The first encapsulation of hydroxynitrile lyase from Hevea brasiliensis in a sol-gel matrix

A straightforward process for the encapsulation of HbHNL under low methanol conditions has been developed. By adding a sol, prepared by hydrolysis of TMOS/MTMS at pH 2.8 with continuous removal of methanol, to a stirred solution of the enzyme in a buffer at pH 6.5, at least 65% of the activity of the free enzyme could be recovered after the encapsulation. The aquagels were successfully used in the synthesis of (S)-cyanohydrins.     

Global solution to a phase transition model based on a microforce balance

Our aim in this article is to prove the existence and the uniqueness of a global solution to a nonisothermal Ginzburg-Landau (Allen-Cahn) system. This system is obtained by considering, in addition to the fundamental laws of thermodynamics, a balance law for internal microforces proposed by M. Gurtin.     

Double-thresholded estimator of extreme value index

The purpose of this Note is to propose an estimator of the extreme value index constructed by using only the number of points exceeding random thresholds. We prove the weak consistency and the asymptotic normality of this estimator. We deduce from this last result that the rate of convergence of our estimator is in a power of the sample size. To our knowledge, this rate of convergence is not reached by any other estimate of the extreme value index. Through a simulation, we compare our estimator to the moment estimator (Dekkers et al., Ann. Statist. 17 (1989) 1833–1855). To cite this article: L. Gardes, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. A Law of Large Numbers for the Zeroes of Heine–Stieltjes Polynomials

We determine the limiting density of the zeroes of Heine–Stieltjes polynomials (or of any set of points satisfying the conclusion of Heine–Stieltjes Theorem) in the thermodynamic limit and use this to prove a strong law of large numbers for the zeroes.     

Block copolymers of acrylic acid and butyl acrylate prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization: Synthesis,characterization, and use in emulsion polymerization

Amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(acrylic acid‐b‐butyl acrylate) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in a one‐pot reaction. These copolymers were characterized by NMR, static and dynamic light scattering, tensiometry, and size exclusion chromatography. The aggregation characteristics of the copolymers corresponded to those theoretically predicted for a star micelle. In a butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate emulsion polymerization, low amounts of these copolymers could stabilize latices with solid contents up to 50%. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents a method to estimate reflected and transmitted wave amplitude spectra in a bounded domain such as a wave tank, when available data signals must be shortened due to interferences and wall effects. This paper extends the well known Goda and Suzuki two-probe method to three probes. The paper also suggests solutions to compute reliable transmission and reflection coefficients in spite of problems linked to higher harmonics and to the interference between different wave trains propagating in the tank. A Wilson group of non-uniformly exponential growth

This Note constructs a finitely generated group W whose word-growth is exponential, but for which the infimum of the growth rates over all finite generating sets is 1 – in other words, of non-uniformly exponential growth.This answers a question by Mikhael Gromov (Structures métriques pour les variétés riemanniennes, in: J. Lafontaine, P. Pansu (Eds.), CEDIC, Paris, 1981).The construction also yields a group of intermediate growth V that locally resembles W in that (by changing the generating set of W) there are isomorphic balls of arbitrarily large radius in V and W's Cayley graphs.
