The Casimir energy of the gravitational field in Kaluza-Klein theories is investigated. The mathematical techniques needed to compute the contribution of a single graviton loop to the quantum effective potential on a background manifold of (Minkowski space) ? (N-sphere) are developed. In these computations the cosmological constant plays a dynamical role, acting like a mass for the graviton. The numerical work for the case N = 1 is done explicitly, and a solution to the one-loop corrected equations of motion is found, although it is not stable. The possibility of an imaginary part to the effective potential for N > 1 is noted, and its existence is attributed to tachyonic terms in the mode sum.  相似文献

The preparation and interconversion of the following clusters bridged by bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylphosphine (dpmp) are reported: [Rh3(μ-dpmp)2(CO)aXb][BPh4]; X = I, a = 2, 3, 4, b = 2; X = I, a = 3, 2, 1, b = 4; X = I, a = 1, b = 6. Structure-activity relationships of enzymes can now be analyzed for the first time by the systematic alteration of protein structure. Recent developments in the chemical synthesis of DNA fragments and recombinant DNA technology enable the facile modification of proteins by highly specific mutagenesis of their genes. Kinetic analysis of the mutant enzymes combined with high-resolution structural data from protein X-ray crystallography allow direct measurements on the relationships between structure and function. In particular, the strength and nature of enzyme-substrate interactions and their detailed roles in catalysis and specificity can now be studied. We have developed such analysis of enzyme structure-function by site-directed mutagenesis of the tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase from Bacillus stearothermophilus, concentrating so far on the subtle role of hydrogen bonding in both substrate specificity and catalysis. We find that the energetics of tyrosine and ATP binding must be analyzed in terms of an exchange reaction with solvent water. Based on this idea and structural data, we have engineered an enzyme of improved enzyme-substrate affinity, and there thus appear to be real prospects of engineering proteins of new specificities, activities, and structural properties. We are also using protein engineering to gather direct information on the nature of enzyme catalysis. For example, we find the catalysis of formation of Tyr-AMP from Tyr and ATP is due largely to electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions that are stronger in the transition state than in the ground state—a “strain” mechanism rather than acid-base or covalent catalysis.  相似文献

Abstract— An iminum salt of octaethylbenzochlorin with copper in the aromatic ring, CDSI, was tested for its tumoricidal effects on theA–27 N-[4-(5-notro-2-furyl)-2-thiazoly] formamide tumor line. CDSI was found to be an effective photosensitiz4r in vivo when used in combination with either a xenon arc lamp or a pulsed alexandrite laser. Hemodynamically, CDSI and light caused a rapid decrease in tumor blood flow. skin photosensitization was found to be minimal when drug-injected mice werwe illuminated in a solar simulator.  相似文献

Let E = {X1, X2…, Xm} where the Xi ? V for 1 ≤ im are distinct. The hypergraph G = (V, E) is said to be s-uniform if |X1| = s for 1 ≤ im. A set of edges M = {Xi : i ? I } is a perfect matching if (i) ij ? I implies XiXi = 0, and (ii) ∪i?I Xi = V. In this article we consider the question of whether a random s-uniform hypergraph contains a perfect matching. Let s ≥ 3 be fixed and m/n4/3 → ∞. We show that an s-uniform hypergraph with m edges chosen uniformly from [74] contains a perfect matching with high probability. This improves an earlier result of Schmidt and Shamir who showed that m/n3/2 → ∞ suffices. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Let N be an observable Cox process on a locally compact space E directed by an unobservable random measure M. Techniques are presented for estimation of M, using the observations of N to calculate conditional expectations of the form E [M]|FA], where FA is the σ–algebra generated by the restriction of N to A. We introduce a random measure whose distribution depends on NA, from which we obtain both exact estimates and a recursive method for updating them as further observations become available. Application is made to the specific cases of estimation of an unknown, random scalar multiplier of a known measure, of a symmetrically distributed directing measure M and of a Markov–directed Cox process on R. By means of a Poisson cluster representation, the results are extended to treat the situation where N is conditionally additive and infinitely divisible given M.  相似文献

Iron(III) (3 × 10?4-5 × 10?4 M) is determined in a flow-injection system by passage through a Jones reductor mini-column before spectrophotometric detection with 1,10-phenathroline in citrate buffer, pH 5.0. The mid-range precision is < 1.4%, at a sampling rate of 60 h?1. Iron(II) and total iron are determined by splitting the injected sample so that a portion passes through the reductor column and a delay coil before both streams are recombined with the unreduced portion preceding the remainder of the sample to mix with the reagent for spectrophotometric detection. Two peaks are produced for each sample, the first being measure of iron(II), the second of total iron.  相似文献

A flow-injection system for glucose determination is described. Glucose oxidase is immobilized on controlled porosity glass (CPG) and used in a glass column (2.5 mm diameter × 2.5 cm). The hydrogen peroxide produced by the enzymatic reaction (? 1 × 10?6 M) is detected by the current produced in a flow-through cell, with two platinum electrodes having a potential difference of 0.6 V. Glucose (0–20 mmol l?1) can be determined in blood plasma either with a dialyser in the system or, better, by incorporating a column of copper(II) diethyldithiocarbamate on CPG before the enzyme column. The results compared well with those obtained by a conventional analyser system. The glucose oxidase column showed little change in activity over a 10-month period.  相似文献
