Global solution to a phase transition model based on a microforce balance

Our aim in this article is to prove the existence and the uniqueness of a global solution to a nonisothermal Ginzburg-Landau (Allen-Cahn) system. This system is obtained by considering, in addition to the fundamental laws of thermodynamics, a balance law for internal microforces proposed by M. Gurtin.     

A Law of Large Numbers for the Zeroes of Heine–Stieltjes Polynomials

We determine the limiting density of the zeroes of Heine–Stieltjes polynomials (or of any set of points satisfying the conclusion of Heine–Stieltjes Theorem) in the thermodynamic limit and use this to prove a strong law of large numbers for the zeroes.     

Block copolymers of acrylic acid and butyl acrylate prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization: Synthesis,characterization, and use in emulsion polymerization

Amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(acrylic acid‐b‐butyl acrylate) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization in a one‐pot reaction. These copolymers were characterized by NMR, static and dynamic light scattering, tensiometry, and size exclusion chromatography. The aggregation characteristics of the copolymers corresponded to those theoretically predicted for a star micelle. In a butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate emulsion polymerization, low amounts of these copolymers could stabilize latices with solid contents up to 50%. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents a method to estimate reflected and transmitted wave amplitude spectra in a bounded domain such as a wave tank, when available data signals must be shortened due to interferences and wall effects. This paper extends the well known Goda and Suzuki two-probe method to three probes. The paper also suggests solutions to compute reliable transmission and reflection coefficients in spite of problems linked to higher harmonics and to the interference between different wave trains propagating in the tank. Three new porphyrins bearing in the meso positions 4-(pyrazol-1-yl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl substituents have been prepared and characterized by nmr spectroscopy.     

Gelfand numbers of operators with values in a Hilbert space

In the paper we prove two inequalities involving Gelfand numbers of operators with values in a Hilbert space. The first inequality is a Rademacher version of the main result in [Pa-To-1] which relates the Gelfand numbers of an operator from a Banach spaceX intol ₂ ⁿ with a certain Rademacher average for the dual operator. The second inequality states that the Gelfand numbers of an operatoru froml ₁ ^N into a Hilbert space satisfy the inequality
