Methylmethacrylate complexes of sterically hindered aluminum aryloxides: activation of methacrylic esters

The interaction of AlR₂(BHT)(OEt₂) and AlMe(BHT)₂ with methylmethacrylate (MMA) leads to the formation of the Lewis acid-base complexes AlR₂(BHT)(MMA) [R = Me (1), Et (2)] and AlMe-(BHT)₂(MMA) (3), respectively. The molecular structure of 1 has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The decrease in the C=O and C=C stretching frequencies in the IR spectrum, and downfield shift in the ¹³C NMR spectrum of the - and γ-carbons of the MMA, when compared to free MMA, is presented with respect to the activator ability of sterically crowded aryloxide compounds of aluminum to aluminum-porphyrin catalyzed (Inoue) polymerization of MMA.     

Kinetic studies of laser-induced synthesis of thin vanadium pentoxide films

The kinetics of Ar⁺ laser-induced oxidation of 100 nm thick vanadium films on glass substrates is followed by measuring time-dependent changes in reflected and transmitted intensity of a He-Ne probe beam. The growth rate of the vanadium pentoxide layer increases with increasing laser powerP as = ₀ exp(-a/P). At power densities above kW/cm² vanadium pentoxide crystallizes from the melt.     

Three-photon near-threshold photoionization dynamics of isooctane

The electron survival probability following three-photon (9.3 eV total) near-threshold photoionization of neat isooctane is measured with sub-50 fs time resolution. The measured dynamics are nonexponential in time and are well described by a diffusion-controlled electron-cation recombination model. Excitation-power-dependent studies indicate that the unperturbed three-photon threshold ionization is only observed for pump irradiance below 0.5 TW cm2. At excitation fields above this level, the signal is no longer cubic in the excitation irradiance, and the observed electron survival probability dramatically changes, decaying as a single exponential in time.     

Topotactic oxidation of TiGaPO-1, a pyridine-templated titanium gallophosphate with a new octahedral-tetrahedral 3-D framework structure containing Ti(III)/Ti(IV)

The first 3-D open-framework TiGaPO complex, constructed from Ti(III)O(6), Ti(IV)O(6), GaO(4), and PO(4) polyhedra, contains pyridinium cations in a 1-D pore network and can be oxidized in air at 543 K with retention of the original framework structure.     

Stamp collapse in soft lithography

We have studied the so-called roof collapse in soft lithography. Roof collapse is due to the adhesion between the PDMS stamp and substrate, and it may affect the quality of soft lithography. Our analysis accounts for the interactions of multiple punches and the effect of elastic mismatch between the PDMS stamp and substrate. A scaling law among the stamp modulus, punch height and spacing, and work of adhesion between the stamp and substrate is established. Such a scaling law leads to a simple criterion against the unwanted roof collapse. The present study agrees well with the experimental data.     

Rational materials design of sorbent coatings for explosives: applications with chemical sensors

A series of chemoselective polymers had been designed and synthesized to enhance the sorption properties of polymer coated chemical sensors for polynitroaromatic analytes. To evaluate the effectiveness of the chemoselective coatings, a polynitroaromatic vapor test bed was utilized to challenge polymer coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices with different explosive vapors. Dinitrotoluene detection limits were determined to be in the <100 parts per trillion ranges. ATR-FTIR studies were used to determine the nature of the polymer-polynitroaromatic analyte interactions, and confirm the presence of hydrogen-bonding between polymer pendant groups and the nitro functional groups of polynitroaromatic explosive materials.     

Reaction titration: a convenient method for titering reactive hydride agents (Red-Al, LiAlH4, DIBALH, L-Selectride, NaH, and KH) by No-D NMR spectroscopy

The concentration of reactive metal hydride (Met-H) reducing agents can be determined (in < or = 20 min) using No-D NMR spectroscopy. The method involves (i) reacting Met-H with an excess of p-methoxybenzaldehyde, (ii) quenching with excess acetic acid, (iii) recording the No-D NMR spectrum of this homogeneous mixture, and (iv) deducing the concentration of Met-H from the % conversion (as measured by integration). By a conceptually related method, the titer of the basic alkali metal hydrides KH and NaH can also be determined.     

The stereoselective synthesis of aziridine analogues of diaminopimelic acid (DAP) and their interaction with dap epimerase

Aziridine analogues of diaminopimelic acid (DAP) have been prepared stereoselectively for the first time and evaluated as inhibitors of DAP epimerase. (2R,3S,3'S)-3-(3'-Aminopropane)aziridine-2,3'-dicarboxylate was synthesised and shown to be a reversible inhibitor of DAP epimerase with an IC(50) value of 2.88 mM. (2S,4S)- and (2S,4R)-2-(4-Amino-4-carboxybutyl)aziridine-2-carboxylic acid (ll-azi-DAP and dl-azi-DAP ) were made as pure diastereomers, and both were shown to be irreversible inhibitors of DAP epimerase. ll-Azi-DAP selectively binds to Cys-73 of the enzyme active site whereas dl-azi-DAP binds to Cys-217 via attack of sulfhydryl on the methylene of the inhibitor aziridine ring. These observations are consistent with the two base mechanism proposed for the epimerization of ll-DAP and meso-DAP by DAP epimerase.
