A complete classification is given of curves in the plane which contract homothetically when evolved according to a power of their curvature. Applications are given to the limiting behaviour of the flows in various situations.

Average g-factors for high-spin states in 78Kr

Inverse reactions of ^{63, 65}Cu beams on ^{18, 16}O targets have been used to populate states of ⁷⁸Kr by fusion-evaporation reactions. The excited nuclei recoiled at high velocity v/c ≈ 7 % through a polarized iron (⁵⁴Fe) layer and were stopped in a copper layer. During the period in iron, 0.05–0.65 ps, the nuclei were subjected to the intense transient magnetic field (initially ～ 3500 T). The resulting precession of the high-spin nuclear states populated during this time was determined by measuring the time integral rotation angle of the discrete γ-ray transitions at low spin.The average g-factor at low spin 2 ≦ J ≦ 8 compared to that at higher spin 8 ≦ J ≦ 12 in ⁷⁸Kr was found to be identical within the experimental uncertainties of ～ 15 %. This result implies that either there are no rotational alignment effects at the backbend in ⁷⁸Kr or more plausibly, proton (g ≈ 1) and neutron (g ≈ 0) aligned bands are equally competitive and both populated in the reaction. It is then likely that the resulting g-factor represents an average over many populated proton and neutron aligned bands.

Magnetic circular dichroism of matrix isolated noble gas monohalides

MCD measurements on XeF, XeCl, XeBr and XeI matrix isolated in Ar at low temperature are reported. Some relationships among the various spectroscopic parameters are established by combining these data existing absorption and ESR measurements.     

Impurity Auger spectra: A probe of the local impurity density of state and the impurity electron—electron interactions

We show that the local impurity density of states and the impurity electron—electron interactions can be obtained from impurity Auger spectra. For a Ag_0.95Pd_0.05 alloy we find 11% Pd(d) character in the Ag d band and Pd(4d-4d) Coulomb interactions which are much larger than the virtual bound state widths.     

Identities in combinatorics,I: on sorting two ordered sets

A binomial coefficient identity equivalent to Saalschutz's summation of a ₃F₂ hypergeometric series is proved combinatorially. The proof depends on the enumeration of ordered pairs (A,B) of subsets of{1,2,3,…,ν} in which |A|=n, |B|=m, and B contains exactly r elements of the first n elements of A∪B.
