It is shown that by appropriately choosing the periodicity of a blinking optical trap only larger sized colloidal spheres can be selectively trapped out of a mixed population. This happens because smaller sized, more agile, spheres escape out of the trap volume during the off period of the trap beam. Therefore, by scanning an array of blinking traps over a mixed sample, bigger spheres can be forced to move with the traps and eventually could be taken to the output side. Experimental demonstration of sorting between 1 μm and 2 μm diameter silica spheres is presented.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to control the unsteadiness of separation shock in a Mach 2 24° compression ramp-induced interaction using mechanical vortex generators (VG). Control devices in the form of an array of single-row delta-ramps were placed upstream of the interaction region and tested for two streamwise locations with respect to the boundary layer thickness (δ) at the interaction location and height ‘h’ of the delta-ramps, i.e., at 27.5δ or h/δ?=?0.65 and at 12.5δ or h/δ?=?0.26, respectively. Surface oil study revealed traces of streamwise counter-rotating vortex pairs generated downstream of these devices. Measurements using pressure-sensitive paint also showed a spanwise sinusoidal pattern of wall pressure variation indicating generation of streamwise vortices from these control devices. These vortices, on interaction with the reverse flow in the separation bubble, replaced a well-defined separation line (for no control) by a highly corrugated separation line. In the region of separation, the mean pressure distribution gets modified while the peak rms value in the intermittent region of separation showed significant changes. Additionally, the spanwise spacing ‘s’ of the vertex of the delta ramps seemed to be an important parameter in controlling the peak rms value. A decrease in this spacing, i.e., VG1 with s =? 0, significantly reduced the peak rms value (by 50 and 35 %) while an increase in the spacing, i.e., VG2 with s =? 1?mm, consistently showed an increase (by 12 and 30 %) in the separation shock unsteadiness relative to no control, irrespective of their placement location (of h/δ?=?0.65 and 0.26, respectively).  相似文献

Gradient theories, as a regularized continuum mechanics approach, have found wide applications for modeling strain localization failure process. This paper presents a second gradient stress–strain damage elasticity theory based upon the method of virtual power. The theory considers the strain gradient and its conjugated double stresses. Instead of introducing an intrinsic material length scale into the constitutive law in an ad hoc fashion, a microstructural granular mechanics approach is applied to derive the higher-order constitutive coefficients such that the internal length scale parameter reflects the natural granularity of the underlying material microstructure. The derivations of the required damage constitutive relationships, the strong form governing equations as well as its weak form for the second gradient model are described. The recently popularized Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method is then employed to discretize the weak form equilibrium equation for accommodating the resultant higher-order continuity requirements and further handling the mesh sensitivity problem. Numerical examples for shear band simulations show that the proposed second gradient continuum model can produce stable, accurate as well as mesh-size independent solutions without a priori assumption of the shear band path.  相似文献

In this Letter we report the effect of two different cathode structures - tubular and squirrel cage, on neutron output from a miniature plasma focus device. The squirrel cage cathode is typical of most DPF sources, with an outer, tubular envelope that serves as a vacuum housing, but does not carry current. The tubular cathode carries the return current and also serves as the vacuum envelope, thereby minimizing the size of the DPF head. The maximum average neutron yield of (1.82±0.52)×105 n/shot for the tubular cathode at 4 mbar was enhanced to (1.15±0.2)×106 n/shot with squirrel cage cathode at 6 mbar operation. These results are explained on the basis of a current sheath loading/mass choking effect. The penalty for using a non-transparent cathode negates the advantage of the smaller size of the DPF head.  相似文献

Composite electrolytes in the system [(KCl)0.9:(NaCl)0.1]1−y:(ZrO2)y were prepared and their ionic conductivities were studied. In our previous study on the mixed halide system (KCl)1−x:(NaCl)x, maximum conductivity (∼50 times that of the base KCl matrix) was found when x=0.1. The matrix (KCl)0.9:(NaCl)0.1 was dispersed with different concentration of ZrO2 (powder) for the preparation of composites and their conductivities were determined. The maximum conductivity was developed for the composite having composition y=0.5. The matrices were prepared by melt-quench technique and the dispersion of ZrO2 was carried out in liquid medium. The conductivity measurements of the composites were carried out by impedance spectroscopy technique. The composite [(KCl)0.9:(NaCl)0.1]0.5:(ZrO2)0.5 was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The conductivity of the composite [(KCl)0.9:(NaCl)0.1]0.5:(ZrO2)0.5 as a function of temperature was also studied. The conductivity increase in the composite could be attributed to enhancement of defect concentration in the space charge region created at the interface between the host halide and the dispersoid.  相似文献

We demonstrate a multiple wavelength laser, employing wavelength dependent cavity losses, with up to four lasing wavelengths on the ITU-grid in the C-band and report on its stability characteristics. The linewidth of each wavelength was estimated to be less than 4 pm and we observed antiphase oscillations around 3 kHz and relaxation oscillations around 25 kHz. The antiphase oscillations in the multiwavelength laser lie on a limit cycle in a relative phase diagram. We present an analytic lumped model to determine the output power and relaxation oscillation frequency of the multiple lasing wavelengths in the Erbium doped fiber. The model is validated against our implementation of a multiwavelength ring laser.  相似文献

Viscosities of binary mixtures of pyridinium based ionic liquids (1-butyl pyridinium tetrafluoroborate, [BP][BF4], 1-butyl 3-methyl pyridinium tetrafluoroborate [3-MBP][BF4], 1-butyl 4-methyl pyridinium tetrafluoroborate, [4-MBP][BF4]), and phosphonium based ionic liquids, (tetrabutyl phosphonium alaninate, [TBP][Ala]; tetrabutyl phosphonium valinate, [TBP][Val]) with the molecular solvents, water, methanol and dichloromethane, have been measured at 298.15 K. A Brookfield ultra-rheometer was employed to measure the reported viscosities. The drop in viscosity in the close vicinity of pure ionic liquid is more prominent in polar solvents like water compared to less polar solvents. The temperature dependence of this observation was also studied for binary mixtures of [4-MBP][BF4] with water in range of 298.15–323.15 K. The Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman (VFT) equation was employed to investigate the temperature dependence of the viscosities of pure pyridinium-based ionic liquids in the temperature range from 298.15–323.15 K.  相似文献
