Lagrangian Duality in Set-Valued Optimization

In this paper, we study optimization problems where the objective function and the binding constraints are set-valued maps and the solutions are defined by means of set-relations among all the images sets (Kuroiwa, D. in Takahashi, W., Tanaka, T. (eds.) Nonlinear analysis and convex analysis, pp. 221–228, 1999). We introduce a new dual problem, establish some duality theorems and obtain a Lagrangian multiplier rule of nonlinear type under convexity assumptions. A necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the existence of saddle points are given. The authors thank the two referees for valuable comments and suggestions on early versions of the paper. Mössbauer studies of the re-entrant spin-glass behaviour of Fe–Al alloys

Fe–Al alloys around the concentration of 30 at. % Al present re-entrant spin-glass behaviour at low temperatures. This behaviour is not completely understood and Mössbauer spectroscopy, combined with other experimental techniques, is useful to describe and explain this behaviour. Results show that the Mössbauer spectra coincide with the magnetic behaviour showed in literature and they can be explained as a magnetic cluster system whose magnetic clusters are getting smaller when the temperature is decreasing. When the temperature is reaching to the spin-glass transition at 92 K the spins in the paramagnetic matrix are moving slower and below this transition the spins are completely frozen.     

Effect of pH and gaseous ammonia flow rate on the composition and structure of ammonium uranate

Ammonium uranate was precipitated from uranyl nitrate solution using gaseous ammonia, then filtered, washed with demineralized water and dried. The influence of pH and ammonia flow rate on their composition and structure were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis, making use of additional information obtained from infrared analysis.     

Diffraction of transverse horizontal waves in Fibonacci piezoelectric superlattices

The transfer matrix and global matrix techniques are used in the analysis of diffraction of transverse horizontal waves in piezoelectric superlattices. The system is composed of a set of different piezoelectric layers with quasiperiodic structure according to the Fibonacci sequence. The diffraction spectrum of different configurations of piezoelectric Fibonacci structures is studied. Numerical results for the diffraction spectrum for the piezoelectric Fibonacci superlattice are obtained and a comparison between the results of the transfer and global matrix methods is given, exhibiting the advantage of the latter.     

Stable boundary layers in a diffusion problem with nonlinear reaction at the boundary

We prove the existence of nonconstant stable stationary solutions of an evolution problem with a nonlinear reaction acting on the boundary. These solutions present layers at certain points of the boundary. We also study the behavior of these solutions as the small parameter appearing in the equation approaches zero and show some stability properties of the profiles given by these equilibrium solutions.     

Rigidity of codimension two indefinite spheres

We describe all isometric immersions f:S _n ^s S _s ⁿ +2/S _s ⁿ n–s4, whenever the set of totally geodesic points does not disconnect S _s ⁿ , where S _n ^s denotes the complete n-dimensional indefinite Riemannian space form of constant positive curvature 1 and signature s.     

Self-assembled peptide tubelets with 7 A pores

Here we report the preparation and structural characteristics of self-assembling peptide tubelets composed of 32-membered rings formed of alternating alpha-amino acids and cis-3-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acids. The tubelets possess a partial hydrophobic core environment, provided by the projection of the cyclohexane C2 methylene moiety into the lumen, and a Van der Waals pore diameter of about 7 A.     

Asymmetry and magnetism in bis(oximato)-bridged heterobimetallic compounds: a computational approach

A density functional study of exchange coupling was carried out for a series of heterobinuclear oximato-bridged transition metal complexes. Model calculations were used to examine the influence of the electronic configuration of the metal atoms on the coupling constants. This analysis was complemented by a study of the variation of the coupling constant with the most usual structural distortions within this family of compounds. The influence of the nature of the terminal ligands as well as that of the symmetry on the bridge were also investigated.     

Complexation of the Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Nabumetone with Modified and Unmodified Cyclodextrins

The inclusion of the anti-inflammatory drug, Nabumetone, in -, - and hydroxypropyl--cyclodextrin (CDs) is studied using UV-VIS absorption and steady-state fluorescence emission. Binding constants and thermodynamic parameters of complex formation are determined by spectrofluorimetry. The inclusion phenomena of Nabumetone with the three cyclodextrins is compared with that of the well known similar anti-inflammatory drug Naproxen. In the case of Nabumetone pronounced differences are observed in the complexation process with each cyclodextrin whereas the respective Naproxen complexes are nearly identical. ¹H-NMR experiments show that the inclusion process in Nabumetone can occur either through the substituents in the -2 (butanone) or -6 (methoxy) positions in the naphthalene ring.
