Plasmon effects in electron energy loss and gain spectra in aluminium

Oberservations of the low energy secondary and Auger electron spectra and the electron energy loss spectra from a clean aluminium surface have been made and the results are compared with other recent studies including that of Jenkins and Chung (1971). Low energy emissions at 5.7 eV and 10.3 eV are associated with the creation of single electron excitations in the valence band by plasmon decay. An apparent anomaly in the plasmon loss and gain peaks associated with the Auger spectrum is discussed.     

Second-order perturbation correction to the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum

Two substantially different perturbation methods are used to obtain two equivalent exact results for the leading correction to the Bogoliubov formula for the energy spectrum of an elementary excitation in a boson fluid.     

Electron self-energy in a magnetic field

In the lowest order in the fine-structure constant, the electron self-energy in an external magnetic field can be written in the form of a double integral representation containing the exact information about the radiative shift and width of the energy levels, without approximation in the field strength. In the low-field expansion of the radiative shift, the leading term is conveniently interpreted in terms of the electron's anomalous magnetic moment, whilst in very strong fields the enhancement of the cyclotron motion makes the shift a positive, slowly increasing function of the field intensity. It follows that, even in superstrong magnetic fields, the electromagnetic interaction cannot give rise to an instability of the electron-positron vacuum.     

Eddy-current loss in a rotating magnetic field

The eddy-current loss is calculated for nonferromagnetic disks in a rotating magnetic field. The power loss is found as a function of the magnetic field intensity, the field rotation velocity, and the disk dimensions. The eddy-current loss was measured experimentally in rotating fields in copper, aluminum, and zinc disks; a good agreement was found with the calculated values.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 38–42, January, 1971.     

Bonding in uranium oxides: The role of 5f electrons

X-ray photoemission spectra of valence and bonding bands of UO₂, U₃O₈ and UO₃ are presented. The gradual transfer of localized 5f electrons into the bonding band as a function of oxygen content has been studied in these oxides.     

On the dispersion of the dielectric constant of an inhomogeneous dielectric

The influence of an inhomogeneity, smoothly distributed through the thickness of a sample, on the dielectric properties of the sample is discussed. An estimate is made of the degree of inhomogeneity in a dielectric film on a base of manganese oxide.In conclusion I wish to thank I. A. Karpovich for his interest in this work.     

The smallestC*-algebra for canonical commutations relations

We consider theC*-algebras which contain the Weyl operators when the symplectic form which defines the C.C.R. is possibly degenerate. We prove that the C.C.R. are all obtained as a quotient of a universalC*-algebra by some of its ideals, and we characterize all these ideals.
