Direct observation of defect levels in InN by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have used synchrotron-based near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy to study the electronic structure of nitrogen-related defects in InN(0001). Several defect levels within the band gap or the conduction band of InN were clearly resolved in NEXAFS spectra around the nitrogen K-edge. We attribute the level observed at 0.3 eV below the conduction band minimum (CBM) to interstitial nitrogen, the level at 1.7 eV above the CBM to antisite nitrogen, and a sharp resonance at 3.2 eV above the CBM to molecular nitrogen, in full agreement with theoretical simulations.

The angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from benzene using 21.22 eV radiation has been measured and the results applied to the analysis of the ionization bands.

Cartesian Dynamics of Simple Molecules VIII planar quadratomics (D3h symmetry)

The vibrations of planar A₃B type molecules with D_3h symmetry are analysed, by treating these molecules as a special case of A₂BC types with C_2v symmetry. Analytical expressions for the four normal mode frequencies are derived in terms of four force constants, and optimized values of the latter for the boron trihalides and sulphur trioxide are obtained and briefly discussed. Frequencies of various isotopic species are also calculated.     

Price competition with integrated and decentralized supply chains

We consider price competition with a linear demand function and compare two cases. In the first case each distribution channel is vertically integrated, while in the second, decentralised, case the manufacturers and retailers act independently. We explore the effect of varying the level of price competition on the profits of the industry participants and demonstrate the important role played by the spread of underlying market shares. The coefficient of variation of these market shares determines whether decentralised supply chains can outperform integrated supply chains with an appropriate level of competition.     

Low-temperature thermal conductivity of an amorphous palladium silicon alloy

The thermal conductivity of a glassy PdSi alloy has been measured in the temperature range 0.1–30 K. The thermal conductivity contributed by the phonons has the same anomalous behavior as found for all non-metallic amorphous materials. Heat treatment increases the phonon thermal conductance by ～50%, a change which does not appear to be related to partial crystallization.
