In this article we present first proof-of-principle neutron depolarization imaging measurements on Ni foils under mechanical stress. The magnetostrictive effect in Ni leads to a reorientation of the magnetic domains in the material depending on the applied force. This in turn leads to a change of the depolarization a neutron beam suffers from transmission of the sample. We propose to use this method as a new technique for the spatially resolved measurement of mechanical stress. 相似文献

The influence of fundamental and second harmonic wavelength on ablation efficiency and nanoparticle properties is studied
during picosecond laser ablation of silver, zinc, and magnesium in polymer-doped tetrahydrofuran. Laser ablation in stationary
liquid involves simultaneously the fabrication of nanoparticles by ablation of the target material and fragmentation of dispersed
nanoparticles by post irradiation. The ratio in which the laser pulse energy contributes to these processes depends on laser
wavelength and colloidal properties. For plasmon absorbers (silver), using the second harmonic wavelength leads to a decrease
of the nanoparticle productivity over process time along with exponential decrease in particle diameter, while using the fundamental
wavelength results in a constant ablation rate and linear decrease in particle diameter. For colloids made of materials without
plasmon absorption (zinc, magnesium), laser scattering is the colloidal property that limits nanoparticle productivity by

Despite the enormous interest in the properties of graphene and the potential of graphene nanostructures in electronic applications, the study of quantum-confined states in atomically well-defined graphene nanostructures remains an experimental challenge. Here, we study graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with well-defined edges in the zigzag direction, grown by chemical vapor deposition on an Ir(111) substrate by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We measure the atomic structure and local density of states of individual GQDs as a function of their size and shape in the range from a couple of nanometers up to ca. 20 nm. The results can be quantitatively modeled by a relativistic wave equation and atomistic tight-binding calculations. The observed states are analogous to the solutions of the textbook "particle-in-a-box" problem applied to relativistic massless fermions. 相似文献

We report on single-pass high-harmonic generation (HHG) with amplified driving laser pulses at a repetition rate of 20.8?MHz. An Yb:YAG Innoslab amplifier system provides 35?fs pulses with 20?W average power at 1030?nm after external pulse compression. Following tight focusing into a xenon gas jet, we observe the generation of high-harmonic radiation of up to the seventeenth order. Our results show that state-of-the-art amplifier systems have become a promising alternative to cavity-assisted HHG for applications that require high repetition rates, such as frequency comb spectroscopy in the extreme UV. 相似文献

Computer-generated holograms displayed by phase-modulating spatial light modulators have become a well-established tool for beam shaping purposes in holographic optical tweezers. Still, the generation of light intensity patterns with high spatial symmetry and simultaneously without interfering ghost traps is a challenge. We have implemented an iterative Fourier transform algorithm that is capable of controlling these ghost traps and demonstrate the benefit of this approach in the experiment. 相似文献

We investigate the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on silver tubes with finite-difference time-domain simulations. These surface plasmon polaritons exhibit azimuthal whispering gallery modes with quality factors in the hundreds. We show that the high quality factors arise from the coupling of the surface plasmon modes to photonic modes inside the tube. We examine the influence of a gain material on the quality factors and find that for material data of rhodamine 6G, the quality factors are enhanced significantly up to values of 3000. 相似文献

Ytterbium-doped large-pitch fibers with very large mode areas are investigated in a high-power fiber amplifier configuration. An average output power of 294?W is demonstrated, while maintaining robust single-mode operation with a mode field diameter of 62?μm. A high-speed mode analysis technique is required to gain fundamental understanding of mode instabilities in high-power fiber laser systems. In this work a technique, purely based on the intensity profile of the beam, is demonstrated to be ideally suited to analyze fiber laser dynamics. This technique, together with a high-speed camera, has been applied to the study of the temporal dynamics of mode instabilities at high average powers with up to 20,000 frames per second. These measurements confirm that energy transfer between the fluctuating transversal modes takes place in millisecond-time-scale. 相似文献

We introduce an approach to enhance the angular tolerance of resonant waveguide gratings by stacking two resonant structures on top of each other. It is shown that reflectivities close to unity can be retrieved over the entire angular spectrum by a double T-shaped grating configuration. Although a combination of silicon as the high-index and diamond as the low-index material is considered, the principles of our new approach can also be used to realize monolithic silicon structures with similar properties. We illustrate that the functionality of the device can be understood by a decomposition into separated elements. Our approach might have compelling applications as new diffractive-reflective optical components with low-coating thermal noise in the field of high-precision metrology. 相似文献

We propose a monolithic narrowband guided-mode grating filter in fused silica that is widely tunable in the near-IR wavelength region. Based on a recently demonstrated approach for a monolithic reflector comprising an encapsulated grating, we theoretically investigate such a device by means of rigorous modeling aimed at a narrow linewidth. It is demonstrated that upon a spatial variation of the filter's grating period its resonance wavelength can be tuned in a remarkably wide range of near-IR radiation with 800 nm<λ(res)< 1600 nm by translating the laser beam relative to the grating area. The filter performance in terms of linewidth and contrast is essentially preserved over the entire tuning interval. 相似文献
