The paper discusses a recently posed paradox in relativity concerning the speed of light as measured by an observer on board a rotating turn-table. The counter-intuitive problem put forward by F. Selleri concerns the theoretical prediction of an anisotropy in the speed of light in a reference frame comoving with the edge of a rotatiing disc even in the limit of zero acceleration. The paradox not only challenges the internal consistency of the special relativity theory but also undermines the basic tenet of the conventionality of simultaneity thesis of relativity. The present paper resolves the issue in a novel way by recasting the original paradox in the Galilean world and thereby revealing, in a subtle way, the weak points of the reasonings leading to the fallacy. As a background the standard and the non-standard synchronies in the relativistic as well as in the Galilean world are discussed. In passing, this novel approach also clarifies (contrary to often made assertions in the literature) that the so-called desynchronization of clocks cannot be regarded as the root cause of the Sagnac effect. Finally in spite of the flaw in the reasonings leading to the paradox Selleri's observation regarding the superiority of the absolute synchrony over the standard one for a rotation observer has been upheld.  相似文献

The intra-channel collision of optical solitons, with parabolic law nonlinearity, is studied in this paper by the aid of quasi-particle theory. The perturbation terms that are considered in this paper are the nonlinear gain and saturable amplifiers along with filters. The suppression of soliton–soliton interaction, in presence of these perturbations terms, is achieved. The numerical simulations support the quasi-particle theory.  相似文献

Chiral all-π-conjugated conducting polymers are of significant importance because of their promising aspects ranging from organic electronics, organic spin filters, efficient water splitting materials, magneto-optic materials to circularly polarized light emitters. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of the first series of diketopyrrolopyrrole based chiral low band-gap alternating copolymers. Alongside characterizations by UV and CD spectroscopy, AFM and FESEM were further performed to understand the morphology of the optically active polymers. The stereochemistry of the side-chains on TDPP unit played a pivotal role in determining chiroptical properties and supramolecular self-assembly of the copolymers in solution which lead to layer-by-layer helical morphology in solid-state. Interestingly, D-A intramolecular charge transfer transition showed Cotton effect with bimodal nature, which is remarkably stronger than the π-π* transition.  相似文献

The variational principle is employed to obtain the evolution of the parameters of Gaussian and super-Gaussian chirped solitons that propagates through multiple-core nonlinear optical fiber arrays. This is governed by the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrodinger's equation with strong dispersion management in the presence of linear coupling between the adjacent cores. Acenes that are twisted out of planarity are expected to display chiroptical properties. However, the effect of twisting on the chiroptical properties of acenes has not been investigated computationally or experimentally. Herein, we present a computational investigation of the chiroptical properties of anthracenes to pentacenes, combined with an experimental study using a series of helically locked acenes, twisted to different torsional angles in their enantiopure form. The lowest energy transition, which is relatively weak in acenes, becomes dominant in their circular dichroism spectra upon twisting. We find that the rotational strength of acenes consistently increases with increasing twist. The experimental data obtained from enantiopure tethered twistacenes show the same trend as the calculated result, with a strong Cotton effect and anisotropy factor, rendering twisted acenes as excellent chiroptical materials.  相似文献
