A new physical model based on mesoscale self-assembly is developed to simulate indentation fracture in crystalline materials. Millimeter-scale hexagonal objects exhibiting atom-like potential functions were designed and allowed to self-assemble into two-dimensional (2D) aggregates at the interface between water and perfluorodecalin. Indentation experiments were performed on these aggregates, and the stresses and strains involved in these processes were evaluated. The stress field in the aggregates was analyzed theoretically using the 2D elastic Hertz solution. Comparison of the experimental results with theoretical analysis revealed that fracture develops in regions subjected to high shear stress and some, albeit low, tensile stress. The potential for the broader application of the model is illustrated using indentation of assemblies with point defects and adatoms introduced at predetermined locations, and using a two-phase aggregate simulating a compliant film on a stiff substrate.  相似文献

We report on the specific features of the sign problem in the classical auxiliary field methodology and the strategies employed for its alleviation. In particular, we focus on a new technique based on the method of Gaussian equivalent representation of Efimov and Nogovitsin [Physica (Amsterdam) 234A, 506 (1996)]] with which we could ameliorate the convergence properties significantly. We believe that this technique can also provide an interesting possibility to reduce the sign problem of other methods of computer simulation based on a functional integral approach.  相似文献

We report a new measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter Vub made with a sample of 9.7 x 10(6) BB- events collected with the CLEO II detector. Using heavy quark theory, we combine the observed yield of leptons from semileptonic B decay in the end-point momentum interval 2.2-2.6 GeV/c with recent CLEO II data on B-->X(s)gamma to find Vub = (4.08+/-0.34+/-0.44+/-0.16+/-0.24)x10(-3), where the first two uncertainties are experimental and the last two are from theory.  相似文献

A novel class of nonlinear optical processes is described in which radiation at the nth harmonic is generated through the use of a (2n+1)-order nonlinearity. Utilizing an odd-order nonlinearity, this process allows for the generation and amplification of both odd- and even-order harmonics in isotropic materials. Additionally, this process can always be phase matched in normal-dispersion materials without the use of birefringence. Experimental results are presented in which conical third-harmonic emission is generated from a sapphire sample.  相似文献

We show that future detectors of ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray neutrinos will be able to measure neutrino-nucleon cross section, sigma(nu N), at energies as high as 10(11) GeV or higher. We find that the flux of upgoing charged leptons per unit surface area produced by neutrino interactions below the surface is inversely proportional to sigma(nu N). This contrasts with the rate of horizontal air showers (HAS) due to neutrino interactions in the atmosphere, which is proportional to sigma(nu N). Thus, by comparing the HAS and upgoing air shower rates, the neutrino-nucleon cross section can be inferred. Taken together, upgoing and horizontal rates ensure a healthy total event rate, regardless of the value of sigma(nu N).  相似文献

We suggest a novel method for significant improvement of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) spectral characteristics based on compensation of repeatable errors during the grating writing process. The method is based on an open loop scheme in which a test grating is written first and then a corrected design is obtained and implemented by writing another (compensated) grating. The results are presented for a FBG dispersion compensator.  相似文献

Conflicting results reported on the effects of hyperoxia on cerebral hemodynamics have been attributed mainly to methodical and species differences. In the present study contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) perfusion measurement was used to analyze the influence of hyperoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) = 1.0) on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) in awake, normoventilating volunteers (n = 19). Furthermore, the experiment was repeated in 20 volunteers for transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) measurement of cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery (CBFV(MCA)). When compared to normoxia (FiO2 = 0.21), hyperoxia heterogeneously influenced rCBV (4.95 +/- 0.02 to 12.87 +/- 0.08 mL/100g (FiO2 = 0.21) vs. 4.50 +/- 0.02 to 13.09 +/- 0.09 mL/100g (FiO2 = 1.0). In contrast, hyperoxia diminished rCBF in all regions (68.08 +/- 0.38 to 199.58 +/- 1.58 mL/100g/min (FiO2 = 0.21) vs. 58.63 +/- 0.32 to 175.16 +/- 1.51 mL/100g/min (FiO2 = 1.0)) except in parietal and left frontal gray matter. CBFV(MCA) remained unchanged regardless of the inspired oxygen fraction (62 +/- 9 cm/s (FiO2 = 0.21) vs. 64 +/- 8 cm/s (FiO2 = 1.0)). Finding CBFV(MCA) unchanged during hyperoxia is consistent with the present study's unchanged rCBF in parietal and left frontal gray matter. In these fronto-parietal regions predominantly fed by the middle cerebral artery, the vasoconstrictor effect of oxygen was probably counteracted by increased perfusion of foci of neuronal activity controlling general behavior and arousal.  相似文献

In a recent publication we presented a method to obtain highly resolved NMR spectra in the presence of an inhomogeneous B(0) field with the help of a matched RF gradient. If RF gradient pulses are combined with "ideal" 90 degrees pulses to form inhomogeneous z rotation pulses, the line broadening caused by the B(0) gradient can be refocused, while the full chemical shift information is maintained. This approach is of potential use for NMR spectroscopy in an inhomogeneous magnetic field produced by an "ex-situ" surface spectrometer. In this contribution, we extend this method toward two-dimensional spectroscopy with high resolution in one or both dimensions. Line narrowing in the indirect dimension can be achieved by two types of nutation echoes, thus leading to depth-sensitive NMR spectra with full chemical shift information. If the nutation echo in the indirect dimension is combined with a stroboscopic acquisition using inhomogeneous z-rotation pulses, highly resolved two-dimensional correlation spectra can be obtained in matched field gradients. Finally, we demonstrate that an INEPT coherence transfer from proton to carbon spins is possible in inhomogeneous B(0) fields. Thus, it is possible to obtain one-dimensional (13)C NMR spectra with increased sensitivity and two-dimensional HETCOR spectra in the presence of B(0) gradients of 0.4 mT/cm. These schemes may be of some value for ex-situ NMR analysis of materials and biological systems.  相似文献

We present a passively mode-locked Nd:YAG laser with 10.7-W average output power in a diffraction-limited beam. Stable self-starting mode locking with a pulse duration of 16 ps and a pulse energy of 120 nJ is obtained with a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror. The laser is directly side pumped with two 20-W diode bars. Single-pass frequency doubling in an external 5-mm-thick KTP crystal yields 3.2-W average power at 532 nm.  相似文献
