Synthesis and mesomorphic behavior of symmetrical chiral liquid crystal dimers incorporating ester linked biphenyl- naphthyl cores and terminal vinyl group

A series of symmetrical chiral, liquid crystal dimeric molecules possessing ester- linked, biphenyl-naphthyl cores with varied spacer lengths and terminal vinyl groups have been synthesized using Naproxen as the synthetic precursor. The synthesized symmetrical chiral dimers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and their liquid crystalline behavior was confirmed by DSC and HOPM studies. Structural effects on the mesomorphic and physicochemical properties were investigated in terms of variation of chiral chain length. The synthesized dimeric compounds exhibited SmX^*, SmC^*, SmA^*, N^*, BPI^*, and BPII^* mesophase sequences. An odd-even effect was observed in the dimers and the duration of the mesophase decreased with increasing spacer length. The synthesized vinyl substituted liquid crystalline dimers are particularly useful in understanding liquid crystal polymorphism and act as model compounds for liquid crystal polymers.     

Conduction Studies on Bismuth Selenide Thin Films

Thin films of Bi₂Se₃ have been prepared by vacuum deposition technique onto well cleaned glass and freshly cleaved KBr substrates. The film thicknesses are measured by Tolansky technique. The capacitance and dielectric constant have been measured from 303 K to 383 K in the frequency range of 10 kHz to 10 MHz. The a.c. conductivity s is calculated at different frequencies for various temperatures. The relation s μ wn fits well and the value of n is found to be greater than 1.5 and above at high frequencies suggests that the conduction mechanism in Bi₂Se₃ thin film is hopping. The d.c. conduction studies revealed the non-ohmic type of conduction( Log I versus Log V plot). From the Log I versus F1/2 plot, the field lowering coefficient b is evaluated.

A one-pot Amberlite IRA-400 Cl resin catalyzed the in-situ generation of imines from various aldehydes and primary amines followed by reduction with sodium borohydride affording corresponding secondary amines. The secondary amines thus obtained were utilized for the IRA-400 Cl resin catalyzed multicomponent synthesis of 3-aminoalkylated indoles using a number of aldehydes and indole. Mild condition, easy work-up, and environmentally benign nature of the synthetic strategy make it both practical and attractive.
