Static cylindrically symmetric solution of the Kaluza-Klein equations

In this paper we investigate the (static) solution of the Kaluza-Klein equations for a cylindrically symmetric current distribution. Specifically, we are interested in the fields generated by a long, cylindrical solenoid. We shall examine in some detail the concept of effective mass of a charged test particle. We shall show that, for a certain charge-to(rest)mass ratio of the test particle, the effective mass becomes imaginary at a certain distance from the axis of our solenoid.     

Solid-state interactions and drug release of teicoplanin in binary combinations with peracetylated α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins

Triacetyl α-cyclodextrin, triacetyl β-cyclodextrin and triacetyl γ-cyclodextrin were tested as possible hydrophobic carriers to prolong the release of hydrophilic teicoplanin (TCP). Physical–chemical characterization of individual components, drug-carrier physical mixtures at 0.5, 0.67 and 0.75 mass fraction of carrier, and the respective interaction products by kneading or evaporative crystallization under microwave irradiation was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In vitro drug release in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer at 37 °C was determined by intrinsic dissolution rate (IDR) measurements on non disintegrating compressed discs. Solid-state interactions of TCP with triacetyl α-cyclodextrin by evaporative crystallization and kneading and with triacetyl β-cyclodextrin by evaporative crystallization (probably resulting in carrier amorphization) were demonstrated. The role of carrier hydrophobicity, carrier mass fraction and preparation method of solid drug-carrier combinations on solid-state drug-carrier interactions and slowing down of TCP release was assessed. Modulation of drug release can be achieved using TCP-triacetyl γ-cyclodextrin combinations at 0.5 mass fraction of carrier.     

Spectrophotometric titration of mercury(II) with ethylenedithiodiacetic acid

Summary Mercuric ions may be determined by titration with ethylenedithiodiacetic acid at a wavelength of 260 nm at any pH less than 1. The method is simple, rapid, and selective, and is applicable in solutions of high electrolyte concentration. Mercury(II) can be determined down to 1.5×10^–5 M with a relative standard deviation less than 2%.

Zusammenfassung Quecksilber (II) läßt sich mit Äthylendithiodiessigsäure bei 260 nm und pH1 titrieren. Das Verfahren ist einfach, rasch und selektiv. Es läßt sich auch für Lösungen mit hoher Elektrolytkonzentration anwenden. Hg(II)-Konzentrationen über 1,5×10^–5 M sind mit einer relativen Standardabweichung unter 2% bestimmbar.

     

Development of a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay for urinary 1-hydroxypyrene

A chemiluminescent enzyme-immunoassay for urinary 1-hydroxypyrene has been developed and optimized. The enzymatic activity of horseradish peroxidase-labeled tracer was measured with an enhanced chemiluminescent system and the results were compared with those from conventional colorimetric detection. The method fulfilled all the requirements of accuracy and precision and the detection limit was 0.001 pmol/well, which enabled analysis in less than 1 microL urine. Subjects working in the center of Bologna who were exposed daily to vehicular exhaust gas were studied. Their urinary 1-hydroxypyrene concentrations were compared with the levels of benzo( a)pyrene in air particulate matter. Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene, which ranged from 0.5 to 10 nmol L(-1), correlated poorly with the concentration of benzo( a)pyrene in air particulate matter, which ranged from 5 to 140 ng m(-3). No significant effect of vehicle exhaust gas exposure was observed among the different groups of subjects working in different areas of the town. Thus, at a relatively low level of exposure 1-hydroxypyrene does not seem to be a sensitive biomarker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.     

Production of octadienal in the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum

[reaction: see text] Marine diatoms produce alpha,beta,gamma,delta-unsaturated aldehydes that have detrimental effects on the reproduction of their natural predators. The production of these defensive metabolites is suggested to involve enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this paper, feeding experiments with labeled precursor provide clear evidence in support of the origin of octadienals 1 and 2 from 6,9,12-hexadecatrienoic acid (5), thus proving the involvement of novel lipoxygenase/lyase activity for the oxidation of C(16) fatty acids.     

Design and development of cyclohexane-based P,N-ligands for transition metal catalysis

[reaction: see text] A new class of cyclohexane-based P,N-ligands is readily obtained through aziridine ring opening with suitable phosphorus nucleophiles under acidic conditions. trans-1-Amino-2-diphenylphosphinocyclohexane is resolved with tartaric acid to give the final product in >99% ee. The new ligands show high stability toward oxidation at the phosphorus atom.     

High-pressure dissociation of crystalline para-diiodobenzene: optical experiments and Car-Parrinello calculations

We have investigated the high-pressure properties of the molecular crystal para-diiodobenzene, by combining optical absorption, reflectance, and Raman experiments with Car-Parrinello simulations. The optical absorption edge exhibits a large red shift from 4 eV at ambient conditions to about 2 eV near 30 GPa. Reflectance measurements up to 80 GPa indicate a redistribution of oscillator strength toward the near-infrared. The calculations, which describe correctly the two known molecular crystal phases at ambient pressure, predict a nonmolecular metallic phase, stable at high pressure. This high-density phase is characterized by an extended three-dimensional network, in which chemically bound iodine atoms form layers connected by hydrocarbon bridges. Experimentally, Raman spectra of samples recovered after compression show vibrational modes of elemental solid iodine. This result points to a pressure-induced molecular dissociation process which leads to the formation of domains of iodine and disordered carbon.
