Synthesis of a natural insect repellent isolated from thrips

A convenient, high yield procedure for the synthesis of (11Z)-11,19-eicosadienyl acetate (1) has been developed. This compound shows strong repellent activity against ants.

Concentration and purification of orotic acid directly from whey with an expanded bed adsorption system

The development of an expanded bed process for the concentration and purification of orotic acid directly from whey is described. Different commercially available adsorbents were tested in series of pilot batch adsorption experiments to determine the most suitable separation system. Best results were achieved using a weak anion-exchange matrix. An elution protocol was established using MgCl2 as eluting agent to recover the adsorbed orotic acid with approximately 85% yield and 10-fold concentration. Purified orotic acid was precipitated under acid conditions with a yield of 95%.     

Improved synthesis of aza-bis(oxazoline) ligands

A straightforward synthesis of chiral aza-bis(oxazoline) (Azabox) ligands from commercially available amino alcohols is described. The new protocol allows access to previously reported Azabox ligands in considerably improved yields but also to new derivatives, including non-C2-symmetrical ones.     

Homotopy properties of certain complexes associated to spherical buildings

We show that the complex Opp Δ of ordered pairs of opposite simplices in a spherical building Δ is spherical, i.e., (n-1)-connected, wheren is the common dimension of Δ and Opp Δ. As a corollary we obtain that Opp Δ is even homotopy Cohen-Macaulay.

Pressure cell and combined cryostat/furnace for high‐pressure μSR studies

This paper outlines the design characteristics of a combined cryostat/furnace set‐up dedicated to high‐pressure μSR experiments using a cylindrical high‐pressure cell made of the high‐strength titanium alloy Ti‐6Al‐4V‐ELI. This set‐up provides the possibility to perform μSR measurements on samples with diameter of 12 mm and length of 35 mm in the temperature regime 3.7\Eleq T\Eleq 800\ K at hydrostatic pressures up to 800 MPa. Results for high‐pressure μSR experiments on Ni and \alpha ‐Fe are presented. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Morphisms Cohomology and Deformations of Hom-algebras

The purpose of this paper is to define cohomology complexes and study deformation theory of Hom-associative algebra morphisms and Hom-Lie algebra morphisms. We discuss infinitesimal deformations, equivalent deformations and obstructions. Moreover, we provide various examples.     

Atomic‐Resolution Three‐Dimensional Structure of Amyloid β Fibrils Bearing the Osaka Mutation

Despite its central importance for understanding the molecular basis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), high‐resolution structural information on amyloid β‐peptide (Aβ) fibrils, which are intimately linked with AD, is scarce. We report an atomic‐resolution fibril structure of the Aβ1‐40 peptide with the Osaka mutation (E22Δ), associated with early‐onset AD. The structure, which differs substantially from all previously proposed models, is based on a large number of unambiguous intra‐ and intermolecular solid‐state NMR distance restraints.
