Unusual Spirodecane Sesquiterpenes and a Fumagillol Analogue from Cordyceps ophioglossoides

Investigation of the cultured mycelia of Cordyceps ophioglossoides resulted in the isolation and characterization of three new unusual spiro[4.5]decane sesquiterpenes, cordycepol A ( 1 ), cordycepol B ( 2 ), and cordycepol C ( 3 ), and a new fumagillol analogue, cordycol ( 4 ). Their structures were established by spectroscopic means. The cytotoxic activities were also evaluated, compounds 3 and 4 showing their IC₅₀ values in the range of 12–33 μg/ml against HeLa and HepG2 (Table 3). In addition, 3 and 4 were not obviously harmful towards normal liver cell lines LO2, showing IC₅₀ values above 80 μg/ml.     

Two New Abietane Diterpenoids from the Roots of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f.

Two new abietane‐type diterpenoids, named triptobenzene R ( 1 ) and triptobenzene S ( 2 ), together with three known abietane‐type diterpenoids, triptophenolide ( 3 ), triptonodiol ( 4 ), and triptonoterpene methyl ether ( 5 ), were isolated from the roots of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook . f. Their structures and relative configurations were established by detailed spectral studies, including 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR (HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY), and HR‐ESI‐TOF‐MS, and by comparison with published data. Their absolute configurations were assigned by the CD technique, applied for the first time to abietane diterpenes from Tripterygium wilfordii. Compound 2 is the first abietane‐type norditerpenoid isolated from the genus Tripterygium.     

Prenylated Benzene Metabolites from Melicope pteleifolia

Chemical investigation on the stem and root of Melicope pteleifolia afforded three new prenylated benzene metabolites as racemic mixtures, named pteleifolins A–C ( 1 – 3 , resp.). Their gross structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, especially 2D‐NMR experiments. An enantiomer resolution of (±)‐ 1 using chiral HPLC was performed, and the absolute configuration of the enantiomers were determined to be (+)‐(S)‐ 1 and (?)‐(R)‐ 1 by means of circular‐dichroism analysis.     

Doped Nano‐Sized Copper(I) Oxide (Cu2O) on Melamine?Formaldehyde Resin: a Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Nano Catalyst for ‘Click’ Synthesis of Some Novel 1H‐1,2,3‐Triazole Derivatives Having Antibacterial Activity

A facile and simple protocol for the 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition of organic azides with terminal alkynes catalyzed by doped nano‐sized Cu₂O on melamine? formaldehyde resin (nano‐Cu₂O? MFR) as a new and convenient heterogeneous catalyst is described. In this method, ‘click’ cycloaddition of various structurally diverse β‐azido alcohols and alkynes in the presence of nano‐Cu₂O? MFR in H₂O/THF 1 : 2 furnished the corresponding 1,4‐disubstituted 1H‐1,2,3‐triazole adducts 1a – 1o in good to excellent yields at room temperature (Scheme and Table 3). The nano‐Cu₂O? MFR was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis, and FT‐IR. The nano‐Cu₂O? MFR could be easily recovered and recycled from the reaction mixture and reused for many consecutive trials without significant decrease in activity (Table 4). The in vitro antibacterial activities of all synthesized compounds were tested on several Gram‐positive and/or Gram‐negative bacteria (Table 5). The results demonstrate the promising antibacterial activity for some of the synthesized compounds.     

Bismuth Trichloride–Catalyzed C‐Alkylation of Pyrroles with Electron‐Deficient Olefins

The BiCl₃‐catalyzed reaction of pyrroles with electron‐deficient olefins generated the corresponding Michael adducts in high yields.     

Stereoselective Synthesis of the Optical Isomers of a New Muscarinic Receptor Antagonist,HL‐031120

We present here a practical stereoselective synthetic method to produce enantiopure isomers of a new muscarinic receptor antagonist, HL‐031120 (3‐quinuclidinyl‐2′‐cyclopentyl‐2′‐hydroxy‐2′‐phenylacetate, I). Four optical isomers were effectively by stereoselective synthesized using pivaldehyde as steric hindrance agent from the chiral starting material, (S) or (R)‐mandelic acid. The isomers were obtained with 70–76% yields in 98–99% e.e.     

Solvent‐Free Aerobic Chemoselective Oxidation of β‐Ionone catalyzed by N‐Hydroxyphthalimide/Co(acac)2

β‐Ionone was oxidized with O₂ under solvent‐free conditions catalyzed by an N‐hydroxyphthalimide/Co(acac)₂ system in mild conditions with high conversion and excellent selectivity to oxo‐β‐ionone or 5,6‐epoxy‐β‐ionone in different reaction conditions, respectively.     

Synthesis of Novel Pyrrolo[1′,5′‐a]‐1,8‐naphthyridine Derivatives through a Facile One‐Pot Process

Novel pyrrolo[1′,5′‐a]‐1,8‐naphthyridine compounds have been synthesized through a facile one‐pot process by the reaction of the corresponding 1,8‐naphthyridines with aliphatic anhydride. The structures were established by spectroscopic data. Further X‐ray crystal analysis of 4′‐acetyl‐7‐methyl‐pyrrolo[1′,5′‐a]‐1,8‐naphthyridine (1) identifies its intriguing molecular structure and reveals the strong π‐π stacking.     

Synthesis of Some C‐3,4,5‐Substituted 2,6‐Dimethyl‐1,4‐dihydropyridines (4‐DHPs)

A series of C‐3,4,5‐substituted 2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐dihydropyridines (1,4‐DHPs) with pharmacological properties were prepared by a variation from the classical Hantzsch synthesis. The procedure involves treatment of the respective aldehyde with either ethyl‐3‐aminocrotonate or 3‐aminocrotonitrile in anhydrous acetic acid at temperatures not exceeding 60°C, thus minimizing by‐product formation. The structures of title compounds were elucidated by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FTIR, and elemental analysis.     

Organic Reactions in Ionic Liquids: Ionic Liquid Ethylammonium Nitrate–Promoted Knoevenagel Condensation of Meldrum's Acid With Aromatic Aldehydes

The Knoevenagel condensation of Meldrum's acid with aromatic aldehydes proceeded efficiently in a reusable ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate, at room temperature in the absence of any catalyst with high yields.
