On the mathematical foundations of hyperthermia therapy

Hyperthermia is an aid to standard cancer therapy. The aim is to heat up a tumour region inside the patient's body with the help of microwave radiation. The microwayes are generated by some suitable antenna array. Here we investigate the control properties of such antenna configurations and determine their resolution capabilities. We will define the hyperthermia operator, which can produce every field of any antenna array up to any degree of accuracy. We shall see that this operator is compact and we are able to compute a singular system under general assumptions explicitly. This, together with a detailed knowledge of the decay of the singular values, constitutes the tools with which we treat the previously stated problems. We examine the propagation of microwave radiation in homogeneous media and then carry over the results obtained to the case of inhomogeneous media.     

Directional crystallization of B4C-NbB2 and B4C-MoB2 eutectic compositions

We studied the directional crystallization of different compositions in B₄C-NbB₂ and B₄C-MoB₂ systems. The eutectic compositions for both systems are evaluated. It is shown that in the first system the rod-like eutectic structure is formed, in second, the “Chinese hieroglyphics”. In both cases high hardness and high microplasticity are observed, which are much more than for individual component phases. These compositions may be considered as a new kind of self-strengthening composite materials.

Convergence problem in ab initio crystal orbital calculations

The various computational procedures for treating the problem of lattice summations in ab initio crystal orbital calculations are briefly reviewed and the cutoff problem is discussed. Several numerical examples are presented for demonstrating the fast convergence of the total energy per unit cell with respect to the inclusion of further neighbors' interactions, in case reasonable cutoff procedures are applied. The importance of electrostatic considerations for the interpretation of long range effects is stressed.

Auslander-Reiten quivers of local,orders of finite lattice type

The classification of the Auslander-Reiten quivers of the local orders of finite lattice type is completed. For this purpose, it is shown—using the results of [7]—that to the list of the known Auslander-Reiten quivers of the local Bäckström orders of finite lattice type [11], [14] and of the local Gorenstein orders of finite type and their minimal overorders [18] one has to add two remaining types of valued translation quivers to obtain a complete list of all Auslander-Reiten quivers of the local orders of finite lattice type.
