A finiteness theorem for low-codimensional nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics

We prove that there are only finitely many families of codimension two nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics which are not of general type, for and . We prove a similar statement also for the case of higher codimension.

     

A 2D coordination polymer with canted ferromagnetism constructed from ferromagnetic [Ni(II)Co(II)] nodes

A bimetallic coordination polymer, infinity (2)[{LNi (II)Co (II)}(dca) 2], has been constructed from heterobinuclear [Ni (II)Co (II)] nodes and dicyanamido spacers [L (2-) is the dianion of the Schiff base resulting from the 2:1 condensation of 3-methoxysalicyladehyde with 1,3-propanediamine; L (2-) = N, N'-propylenebis(3-methoxysalycilideneiminato)]. The intranode Co (II)-Ni (II) interaction was found to be ferromagnetic because of the orthogonality of the magnetic orbitals. Below 12 K, the onset of the canted ferromagnetic ordering is observed.     

GaCl3-assisted cyclization reactions in hypersilyl(trimethylsilyl)aminodichlorophosphine

Hypersilyl(trimethylsilyl)aminodichlorophosphine, (hyp)N(SiMe3)PCl2, was treated with GaCl3, which resulted in the formation of an interesting novel bicycle, composed of a four-membered SiNP2 ring and a five-membered P2Ga2Cl ring. In the presence of Me3SiN3, the same reaction provided access to a cyclo-2-phospha-4-sila-1,3-diazenium tetrachlorogallate. The free chloro-cyclo-phosphasiladiazane was obtained by the addition of nucleophilic bases.     

Totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on networks

We study the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on complex networks, as a paradigmatic model for transport subject to excluded volume interactions. Building on TASEP phenomenology on a single segment and borrowing ideas from random networks we investigate the effect of connectivity on transport. In particular, we argue that the presence of disorder in the topology of vertices crucially modifies the transport features of a network: irregular networks involve homogeneous segments and have a bimodal distribution of edge densities, whereas regular networks are dominated by shocks leading to a unimodal density distribution. The proposed numerical approach of solving for mean-field transport on networks provides a general framework for studying TASEP on large networks, and is expected to generalize to other transport processes.     

Low frequency deep ocean ambient noise trend in the Northeast Pacific Ocean

Concern about effects of anthropogenic noise on marine life has stimulated new studies to establish present-day ocean noise levels and compare them to noise levels from previous times. This paper reports on the trend in low-frequency (10-400 Hz) ambient noise levels and presents measurements made using a calibrated multi-element volume array at deep ocean sites in the Northeast Pacific from 1978 to 1986. The experiments provided spectral noise levels as well as horizontal and vertical noise directionality. The data presented here provide evidence that the trend derived from 1960s data extended to around 1980, but has since continued at a lower rate.     

Cancellation of acoustic scattering from an elastic sphere

Recent research has suggested the possibility of creating acoustic cloaks using metamaterial layers to eliminate the acoustic field scattered from an elastic object. This paper explores the possibility of applying the scattering cancellation cloaking technique to acoustic waves and the use of this method to investigate its effectiveness in cloaking elastic and fluid spheres using only a single isotropic elastic layer. Parametric studies showing the influence of cloak stiffness and geometry on the frequency dependent scattering cross-section of spheres have been developed to explore the design space of the cloaking layer. This analysis shows that an appropriately designed single isotropic elastic cloaking layer can provide up to 30 dB of scattering reduction for ka values up to 1.6. This work also illustrates the importance of accounting for the elasticity of the object and the relevant limitations of simplistic quasi-static analyses proposed in recent papers.     

Spin-orbit relativistic time-dependent density functional calculations of the metal and ligand pre-edge XAS intensities of organotitanium complexes: TiCl4, Ti(eta5-C5H5)Cl3, and Ti(eta5-C5H5)2Cl2

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) coupled to the relativistic two-component zeroth-order regular approximation, both available in the last version of the ADF package, have been successfully used to simulate X-ray absorption spectra of TiCl4, Ti(eta5-C5H5)Cl3, and Ti(eta5-C5H5)2Cl2 in terms of their oscillator strength distributions. Besides allowing a first principle assignment of Ti 1s, Cl 1s, and Ti 2p (L2,3 edges) core excitation spectra, theoretical outcomes provide a rationale for deviations from the expected L3/L2 branching ratio.     

Microwave-assisted synthesis of tricarbonyl rhenacarboranes: steric and electronic effects on the 1,2 --> 1,7 carborane cage isomerization

A series of tricarbonyl rhenacarboranes {[M][Re(CO)3(RR'C2B9H9)]} (M = Na, K) were synthesized in water using microwave radiation with reaction times of less than 15 min. The novel complexes were isolated in good yields (57-94%) as either 3,1,2-(R = H: R' = CH2Pyr 6; R' = CH2Cy, 20) or 2,1,8-(R = H: R' = H, 4; R' = CH2PyrMe 12; R' = CH2PyrH, 13; R' = Pyr, 15; R' = Ph, 17; R = R' = Bn, 19) metallacarboranes and characterized by multinuclear (1H, 11B, 13C) and NOE NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography in the case of compounds 12 and 13. Carborane cage isomerization from the original 1,2 configuration to the 1,7 orientation occurred in cases where significant steric crowding was present at the metal center. Incorporation of a methylene spacer between the carborane cage and the six-membered ring as in 7 and 20 decreased steric strain such that the 3,1,2 configuration was maintained. Conversion of the 3,1,2 complex 6 to the 2,1,8 isomers 12 and 13 takes place at room temperature upon methylation or protonation of the pyridyl ring, indicating that electronic effects also play a significant role in the isomerization process.     

Nearest-neighbor oxygen distances in liquid water and ice observed by x-ray Raman based extended x-ray absorption fine structure

We report the nearest-neighbor oxygen-oxygen radial distribution function (NN O-O RDF) of room temperature liquid water and polycrystalline ice Ih (-16.8 degrees C) obtained by x-ray Raman based extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The spectra of the two systems were taken under identical experimental conditions using the same procedures to obtain the NN O-O RDFs. This protocol ensured a measurement of the relative distance distribution with very small systematic errors. The NN O-O RDF of water is found to be more asymmetric (tail extending to longer distances) with longer average distance (2.81 A for water and 2.76 A for ice) but a slightly shorter peak position (2.70 A for water and 2.71 A for ice). The refinement also showed a small but significant contribution from the linear O-H-O multiple scattering signal. The high sensitivity to short range distances of the EXAFS probe will set further restrictions to the range of possible models of liquid water.

Template‐controlled self‐assembly of discrete molecular pentaphosphaferrocene and CuCl units was used to form the first entirely carbon‐free molecule that has C₈₀ topology and encapsulates a carborane unit. In their Communication on page 5046 ff. , M. Scheer and co‐workers report the synthesis and characterization of this impressive supramolecular compound, which displays an electronic interaction between the carborane and the spherical host molecule.
