UV resonance Raman spectroscopic study of six short proline‐containing peptides with antioxidant activity isolated from human breast milk was performed. The amide II′ proline spectroscopic band was used to estimate relative cis trans isomerization state of proline amide bonds in the different peptides. Antioxidant activity of the peptides was determined using 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picryl‐hydrazyl (DPPH) assay and linoleic acid emulsion assay. Although no clear correlation between the amide II′p position and antioxidant activity of the peptides was observed, they both were found to be sensitive to the presence and/or relative position of proline and tyrosine residues in the peptide. Classical studies concerning “Acetobacter xylinum” focus on bacterial cellulose “BC” yield and rate in broth, after a long period of incubation (7–14 days). Such observations do not highlight bacterial physiology in the first incubation hours and its impact on BC production. In this study, the growth of a wild strain of Acetobacter was monitored in the first incubation hours. We showed the presence of two different physiologies; the first extends from the incubation moment till the formation of a sparse BC. Sparse BC modifies surface viscosity, and stabilizes hydrodynamic conditions to initiate compact BC production that marks the second physiology. Two containers, of different shapes, were used to confirm our findings, one of which is a culture tube with high drift currents on the broth-air interface, and the other is a conical flask with more stable hydrodynamic conditions at the culture’s surface. We showed that Acetobacter always follows two physiologies independent of the container shape. Logistic model, FTIR, XRD and SEM analysis are used to confirm the results.  相似文献

The use of maximum likelihood methods in analysing times to failure in the presence of unobserved randomly changing covariates requires constrained optimization procedures. An alternative approach using a generalized version of the EM-algorithm requires smoothed estimates of covariate values. Similar estimates are needed in evaluating past exposures to hazardous chemicals, radiation or other toxic materials when health effects only become evident long after their use. In this paper, two kinds of equation for smoothing estimates of unobserved covariates in survival problems are derived. The first shows how new information may be used to update past estimates of the covariates' values. The second can be used to project the covariates' trajectory from the present to the past. If the hazard function is quadratic in form, both types of smoothing equation can be derived in a closed analytical form. Examples of both types of equation are presented. Use of these equations in the extended EM-algorithm, and in estimating past exposures to hazardous materials, are discussed. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Reversible electrostatically induced wetting (electrowetting) of vertically aligned superhydrophobic carbon nanofibers has been investigated. Carbon nanofibers on a 5 x 5 microm pitch were grown on Si substrates, electrically insulated with a conformal dielectric, and hydrophobized with fluoropolymer. This nanostructured scaffold exhibited superhydrophobic behavior for saline (theta approximately 160 degrees). Electrowetting induced a contact angle reduction to theta approximately 100 degrees. Competitive two-liquid (dodecane/saline) electrowetting exhibited reversibility on the same nanostructured scaffold. Without applied bias, ultra-fine-point tip (approximately 25 nm radius) nanofibers result in effectively zero capacitance with the overlying saline layer. Complete electrowetting of the substrate is confirmed as capacitance values increase by several orders of magnitude with increased wetting. These results demonstrate the applicability of reversible electrowetting on nanostructured scaffolds and use of nanofabricated structures that can be integrated with various micro- and nanoelectronic technologies.  相似文献

We present calculations of the temperature dependence of the solvent reorganization energy of 4-amino-phthalimide chromophore in quadrupolar toluene. The reorganization energy is a sum of the contributions from quadrupolar and induction solvation. We employ several calculation formalisms in order to evaluate their performance against the experiment. The point-dipole and full atomic distributions of solute charge are compared to show that the point-dipole approximation works well for this chromophore. We also show that most of the reorganization entropy comes from the quadrupolar response. Induction solvation amounts to about 10% of the entropy. Both the reorganization energy and the reorganization entropy are greatly affected by the local solute-solvent density profile (density reorganization) which contributes about half of their values. The induction reorganization energy is strongly affected by the microscopic, nonlocal nature of the density fluctuations of the solvent around the solute.  相似文献

Strategies for assembling silver nanocubes (NCs) into distinct 2D patterns on Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films are demonstrated using two different lipid mixtures as vehicles: (1) raft mixtures containing 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), sphingomyelin (SPM), and cholesterol in different mole ratios (2:2:1 and 1:1:1) and (2) 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DLPC) at a 1:3 mol ratio. Atomic force microscopy was employed to unveil the mechanisms of such pattern formation in the LB film. The results demonstrate that aggregation of NCs into round-like pattern is governed by preferential localization of NCs within the liquid condensed (LC) domains of DOPC/SPM/Cholesterol mixture. Cholesterol was found to govern the size and shape of the rounded islands. On the other hand, incorporation of NCs within the liquid expanded (LE) phase of DPPC/DLPC mixture produced linear-branched chains, oriented normal to the Langmuir film transfer direction. The as engineered patterns of silver NCs exhibited characteristic plasmonic signatures. Our results reveal the potential in assembling plasmonic metal nanoparticles into diverse patterns on solid substrates by exploiting their preferential localization either in LC or LE phase of appropriate lipid mixture in Langmuir film.  相似文献

We consider the problem of nonparametric identification for a multi-dimensional functional autoregression y t = f(y t −1, …,y t−d ) + e t on the basis of N observations of y t . In the case when the unknown nonlinear function f belongs to the Barron class, we propose an estimation algorithm which provides approximations of f with expected L 2 accuracy O(N 1/4ln1/4 N). We also show that this approximation rate cannot be significantly improved. The proposed algorithms are “computationally efficient”– the total number of elementary computations necessary to complete the estimate grows polynomially with N. We calculate P-odd difference of the total cross sections of the deuteron disintegration by left and right polarized photons. The relative magnitude of this difference in the threshold region is about 10−7. Its experimental measurement would give valuable information on the weak nucleon–nucleon interaction at short distances.  相似文献

The effect of pulse amplitude on the ferroelectric and switching properties of pulsed laser deposited Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films has been studied. The structural and morphological analysis revealed that the films had a well crystallized perovskite phase and grain size of about 30–40 nm. A well saturated P–E hysteresis loop was observed with a remnant polarization (Pr)  4.8 μC/cm2 and a coercive field  100 kV/cm at a frequency of 1 kHz. The Pr has been found to be decreased only 4.3% after passing 8.0 × 108 cycles. The analysis of switching response with nucleation limited switching model reveals that characteristic switching time (t0) variance is due to the random distribution of the local electric fields. The peak value of polarization current and t0 exhibits exponential dependence on reciprocal of pulse amplitude.  相似文献
