This study examined how Black students responded to the utilization of culturally responsive stories in their mathematics class. All students in the two classes participated in mathematics lessons that began with an African American story (culturally responsive to this population), followed by mathematical discussion and concluded with solving problems that correlated to the story. The researcher observed and recorded responses by students during each part of these lessons with protocols. Students independently reflected weekly by answering five questions to share their perspective on the African American stories. The teacher reflected on each lesson as well, describing thoughts on how these students responded to the story in each lesson. This paper examines the analyzed data from the target audience: Black students. Results revealed that Black students responded to the use of African American stories with high self‐rated levels of engagement and enjoyment and that the stories helped them think about mathematics to varying degrees. Since students who are engaged and are thinking about mathematics are more likely to achieve mathematical understanding, the researcher concludes that this strategy should continue to be tested in diverse classrooms with an emphasis on student reflection to determine if the outcomes are transferable and generalizable.  相似文献

Two strategies for the synthesis of the icetexane diterpenoids icetexone and epi-icetexone that rely on Ga(III)-catalyzed cycloisomerization of alkynyl indene substrates to yield fused [6-7-6] tricycles have been explored. In the first approach, access to a tricycle bearing a gem-dimethyl group paved the way for explorations of C–H functionalization of one of the methyl groups in close proximity to a hydroxyl-directing group. This approach was ultimately unsuccessful and led only to ring cleaved products. In the second approach, an alkynyl indene substrate bearing a cyano substituent was utilized, which was effective in providing a functional handle to access the icetexone subclass of diterpenoids. A key epoxide opening/diazene rearrangement sequence was utilized to complete a formal synthesis of icetexone and epi-icetexone, which is discussed in detail. Furthermore, the cyano-containing substrate has been prepared in enantioenriched form using a Rh-catalyzed conjugate addition reaction, which now provides a route to the enantioselective synthesis of these natural products.  相似文献

The aspect of magnetic transferability was established using an automated magnetic particle transfer workstation. Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles were synthesized via conventional co-precipitation procedure. Their transferability was determined in addition to several commercial nanoparticles that ranged in diameter, surface functionality, and composition. Transmission and scanning electron micrographs and infrared spectrum, respectively, provided size and surface information on the synthesized particles for comparison to commercially available magnetic nanoparticles.  相似文献

The copper complexes of 2‐furaldehyde and furan oximes have previously demonstrated potent cytotoxicity, L1210 DNA synthesis inhibition, DNA topoisomerase II inhibition and DNA fragmentation. Currently a series of cobalt metal complexes of 2‐furaldehyde oximes were compared with copper complexes of furan oximes to determine whether the type of metal is important to the cytotoxicity and mode of action of the complexes. The cobalt complexes of furan oximes, like the copper complexes, were shown to be cytotoxic to suspended tumor cell lines, e.g. leukemias, lymphomas, acute monocytic leukemia and HeLa‐S3 uterine carcinoma. The cobalt complexes did not demonstrate dramatic cytotoxicity against the growth of tumors derived from solid human tumor lines. The cobalt complexes preferentially inhibited L1210 DNA synthesis, followed by inhibition of RNA and protein synthesis from 25 to 100 µM over 60 min. These agents, like the copper complexes of 2‐furaldehyde and furan oximes, were inhibitors of DNA polymerase α activity and de novo purine synthesis with marginal inhibition of ribonucleoside reductase and dihydrofolate reductase activities with DNA fragmentation. Unlike the copper complexes, the cobalt complexes did not inhibit L1210 DNA topoisomerase II activity but did reduce thymidylate synthetase activity. Thus, varying the type of metal within the complexes of 2‐furaldehyde and furan oximes produces differences in both cytotoxicity and mode of action. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Critical limiting factors in next generation electrode materials for rechargeable batteries include short lifetimes, poor reaction reversibility, and safety concerns. Many of these challenges are caused by detrimental interactions at the interfaces between electrode materials and the electrolyte. Thermally annealed polyacrylonitrile has recently shown empirical success in mitigating such detrimental interactions when used in conjunction with alloy anode materials, though the mechanisms by which it does so are not well understood. This is a common problem in the battery community: an additive or a coating improves certain battery characteristics, but without a deeper understanding of how or why, design rules to further motivate the design of new chemistries can''t be developed. Herein, we systematically investigate the effect of heating parameters on the properties of annealed polyacrylonitrile to identify the structural basis for such beneficial properties. We find that sufficiently long annealing times and control over temperature result in the formation of conjugated imine domains. When sufficiently large, the conjugated domains can be electrochemically reduced in a Li-ion half-cell battery, effectively n-doping the polymeric matrix and allowing it to become a mixed-conductor, with the ability to conduct both the Li-ions and electrons needed for reversible lithiation of an interdispersed alloy active material like antimony. Not only do those relationships inform design principles for annealed polyacrylonitrile containing electrodes, but they also identify new strategies in the development of mixed-conducting materials for use in next generation battery electrodes.

Thermal annealing of polyacrylonitrile results in the formation of conjugated imine domains. When of sufficient size, these conjugated domains can be electrochemically activated to exhibit both electronic and ionic conductivity.  相似文献

The serine protease factor Xa (FXa) is a key enzyme in the blood coagulation cascade, acting at the convergent point of the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways. In our search for Fxa inhibitors as novel anticoagulants we identified the active isomer of the published FXa inhibitor, 2,7-bis-(4-amidinobenzilidine)-cycloheptan-l-one (BABCH), as the (Z, Z) isomer (ZK-805412, FXa Ki=0.66 nM). This photochemically labile (Z, Z) isomer has served as a conformationally rigid template for the development of distinct classes of potent, selective and orally active FXa inhibitors. Template evolution, in vitro SAR studies as well as our efforts to optimize in vivo parameters will be discussed.  相似文献
