A simple protocol for the preparation of β-enamino ketones catalyzed by NbOPO4 under solvent free conditions

A novel application of the highly stable niobium oxide phosphate (NbOPO₄) as an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of β-enamino ketones under solvent-free conditions is described. This protocol, exhibits attractive yields, short reaction periods, lower loading of catalyst and high chemoselectivity.     

Determination of degree of conversion as a function of depth of a photo-initiated dental restoration composite—III application to commercial Prodigy Condensable™

In this third work, we evaluated the degree of conversion (DC) versus depth of dental filling composite named Prodigy Condensable™ using infrared spectroscopy. Confirming previous results, there was a gradual reduction of DC with increasing depth but the composite exhibited extreme values of DC, an upper value (45.9%) on the surface and a lower one (6.1%) at a depth of 5 mm. The composite presented the worst performance among materials studied. The composite formulation was 80% of inorganic fillers and BisfenolA/dimethacrylate (BisGMA) (18%)/triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (TEGDMA) (2.0%) as monomers. As stated before, type/ratio/viscosity of monomers and type, amount, size and size distribution of fillers all together had an important role in the cure reaction contributing to the final performance of the composite.     

Development and validation of a RP-HPLC method for Roflumilast and its degradation products

Roflumilast is a phosphodiesterase type 4 inhibitor that is administered orally as a long-term, in the clinical treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Launched in 2010 for the European market, it currently does not have an official monograph. Here, a reproducible gradient RP-HPLC method was developed and validated for the separation and determination of Roflumilast in the presence of its six major degradation products. Separation was performed on a C₁₈ analytical column (250?×?4.6?mm, 5?µm) with a mobile phase-A of ACN and a phase-B of ammonium acetate buffer (5?mM, pH 4.2) containing triethylamine (0.5% v/v). The most effective RP-HPLC gradient program was determined to be 0/80, 35/10, 36/80, 40/80 (time in minutes/% mobile phase-B). The flow rate was 1.0?ml/min and the column temperature was 25°C. The success of separation of the degradation products with different chemical characteristics was obtained by extending the time of the gradient, changing the proportion of the mobile phases and increasing the velocity of the flow. Two detectors were evaluated for the identification of degradation products and Roflumilast: a diode-arrary detector and a charged aerosol detector. The inability of the charged aerosol detector to dectect one of the six degradation products indicated that the method developed with RP-HPLC and the diode-array detector was more suitable for Roflumilast analysis. The method was validated according to specificity, linearity, LOD, LOQ, accuracy, precision and robustness.     

The Molecular Structure of gauche‐1,3‐Butadiene: Experimental Establishment of Non‐planarity

The planarity of the second stable conformer of 1,3‐butadiene, the archetypal diene for the Diels–Alder reaction in which a planar conjugated diene and a dienophile combine to form a ring, is not established. The most recent high level calculations predicted the species to adopt a twisted, gauche structure owing to steric interactions between the inner terminal hydrogens rather than a planar, cis structure favored by the conjugation of the double bonds. The structure cis‐1,3‐butadiene is unambiguously confirmed experimentally to indeed be gauche with a substantial dihedral angle of 34°, in excellent agreement with theory. Observation of two tunneling components indicates that the molecule undergoes facile interconversion between two equivalent enantiomeric forms. Comparison of experimentally determined structures for gauche‐ and trans‐butadiene provides an opportunity to examine the effects of conjugation and steric interactions.     

Kinetics of ethanol fermentation with high biomass concentration considering the effect of temperature

A model of ethanol fermentation considering the effect of temperature was developed and validated. Experiments were performed in a temperature range from 28 to 40°C in continuous mode with total cell recycling using a tangential microfiltration system. The developed model considered substrate, product and biomass inhibition, as well as an active cell phase (viable) and an inactive (dead) phase. The kinetic parameters were described as functions of temperature.     

Gaps in the number of generators of monomial Togliatti systems

Let $I_{d,n}?k[x_0,?,x_n]$ be a minimal monomial Togliatti system of forms of degree d. In [4], Mezzetti and Miró-Roig proved that the minimal number of generators $\mu (I_{d,n})$ of $I_{d,n}$ lies in the interval $[2n+1,\left(\begin{array}{c}n+d?1\\ n?1\end{array}\right)]$. In this paper, we prove that for $n\ge 4$ and $d\ge 3$, the integer values in $[2n+3,3n?1]$ cannot be realized as the number of minimal generators of a minimal monomial Togliatti system. We classify minimal monomial Togliatti systems $I_{d,n}?k[x_0,?,x_n]$ of forms of degree d with $\mu (I_{d,n})=2n+2$ or 3n (i.e. with the minimal number of generators reaching the border of the non-existence interval). Finally, we prove that for $n=4$, $d\ge 3$ and $\mu \in [9,\left(\begin{array}{c}d+3\\ 3\end{array}\right)]?\{11\}$ there exists a minimal monomial Togliatti system $I_{d,n}?k[x_0,?,x_n]$ of forms of degree d with $\mu (I_{n,d})=\mu$.     

A bound on the treewidth of planar even-hole-free graphs

The class of planar graphs has unbounded treewidth, since the k×k grid, ∀k∈N, is planar and has treewidth k. So, it is of interest to determine subclasses of planar graphs which have bounded treewidth. In this paper, we show that if G is an even-hole-free planar graph, then it does not contain a 9×9 grid minor. As a result, we have that even-hole-free planar graphs have treewidth at most 49.
