On some nonlinear problems in mathematical physics with exponents close to critical ones

The paper deals with several problems having the following common feature. The differential equation under consideration contains a power function of the solution or of its gradient, with the exponent depending on a small parameter. This dependence is such that a certain property of the solutions corresponding to the positive values of the parameter may disappear as the latter tends to zero. This phenomenon is shown to be lacking in the case where not only the said exponent, but also the coefficients of the equation depend on the small parameter in a suitable way. Several theorems are proved on sharp conditions, ensuring such uniformity of various properties exhibited by the solutions. Bibliography: 44 titles. Neutron activation analysis of iodine in soil

A simple pre-irradiation procedure for the separation of iodine from soil has been developed. A soil sample was heated in a quartz tube for 15 min at about 900 °C. The evaporated iodine was collected in activated charcoal, which was produced from phenol resin with low impurities. The charcoal, with sorbed iodine, was irradiated by neutrons and the¹²⁸I produced was measured. A successful elimination of the background radioactivity due to the matrix elements was possible with this separation procedure. The detection limit by this method for soil samples was about 0.1 mg/kg (dry). The method has been applied to analyze selected soil samples.     

Reaction of D2 with palladium fulleride C60Pd4.9

Fullerene deuteride was obtained by the reaction of deuterium with solid palladium fulleride C₆₀Pd_4.9 under fairly mild conditions. Kinetics of zinc(II) cloride extraction with tributyl phosphate

The equilibrium and rate of solvent extraction of zinc chloride complexes from HCl solutions into benzene solutions of tributyl phosphate (TBP) have been studied. The extracted species are discussed in the light of the results. The extraction was found to be first order with respect to both Zn(II) and TBP, and zero order for HCl. The rate-controlling steps are discussed and the rate constants for these reactions are calculated.     

Noncoercive Boundary Value Problems for Elliptic Partial Differential and Differential-Operator Equations

In this paper we find conditions guarantee that irregular boundary value problems for elliptic differential-operator equations of the second order in an interval are fredholm. We apply this result to find some algebraic conditions guarantee that irregular boundary value problems for elliptic partial differential equations of the second order in cylindrical domains are fredholm. Apparently this is the first paper where the regularity of an elliptic boundary value problem is not satisfied on a manifold of the dimension equal to dimension of the boundary. Nevertheless the problem is fredholm and the resolvent is compact. It is interesting to note that the considered boundary value problems for elliptic equations in a cylinder being with separating variables are noncoercive.     

Geometric quantization of topological gauge theories

We show that Abelian gauge theories in 2+1 space-time dimensions with the introduction of a topological Chern-Simons term can be quantized with the use of the symplectic formalism. The consistency of our results are verified by the agreement with the ones from the Dirac case.     

Optimal algebraic multilevel preconditioning for local refinement along a line

The application of some recently proposed algebraic multilevel methods for the solution of two-dimensional finite element problems on nonuniform meshes is studied. The locally refined meshes are created by the newest vertex mesh refinement method. After the introduction of this refinement technique it is shown that, by combining levels of refinement, a preconditioner of optimal order can be constructed for the case of local refinement along a line. Its relative condition number is accurately estimated. Numerical tests demonstrating the performance of the proposed preconditioners will be reported in a forthcoming paper.
