Filtered optical feedback induced frequency dynamics in semiconductor lasers

We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that, by spectrally filtering the delayed optical feedback into a semiconductor laser, one can elicit novel dynamics in the frequency of the laser output light on a time scale that is set by the delay time of the feedback. In particular, we show that through a judicious choice of the filter bandwidth, and its frequency relative to that of the laser, one can produce controlled oscillations in the frequency of light from the laser.     

Adsorption of cobalt ions on the "electrolytic solution/gamma-alumina" interface studied by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS)

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was used for the first time to investigate the adsorption of the [Co(H2O)6]2+ ions on the interface developed between the surface of the gamma-alumina particles and the electrolytic aqueous solutions used for the preparation of cobalt-supported gamma-alumina catalysts by equilibrium deposition filtration. The formation of inner-sphere Co(II) surface complexes in which Co(II) is in octahedral symmetry was confirmed. A deconvolution peak centered at approximately 585 nm was attributed to the exchange of one aqua ligand with one AlxOHy (x = 1, 2, or 3; y = 0 or 1) negatively charged surface group resulting in the formation of mononuclear monosubstituted inner-sphere Co(II) complexes at a Co(II) surface concentration equal to 0.02 micromol of Co(II)/m2. It was inferred that as the surface Co(II) concentration increases the formation of disubstituted and/or trisubstituted surface complexes is favored with respect to the formation of monosubstituted Co(II) surface complexes. A deconvolution peak centered at approximately 640 nm was attributed to the exchange of one or more aqua ligands with bridging hydroxo ligands (Co-O-H). The relative magnitude of this peak increases with the Co(II) surface concentration, reflecting the increasing formation of binuclear, oligonuclear, and multinuclear Co(II) surface complexes and then the formation of the Co(II) surface precipitate.     

Synthesis of methanesulfonyl chloride (MSC) from methane and sulfuryl chloride

Methane is transformed selectively to methanesulfonyl chloride at low temperature by liquid-phase reaction of methane with SO(2)Cl(2) in the presence of a free radical initiator and a promoter using 100% H(2)SO(4) as the solvent.     

Direct oxidation of methane to acetic acid catalyzed by Pd2+ and Cu2+ in the presence of molecular oxygen

Methane is catalytically converted primarily to acetic acid in concentrated sulfuric acid using a combination of Pd(2+) and Cu(2+) in the presence of oxygen.     

Geometrothermodynamics of a Charged Black Hole of String Theory

The thermodynamics of the Gibbons–Maeda–Garfinkle–Horowitz–Strominger charged black hole from string theory is reformulated within the context of the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics. The geometry of the space of equilibrium states is curved, but we show that the thermodynamic curvature does not diverge at the phase transition point expected when the black hole solution becomes a naked singularity. This provides a counterexample to the conventional notion that such a divergence signals the occurrence of a second-order phase transition.     

On Thermodynamical Relation Between Rotating Charged BTZ Black Holes and Effective String Theory

In this paper we study the first law of thermodynamics for the （2＋1）-dimensional rotating charged BTZ black hole considering a pair of thermodynamical systems constructed with the two horizons of this solution. We show that these two systems are similar to the right and left movers of string theory and that the temperature associated with the black hole is the harmonic mean of the temperatures associated with these two systems.     

Quantum electronic transport: Linear and nonlinear conductance from the Keldysh approach

This is a review of the derivation of the Landauer conductance using the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism and the equations-of-motion (EOM) method. We consider the elastic quantum electronic transport through a multi-lead device and treat the conductor in the mean-field approximation. This is suitable for open quantum dots as well as for several molecular systems where charging effects are negligible. The focus of the presentation is to unveil the technical issues involved in the formalism. We show how the Landauer conductance emerges as a linear term in the current-voltage I-V characteristics and indicate how to go beyond this regime. We address the connection of the NEGF approach to recent developments in molecular transport and discuss the problems that arise when one tries to include interaction effects beyond the mean field.     

Binary boron-rich borides of magnesium: single-crystal investigations and properties of MgB(7) and the new boride Mg(∼5)B(44)

Single crystals of dark-red MgB(7) were grown from the elements in a Cu-melt. The crystal structure (Pearson symbol oI64; space group Imma; a = 10.478(2) ?, b = 5.977(1) ?, c = 8.125(2) ?, 2842 reflns, 48 params, R(1)(F) = 0.018, R(2)(I) = 0.034) consists of a hexagonal-primitive packing of B(12)-icosahedra and B(2)-units in trigonal-prismatic voids. According to the UV-vis spectra and band structure calculations MgB(7) is semiconducting with an optical gap of 1.9 eV. The long B-B distance of 2.278 ? within the B(2)-unit can be seen as a weak bonding interaction. The new Mg(～5)B(44) occurs beside the well-known MgB(12) as a byproduct. Small fragments of the black crystals are dark-yellow and transparent. The crystal structure (Pearson symbol tP196, space group P4(1)2(1)2, a = 10.380(2) ?, c = 14.391(3) ?, 4080 reflns, 251 params, R(1)(F) = 0.025, R(2)(I) = 0.037) is closely related to tetragonal boron-II (t-B(192)). It consists of B(12)-icosahedra and B(19+1)-units. With a charge of -6 for the B(19+1)-units and a Mg-content of ～20 Mg-atoms per unit cell the observed Mg content in Mg(～5)B(44) is quite close to the expected value derived from simple electron counting rules. All compositions were confirmed by EDXS. The microhardness was measured on single crystals for MgB(7) (H(V) = 2125, H(K) = 2004) and MgB(12) (H(V) = 2360, H(K) = 2459).

Repeated convolution of a probability measure on leads to the central limit theorem and other limit theorems. This paper investigates what kinds of results remain without positivity. It reviews theorems due to Schoenberg, Greville, and Thomée which are motivated by applications to data smoothing (Schoenberg and Greville) and finite difference schemes (Thomée). Using Fourier transform arguments, we prove detailed decay bounds for convolution powers of finitely supported complex functions on . If M is an hermitian contraction, an estimate for the off‐diagonal entries of the powers of is obtained. This generalizes the Carne–Varopoulos Markov chain estimate.
