On the correlation of “hot” and “cold” electron-hole drop densities in uniaxially stressed silicon

“Hot” and “cold” electron-hole drops were studied in 〈100〉-stressed silicon by intense optical pulse excitation and gated photoluminescence measurements. We obtain varying relative densities of hot and cold EHD electrons either by choosing the delay time of the gate appropriately or by using samples of different impurity concentrations. In all cases, the spectra can entirely be fitted assuming only a homogeneous EHD-phase consisting of both, hot and cold electrons. This result is in agreement with recent theoretical work which — contrary to germanium — finds phase separation in stressed silicon not to be very likely.     

A Mössbauer effect study of Dy impurities in the h.c.p. metal Zr

The 86.8 keV, 2⁺ → 0⁺ Mössbauer resonance of ¹⁶⁰Dy has been employed to study the paramagnetic hyperfine (hf) structure of Dy impurities in the hexagonal transition metal Zr. From the observed hf splitting it is concluded that the crystalline electric field ground state is an almost pure $\text{J}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>z</mtext>}}\text{= ±}\text{1}\text{2}\text{Γ}{}_7$ Kramers' doublet with g_⊥ ? g_|. The quadrupole hf interaction and the effects of paramagnetic relaxation on the ME spectrum are also discussed.     

A green function approach to the relaxation time of phonon assisted tunneling

Although many elegant formulations of the phonon assisted tunneling problem have been given, the calculation of the relaxation time itself always has been based on the “golden rule”, which requires the artifice of a fictitious static field. In this communication the relaxation time is given by means of linear response theory, unitary transformations and an application of the Bogoliubov inequality. The artifice of a static field is no longer required.

Stress-induced magnetic easy axis in amorphous Fe40Ni40P14B6

In a ribbon of amorphous Fe₄₀Ni₄₀P₁₄B₆ (Metglas 2826) the iron spins tend to be parallel to the plane of the ribbon, but the distribution of spin directions within the plane is nearly random. When a uniaxial tensile stress is applied to the ribbon the spins become almost completely aligned parallel to the applied stress. The technique of Mössbauer polarimetry was used to detect and measure this effect.
