Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to deposit 1-600 monolayers of Al(2)O(3) on Ag nanotriangles fabricated by nanosphere lithography (NSL). Each monolayer of Al(2)O(3) has a thickness of 1.1 A. It is demonstrated that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) nanosensor can detect Al(2)O(3) film growth with atomic spatial resolution normal to the nanoparticle surface. This is approximately 10 times greater spatial resolution than that in our previous long-range distance-dependence study using multilayer self-assembled monolayer shells. The use of ALD enables the study of both the long- and short-range distance dependence of the LSPR nanosensor in a single unified experiment. Ag nanoparticles with fixed in-plane widths and decreasing heights yield larger sensing distances. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, and quartz crystal microbalance measurements are used to study the growth mechanism. It is proposed that the growth of Al(2)O(3) is initiated by the decomposition of trimethylaluminum on Ag. Semiquantitative theoretical calculations were compared with the experimental results and yield excellent agreement.  相似文献

Recent studies have indicated that 5-methylcytosine (5mC) residues in DNA can be oxidized and potentially deaminated to the corresponding thymine analogs. Some of these oxidative DNA damages have been implicated as new epigenetic markers that could have profound influences on chromatin function as well as disease pathology. In response to oxidative damage, the cells have a complex network of repair systems that recognize, remove and rebuild the lesions. However, how the modified nucleobases are detected and repaired remains elusive, largely due to the limited availability of synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing these novel DNA modifications. A concise and divergent synthetic strategy to 5mC derivatives has been developed. These derivatives were further elaborated to the corresponding phosphoramidites to enable the site-specific incorporation of modified nucleobases into ODNs using standard solid-phase DNA synthesis. The synthetic methodology, along with the panel of ODNs, is of great value to investigate the biological functions of epigenetically important nucleobases, and to elucidate the diversity in chemical lesion repair.

A divergent approach has been developed for the synthesis of epigenetically important pyrimidine 2′-deoxynucleosides from one common precursor. These nucleosides were incorporated into oligodeoxynucleotides for the survey of uracil DNA glycosylases.  相似文献

This study focuses on the use of surface-coated reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to reduce membrane fouling in produced water purification. A series of crosslinked PEG-based hydrogels were synthesized using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as the crosslinker and poly(ethylene glycol) acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, or acrylic acid as comonomers. The hydrogels were highly water permeable, with water permeabilities ranging from 10.0 to 17.8 (L μm)/(m2 h bar). The hydrogels were applied to a commercial RO membrane (AG brackish water RO membrane from GE Water and Process Technologies). The water flux of coated membranes and a series-resistance model were used to estimate coating thickness; the coatings were approximately 2 μm thick. NaCl rejection for both uncoated and coated membranes was 99.0% or greater, and coating the membranes appeared to increase salt rejection, in contrast to predictions from the series-resistance model. Zeta potential measurements showed a small reduction in the negative charge of coated membranes relative to uncoated RO membranes. Model oil/water emulsions were used to probe membrane fouling. Emulsions were prepared with either a cationic or an anionic surfactant. Surfactant charge played a significant role in membrane fouling even in the absence of oil. A cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), caused a strong decline in water flux while an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), resulted in little or no flux decline. In the presence of DTAB, the AG RO membrane water flux immediately dropped to 30% of its initial value, but in the presence of SDS, its water flux gradually decreased to 74% of its initial value after 24 h. DTAB-fouled membranes had lower salt rejection than membranes not exposed to DTAB. In contrast, SDS-fouled membranes had higher salt rejection than membranes not exposed to SDS, with rejection values increasing, in some cases, from 99.0 to 99.8% or higher. In both surfactant tests, coated membranes exhibited less flux decline than uncoated AG RO membranes. Additionally, coated membranes experienced little fouling in the presence of an oil/water emulsion prepared from DTAB and n-decane. For example, after 24 h the water flux of the AG RO membrane fell to 26% of its initial value, while the water flux of a PEGDA-coated AG RO membrane was 73% of its initial value.  相似文献

Herein is reported the highly chemo- and regioselective synthesis of 3-vinyl-4-formyl and 3-vinyl-5-formylisoxazolidines from enals, hydroxylamines and dipolarophiles under thermal conditions. The reaction works in high yields for a large array of substituted enals and a variety of dipolarophiles. The reaction provides the respective isoxazolidines with high chemoselectivity, stereospecificity and diastereoselectivity without significant purification. The substitution pattern on the dipolarophile directs the regioselectivity of the reaction to provide either 3,4- or 3,5-substituted isoxazolidine isomers. This method provides access to a wide variety of highly substituted, stereochemically dense isoxazolidine scaffolds from the selective reaction of the three proposed components.  相似文献

A new method to stabilize and functionalize surfaces for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is demonstrated. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to deposit a sub-1-nm alumina layer on silver film-over-nanosphere (AgFON) substrates. The resulting overlayer maintains and stabilizes the SERS activity of the underlying silver while presenting the surface chemistry of the alumina overlayer, a commonly used polar adsorbent in chromatographic separations. The relative affinity of analytes for alumina-modified AgFON substrates can be determined by their polarity. On the basis of SERS measurements, dipicolinic acid displays the strongest binding to the ALD alumina-modified AgFON among a set of pyridine derivatives with varying polarity. This strong affinity for carboxylate groups makes the SERS substrate an ideal candidate for bacillus spores detection using the dipicolinate biomarker. The SERS signal from extracted dipicolinate was measured over the spore concentration range 10(-14)-10(-12) M to determine the saturation binding capacity of the alumina-modified AgFON surface. The adsorption constant was determined to be Kspore = 9.0 x 10(13) M(-1). A 10-s data collection time is capable of achieving a limit of detection of approximately 1.4 x 10(3) spores. The shelf life of prefabricated substrates is at least 9 months prior to use. In comparison to the bare AgFON substrates, the ALD-modified AgFON substrates demonstrate twice the sensitivity with 6 times shorter data acquisition time and 7 times longer temporal stability. ALD expands the palette of available chemical methods to functionalize SERS substrates, which will enable improved and diverse chemical control over the nature of analyte-surface binding for biomedical, homeland security, and environmental applications.  相似文献
