars, which evolved from original rhombohedral calcite crystals with their 8 points extending radially into eight arms, were produced by crystallization of CaCO3 in agarose gels.     

A study of thoria on the surface of gamma-Al2O3

The dispersion of thoria on the surface of gamma-Al2O3 and the surface properties of ThO2/gamma-Al2O3 samples, as well as the influence of the loading amount of thoria on the reduction behavior of copper oxide species, have been studied using XRD, XPS, FTIR, and TPR. The results indicate that the dispersion capacity of thoria, like that of ceria, is much lower than for two other tetravalent metal oxides, zirconia and titania, and the surface adsorption amount of the carbonyl compound and H2O slightly increases with increasing thoria loading. The different thoria loadings can influence the reduction behavior of the dispersed copper oxide by comparing the TPR results of CuO/ThO2/gamma-Al2O3 samples. In addition, the lower dispersion capacities of thoria and ceria on gamma-Al2O3 are tentatively discussed by considering the structural stability of the two oxides.
