High-performance optical code generation and recognition by use of a 511-chip, 640-Gchip/s phase-shifted superstructured fiber Bragg grating

The generation and recognition of a record-length 511-chip optical code is experimentally demonstrated by use of a superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) with a chip rate of 640 Gchips/s. Very high reflectivity (92%) is achieved with high-quality correlation properties. The temperature deviation tolerance is approximately +/- 0.3 degrees C, which is within the package's temperature stability range (+/- 0.1 degrees C). Experimental results show good agreement with the theory. They indicate the SSFBG's potential for processing a long optical code with an ultrahigh chip rate, which could significantly improve the system's performance.     

Partial autocorrelation functions of the fractional ARIMA processes with negative degree of differencing

Let be a fractional ARIMA(p,d,q) process with partial autocorrelation function α(·). In this paper, we prove that if d∈(−1/2,0) then |α(n)|∼|d|/n as n→∞. This extends the previous result for the case 0<d<1/2.     

Controllable photoinduced optical attenuation in a single-mode optical fiber by irradiation of a femtosecond pulse laser

Novel optical attenuation fibers were fabricated by the irradiation of a focused infrared femtosecond pulsed laser onto the core of a silica glass single-mode optical fiber. Optical attenuation at a wavelength of 1.55 microm proportionally increased with increasing numbers of irradiation points and was controllable under laser irradiation conditions. The single-mode property of the waveguide and the mode-field diameter of the optical fiber were maintained after irradiation of the femtosecond laser. It is suggested that the attenuation results from optical scattering at photoinduced spots formed inside the fiber core.     

Efficient transport of saccharides through a liquid membrane mediated by a cyclodextrin dimer

A new efficient system for transporting saccharides through a liquid membrane has been constructed. The transport rates of saccharides were accelerated greatly by the cyclodextrin dimer 2; by contrast, the corresponding cyclodextrin monomer 1 was not effective at mediating saccharide transport. The transport rate of D-ribose through a chloroform liquid membrane was 17 times faster when the cyclodextrin dimer 2 was used as the transporter than when the cyclodextrin monomer 1 was used. Similarly the transport rate of methyl D-galactopyranoside was 16 times faster by 2 than by 1.     

Remarks on Herz-Type Hardy Spaces

Basic properties of the Herz-type Hardy spaces , such as the boundedness of singular integral operators and the fractional integration operators, atomic decomposition, dense subspaces, etc., are established in the full range 0 < q < ∞. Oxidation of Dimethyl Sulfide in Air Using Electron-Beam Irradiation,and Enhancement of its Oxidation Via an MnO<Subscript>2</Subscript> Catalyst

The decomposition of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) at initial concentrations of 4.5–18.0 ppmv in air was studied under electron-beam (EB) irradiation. Doses to decompose 90% of input DMS were 2.5 kGy for 4.5 ppmv, 3.4 kGy for 10.6 ppmv, and 3.9 kGy for 18.0 ppmv. HCOOH, (CH₃)₂SO, and trace CH₃OH and (CH₃)₂SO₂ were produced as irradiation products in addition to CO₂ and CO. Application of an O₃ decomposition catalyst to an irradiated sample gas led to an enhancement in the oxidation of DMS and its products into CO₂ and the decomposition of O₃. For 10.6 ppmv DMS/air, the mineralization ratio increased from 41% via only EB irradiation to 100% via the combination treatment at 6.3 kGy. The yield of CO₂ to CO_x increased from 5.3 to 87.6% by combination with catalytic oxidation. This combination treatment enables the irradiation energy used to deodorize gas streams containing DMS to be reduced.
