In this paper, we analyze fluid queues driven by truncated birth-death processes with general birth and death rates. We compute the equilibrium distribution of the content of the fluid buffer by providing efficient numerical procedures to compute the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the associated real sign-asymmetric tridiagonal matrix. The in vivo biocompatibility of pure sapphire and borosilicate glass (BSG) implanted onto the cerebral cortex was studied via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histopathology. Each implant was embedded onto the cortical surface of an adult rat brain for a total of 28 days. Rats underwent surgery with and without implants, and rats with purposely damaged cortical implant sites were also studied. Each animal was imaged via MRI before surgery as well as 10 and 28 days after the surgery. Histopathological results of animals were obtained on the 28th day to determine the specific effect on neurons. Despite the fact that sapphire has been widely used in a variety of medical implants, both MRI and histopathological results indicate that pure sapphire is not biocompatible with the cerebral cortex. A cine series of tagged magnetic resonance (MR) images of the tongue is used to measure tongue motion and its internal deformation during speech. Tagged images are collected in three slice orientations (sagittal, coronal, and axial) during repetitions of the utterance "disouk" (/disuk/). A new technique called harmonic phase MRI (HARP-MRI) is used to process the tagged MR images to measure the internal deformation of the tongue. The measurements include displacement and velocity of tissue points, principal strains, and strain in the line-of-action of specific muscles. These measurements are not restricted to tag intersections, but can be calculated at every pixel in the image. The different motion measurements complement each other in understanding the tongue kinematics and in hypothesizing the internal muscle activity of the tongue. 相似文献

Mucin glycoproteins contribute to a wide range of cell-surface phenomena. Their dense glycosylation is believed to confer structural rigidity as well as molecular extension beyond the glycocalyx, crucial to interaction with the cellular environment. However, controlled investigations of the relationships between glycosylation, rigidity, and extension of membrane-bound mucins or similar macromolecules are lacking, largely because of the absence of tractable experimental models. We have therefore made use of recently developed synthetic mucin mimetics, in which the core alpha-GalNAc monosaccharides of natural mucins are conjugated to a lipidated polymer backbone and anchored to fluid, solid-supported lipid membranes, and fluorescence interference contrast microscopy, an optical technique that provides nanometer-scale topographic information about objects near a reflective interface, to measure the orientation of the mucin mimics relative to the membrane plane. Data from two independent probes, fluorophores conjugated directly to the polymer backbone and fluorescent proteins bound to the sugar groups, unexpectedly show that the mucin mimic molecules lie flat along the membrane. Rigidity and core glycosylation are therefore insufficient to ensure molecular projection outward from a membrane surface. 相似文献

The light-induced antibacterial activity of symmetric and asymmetric oligophenylene ethynylenes (OPEs) was investigated against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. To understand the light-induced biocidal effect better, the transient absorption and triplet lifetime of OPEs were studied in methanol and water. A higher triplet lifetime was observed for OPE samples in water than in methanol. The magnitudes of the changes in optical density (ΔOD) of the S-OPE-n(H) series of symmetric oligomers are much higher than that of the asymmetric OPE-n series in water and are generally correlated with the singlet oxygen yield. It was found that the antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria is size-, concentration-, and time-dependent. The light-induced antibacterial activity may result from the coordinated interactions of membrane disruption and interfacial or intracellular singlet oxygen generation, and the dominant factor is most likely the latter. The results obtained in this study will aid in the design of more efficient biocides in the future. 相似文献

Gymnema sylvestre is a plant containing the triterpenoid gymnemagenin, which is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an antidiabetic agent. The objective of this study was to determine whether endophytic fungi, isolated from G. sylvestre, produce gymnemagenin. We isolated an endophytic fungal strain from the leaves of G. sylvestre which produces gymnemagenin in the medium. The fungus was identified as Penicillium oxalicum based on morphological and molecular methods. The strain had a component with the same TLC Rf value and HPLC retention time as authentic gymnemagenin. The presence of gymnemagenin was further confirmed by FTIR, UV, and 1H NMR analyses. 相似文献

ABSTRACTLike bulk, Co1–xFexS2 nanoparticles also display an anomaly at x = 0.5. The borderline contiguous Co1–xFexS2 (x = 0.4 and 0.5) nanoparticles were synthesized with colloidal method and characterized for pyrite structure using various techniques, viz., X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), S K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transformed infra-red spectroscopy. The report presents the effect of high pressure on the borderline compositions using the Mössbauer spectroscopic and electrical resistivity techniques. Magnetic measurements on the system showed drastic lowering of Tc due to nanosize of the particles. With increased pressure, quadrupole splitting showed an expected trend of increase to attain a peak representing a second-order phase transition between 4 and 5 GPa for both the compositions. The pressure coefficient of electrical resistivity varied from –0.02 GPa to –0.06 GPa across transition pressure indicating a sluggish nature of transition. This is the first report of pressure effect on nanosized borderline compositions. 相似文献
