Observation of D+(s)K- and evidence for D+(s)pi- final states in neutral B decays

We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B(0)-->D(+)(s)K- is found in a sample of 85 x 10(6) BB; events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction B(B(0)-->D(+)(s)K-)=(4.6(+1.2)(-1.1)+/-1.3) x 10(-5). We also obtain evidence for the B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-) decay with branching fraction B(B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-))=(2.4(+1.0)(-0.8)+/-0.7) x 10(-5). This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |V(ub)|.     

S-wave baryons in an equally mixed scalar-vector square root potential model of independent quarks

A relativistic model of independent quarks based on Dirac equation with an equally mixed scalar-vector square root confining potential is used to compute the quark core contributions to the static properties like magnetic moments, charge radii and axial vector coupling constant ratios of the baryon octet. The results obtained with appropriate corrections due to centre-of-mass motion agree fairly well with experimental values. The model is also extended to the study of magnetic moments of the quark core of baryons in the charmed andb-flavoured sectors and the overall predictions so obtained compare well with other model predictions.     

Coherent potential approximation for a disordered diatomic linear chain having diagonal and off-diagonal randomness

A coherent potential approximation (cpa) for a mixed diatomic linear chain including both mass and force constant changes has been developed. In this case an impurity atom substituted at a particular site in one of the sublattices couples with two nearest neighbour atoms in the other sublattices. The diatomic linear chain is therefore considered as a tetratomic linear chain, the size of the unit cell being twice the original. Thecpa density of states and the dielectric susceptibility have been calculated. The numerical values of the later have been calculated in theata (averaget-matrix approximation) limit. Comparison of these results with the experimental and other computer calculations show a qualitative agreement.     

A note on ratio and product type estimators

Summary The use of ratio and product estimators for the mean of a finite population is well known. This paper proposes transformed estimators obtained through parametric linear combination of the ratio, or product, and the usual unbiased estimator of the mean for any sample design. To the first degree of approximation, the proposed estimators have smaller mean square error than that of the ratio, product and the usual unbiased estimator, for suitable choice of the parameter. The superiority of the proposed estimators over others for small samples has been studied empirically.     

Reaction of hexachloropropene with hydroxy-coumarins and chromones

The reaction of hexachloropropene with hydroxy-coumarins and chromones has been utilized to synthesise dichloro-benzodipyrandiones. The structures of the latter have been deduced from their spectral-analytical data. The reaction with 4-hydroxy-coumarin derivatives affords dichloropyrano-benzpyrandiones.     

Observation of radiative B-->phi K gamma decays

The radiative decay B-->phi K gamma is observed for the first time. The branching fraction for the charged B--->phi K- gamma decay mode is measured to be B(B--->phi K- gamma)=(3.4+/-0.9+/-0.4)x10(-6). The photon energy distribution for the B--->phi K- gamma decay is presented. The signal for the neutral B(0)-->phi K(0)gamma decay mode is not statistically significant and an upper limit, B(B(0)-->phi K(0)gamma)<8.3x10(-6) at 90% C.L., is set. The analysis is based on a data set of 90 fb(-1) collected by the Belle experiment at the e(+)e(-) asymmetric collider KEKB.     

Measurement of branching fractions for B-->eta(c)K(*) decays

We report measurements of branching fractions for charged and neutral B-->eta(c)K decays where the eta(c) meson is reconstructed in the K(0)(S)K+/-pi(-/+), K+K-pi(0), K(*0)K-pi(+), and pp; decay channels. The neutral B0 channel is a CP eigenstate and can be used to measure the CP violation parameter sin(2phi(1). We also report the first observation of the B0-->eta(c)K(*0) mode. The results are based on an analysis of 29.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB.     

Measurement of B(0)(d)-B_(0)(d) mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the upsilon(4S)

We report a determination of the B(0)(d)-&B_(0)(d) mixing parameter Deltam(d) based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Deltam(d) as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Deltam(d) = 0.463+/-0.008 (stat)+/-0.016 (syst) ps(-1). This is the first determination of Deltam(d) from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.     

Observation of large CP violation in the neutral B meson system

We present a measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) based on a 29.1 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed as a J/psi K(S), psi(2S)K(S), chi(c1)K(S), eta(c)K(S), J/psi K(L), or J/psi K(*0) decay and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we determine sin2 phi(1) = 0.99+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.06(syst). We conclude that we have observed CP violation in the neutral B meson system.     

Phonon frequency shift and effect of correlation on the electron-phonon interaction in heavy fermion systems

The electron-phonon interaction in the periodic Anderson model (PAM) is considered. The PAM incorporates the effect of onsite Coulomb interaction (U) between f-electrons. The influence of Coulomb correlation U on the phonon response of the system is studied by evaluating the phonon spectral function for various parameters of the model. The numerical evaluation of the spectral function is carried out in the long wavelength limit at finite temperatures keeping only linear terms in U. The observed behaviour is found to agree well with the general features obtained experimentally for some heavy fermion (HF) systems.
