Chemical, sensory and microbiological changes of gamma irradiated coconut cream powder

A study was carried out to determine optimum decontamination dose for a locally manufactured coconut cream powder. Samples were gamma irradiated (0–15 kGy) and ageing process was achieved using GEER oven at 60 °C for 7 days, which is equivalent to one-year storage at room temperature. Iodine value (IV), ranging from 4.8 to 6.4, was not affected by radiation doses and storage, however peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) generally increased with radiation doses. In most samples, peroxide value (meq/kg) reduced after storage, whilst the TBA (mg malonaldehyde/kg), indicator for product quality, slightly increased. The sensory evaluation conducted using 25 taste panellists indicated that scores on odour, creamy taste and overall acceptance for all irradiated samples at more than 5 kGy were significantly lower (P<0.05) than the control. However, the panellists could not detect any significant differences among the irradiation doses (P>0.05). All stored products were significantly different in colour, creamy taste, odour and overall acceptance (P<0.05) when compared to the non-stored non-irradiated control. Microbiological count of the samples prior to irradiation was in the range of 1×10²–1.7×10³ cfu/g with no detection of Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli. No microbial colonies were detected after irradiation. Based on the TBA and overall sensory acceptance, gamma irradiation of 5 kGy was found to be the optimum dose and lower doses can be considered to decontaminate coconut cream powder.     

Determination of glutathione in spruce needles by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry

For the determination of glutathione (GSH) and its oxidized form (GSSG) in spruce needles their electrospray mass and MS/MS spectra were recorded with an ion trap mass spectrometer (ITMS, LCQ, Finnigan) and a triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometer (TSQ, Quattro II, Micromass). A study of the stability of GSH in aqueous solutions shows the presence of dimeric and trimeric forms of GSH, as well as GSSG, GSH-sulfonate and GSH-sulfinic acid. The same components were also found in extracts of spruce needles. We developed an assay which is suitable for monitoring low concentrations of GSH and similar compounds in plant tissues, employing the sensitivity and specificity of LC/MS/MS. Preliminary results on the mass spectrometric determination of GSH in spruce needles are given.     

Microanalysis of catecholamines in human plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography with amperometric detection as compared with a radioenzymatic method

A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the quantitative determination of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine in human plasma. The method, which is based on adsorption of the catecholamines to alumina and, after liberation, separation on a microparticulate bonded strong cation-exchange resin and amperometric detection, has been optimized to give complete baseline separation of the substances of interest. Dihydroxybenzylamine, a nonendogenous catecholamine, is used as the internal standard. The detection limit is about 0.1 pmol for dopamine. Analysis of data obtained for norepinephrine and epinephrine from a total of 59 plasma samples showed a good correlation to the corresponding values obtained with a radioenzymatic method. Some results from normal and pathological conditions are compared.

Novel cotton cellulose by cationization during mercerization—part 2: the interface phenomena

Cationisation during the mercerisation process with an epihalohydrin results in novel cotton cellulose that gives a new dimension to cotton pre-treatment and finishing. The modified cotton retains all the beneficial properties of mercerised cotton with a change of the surface charge that ensures further quality improvement. The present paper deals with systematic investigations of the interface phenomena of cationised cotton fabric with an epihalohydrin; 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride during and after mercerisation process. The water, ionic surfactant and dyestuff adsorption, as well as surface free energy, electrokinetic potential, isoelectric point and point of zero charge determined according to the streaming current/streaming potential method; and specific amount of surface charge of modified cotton fabrics are researched.     

Sobolev spaces on Lie groups: Embedding theorems and algebra properties

Let G be a noncompact connected Lie group, denote with ρ a right Haar measure and choose a family of linearly independent left-invariant vector fields X on G satisfying Hörmander's condition. Let χ be a positive character of G and consider the measure ${\mu }_{\chi }$ whose density with respect to ρ is χ. In this paper, we introduce Sobolev spaces $L_{\alpha }^p({\mu }_{\chi })$ adapted to X and ${\mu }_{\chi }$ ($1<p<\infty$, $\alpha \ge 0$) and study embedding theorems and algebra properties of these spaces. As an application, we prove local well-posedness and regularity results of solutions of some nonlinear heat and Schrödinger equations on the group.
