Exchange interaction effects on the optical properties of LuMnO3

We have measured the optical conductivity of single crystal LuMnO3 from 10 to 45000 cm(-1) at temperatures between 4 and 300 K. A symmetry allowed on-site Mn d-d transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blueshift ( approximately 0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in the temperature dependence of the quasistatic dielectric constant epsilon(0) below T(N) approximately 90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions.     

Enantiospecific synthesis of carbapentostatins

In this paper we describe enantioselective syntheses of (+)-carbapentostatin (8) and its cyclopentyl analogue 12b. A new and efficient one-pot, two-step preparation of aldehyde 15 has been developed, based on the borane reduction of N-Pf-protected L-aspartic acid gamma-methyl ester (13) and Swern oxidation of the resulting alcohol. Homologation to diester 18 and ring formation by Dieckman cyclization, followed by reduction and dehydration steps, afford the 4-amino-1-cyclopentenemethanol derivative 22. Hydroboration and oxidation transform this compound stereospecifically into aminocyclopentanol 26, the key aminocyclitol component for an asymmetric synthesis of (+)-carbapentostatin.     

Electrochemically deposited photoactive CdIn2Se4 thin films: Structural and optical studies

Electrochemical synthesis of photoactive cadmium-indium-selenide (CdIn₂Se₄) thin films at ambient temperature was reported. The nanocrystalline nature and 1:2:4 elemental chemical stoichiometric ratio for Cd, In and Se were obtained from the X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis, respectively. Irregular shaped islands of about 400-500 nm in sizes composed of large number of small (∼30-40 nm) spherical grains were confirmed from the atomic force microscopy and the scanning electron microscopy images. The photoelectrochemical measurement of CdIn₂Se₄ film electrode in presence of 1 M polysulphide electrolyte revealed 0.42% photoelectrochemical device conversion efficiency, under the light illumination intensity of 80 mW/cm².     

1.6 μm band double pass fiber Raman amplifiers using Raman fiber oscillator

We propose double pass fiber Raman amplifier schemes based on Raman fiber oscillator in order to amplify optical signal with wavelengths from 1610 to 1650 nm efficiently. We experimentally demonstrate that the proposed double pass amplifier scheme has enhanced gain characteristics compared to a conventional single pass scheme. We also demonstrate a scheme for the proposed double pass amplifier to have small gain variation over the wavelength range by using two fiber Bragg gratings with different center wavelengths.     

A novel infrared absorbing structure for uncooled infrared detector

In this paper, we proposed a novel infrared absorbing structure for uncooled infrared detectors. The infrared absorber makes use of a quarter-wavelength structure composed of a dielectric layer, a protecting layer, an active layer, a supporting layer and a reflecting layer. Sputtered amorphous silicon is used as a dielectric layer because of its high refractive index. We fabricated the uncooled microbolometer with the proposed infrared absorbing structure by surface micromachining method. Then we characterized various bolometric properties such as thermal conductance, thermal time constant, responsivity and infrared absorptance. The fabricated bolometer showed the thermal conductance of 6.72 × 10⁻⁷ W/K, the thermal mass of 4.43 × 10⁻⁹ J/K, the thermal time constant of 6.6 ms and the responsivity of 7.76 × 10³ V/W at 10 Hz chopper frequency and 9.22 μA bias current. From the results, the estimated absorptance is about 80%. We expect that the proposed absorbing structure shows high infrared absorption and high performance of uncooled microbolometer.     

Crucial role of three-center hydrogen bonding in a challenging chiral molecular recognition

The enantio-discrimination of beta-chiral primary ammonium ions is achieved by a rational approach that utilizes three-center (bifurcated) hydrogen bonding. The extraction experiments on various selected guests reveal that the bifurcated H-bonding plays a crucial role for the chiral discrimination. The X-ray data obtained for an inclusion complex substantiate such interactions. Using the bifurcated H-bonding, the chiral molecular recognition with our C(3)-symmetric tripodal oxazoline receptors is extended generally toward ammonium ions of alpha-, beta-, and alpha,beta-chiral amines. Simple molecular models, evoking the bifurcated H-bonding, explain the chiral discrimination modes.     

Response of line focus acoustic microscope to specimen containing a subsurface crack

A numerical model is presented to calculate V(z) and V(x, z) curves for a line focus acoustic microscope and a specimen containing a subsurface crack. In this model, a Gaussian beam which is tracked through the lens into the coupling fluid and into the specimen, interacts with the crack. The numerical approach is based on the solution of singular integral equations by the boundary element method. The system of singular integral equations follows from the conditions at the interface of the coupling fluid and the specimen and on the faces of the crack. An electromechanical reciprocity relation is used to express the voltage at the terminals of the microscope's transducer in terms of the calculated incident and back-scattered fields. V(z) and V(x, z) curves are presented for various locations and orientations of the crack. The characteristic features of the V(z) and particularly the V(x, z) curves, as they relate to crack configuration, are discussed in some detail.     

Analysis of G/D/1 Queueing Systems with Inputs Satisfying Large Deviation Principle under Weak* Topology

The large deviation principle (LDP) which has been effectively used in queueing analysis is the sample path LDP, the LDP in a function space endowed with the uniform topology. Chang [5] has shown that in the discrete-time G/D/1 queueing system under the FIFO discipline, the departure process satisfies the sample path LDP if so does the arrival process. In this paper, we consider arrival processes satisfying the LDP in a space of measures endowed with the weak^* topology (Lynch and Sethuraman [12]) which holds under a weaker condition. It is shown that in the queueing system mentioned above, the departure processes still satisfies the sample path LDP. Our result thus covers arrival processes which can be ruled out in the work of Chang [5]. The result is then applied to obtain the exponential decay rate of the queue length probability in an intree network as was obtained by Chang [5], who considered the arrival process satisfying the sample path LDP.
