The interaction of cationic polymers with human hair

We present a combination of electrochemical methods, i.e. polyelectrolyte titration and streaming potential measurement, and AFM to characterise the adsorption and desorption behaviour and the morphology of a set of polyquaternium polymers on human hair. Specific charge density and molar mass are correlated to the amount of adsorbed polymer and the ease of desorption. Results are in line with a simple model of coulombic interaction between hair and polymer and are interpreted on this basis.     

Localized Visualization of Chemical Cross-Talk in Microsensor Arrays by Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

 An investigation of an array of four Pt microband electrodes 25 μm wide and spaced 25 μm apart was performed with the scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM). Where possible the SECM measurements were confirmed with conventional electrochemical measurements. It is shown how the sensiti- vity of the SECM recycling current to the activity of the underlying surface can be used to probe the homogeneity of enzyme-modified microelectrodes. The diffusion of H₂O₂ between these micro enzyme- electrodes and unmodified electrodes was investigated and it was demonstrated how the SECM can be a powerful tool in the elucidation of the properties of these electrodes. Design of a combined ozone/electron beam process for waste water and economic feasibility of the process

A design of a combined ozone/electron beam irradiation process for treating a 50 m³/h waste water stream from a molasses processing is discussed. Moreover, a cost evaluation of such a process in comparison to a conventional ozonation/biology treatment process has been performed to assess the potential of the irradiation process for technical use. Although the result of this comparison is not bad for the irradiation process an implementation into a full scale plant would not seem to be the thing to do in the present case.     

Ternäre Halogenide vom Typ A3MX6. IV. [1]. Ternäre Halogenide des Scandiums mit Natrium,Na3ScX6 (X = F,Cl, Br): Synthese,Strukturen, Ionenleitfähigkeit

Ternary Halides of the A₃MX₆ Type. IV. Ternary Halides of Scandium with Sodium, Na₃ScX₆ (X = F, Cl, Br): Synthesis, Structures, Ionic Conductivity X-ray studies on single crystals of Na₃ScF₆ and Na₃ScBr₆ show, that Na₃ScF₆ crystallizes with the cryolite type (monoclinic, P2₁/n, Z = 2, a = 560.16(9), b = 580.31(8), c = 812.1(2)pm, β = 90.720(14)°) and Na₃ScBr₆, as the only ternary bromide of the rare earth elements with sodium, in the Na₃CrCl₆ type (trigonal, P3 1c, Z = 2, a = 728.95(7), c = 1309.29(17)pm). The ionic conductivity of powder samples of Na₃ScF₆, Na₃ScBr₆ and of Na₃ScCl₆ was studied by impedance spectroscopy. Activation energies were determined as 1.22 eV, 0.80 eV and 0.71 eV for the fluoride, chloride and bromide, respectively. The differences are explained from the crystal structures and the sizes and polarizabilities of the anions.     

Influence of the mesophase structure on the β-relaxation in liquid crystalline poly(meth)acrylates

The dependence of the rotation of the mesogenic unit around its long axis (β-relaxation) on the actual mesophase in liqid crystalline polymethacrylates and polyacrylates was studied by dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range from 10⁻² Hz to 10⁶ Hz and in a temperature range from 170 K to 430 K. As mesogenic units derivatives of (p-alkoxy-phenyl)-benzoate were used where different mesophases were achieved by small variation of the mesogenic structure, the spacer length and the tail group of the mesogenic unit. For all samples the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of the β-relaxation can be described by an Arrhenius equation where both the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy increase significantly with the order of the mesophase. To characterize the structure X-ray measurements were also carried out. The mean lateral mesogenic distance was correlated directly with relaxational quantities.
