The standard model on non-commutative space-time

We consider the standard model on a non-commutative space and expand the action in the non-commutativity parameter . No new particles are introduced; the structure group is . We derive the leading order action. At zeroth order the action coincides with the ordinary standard model. At leading order in we find new vertices which are absent in the standard model on commutative space-time. The most striking features are couplings between quarks, gluons and electroweak bosons and many new vertices in the charged and neutral currents. We find that parity is violated in non-commutative QCD. The Higgs mechanism can be applied. QED is not deformed in the minimal version of the NCSM to the order considered. Current correlators to all orders in the quark masses

The contributions to the coefficient functions of the quark and the mixed quark-gluon condensate to mesonic correlators are calculated for the first time to all orders in the quark masses, and to lowest order in the strong coupling constant. Existing results on the coefficient functions of the unit operator and the gluon condensate are reviewed. The proper factorization of short- and long-distance contributions in the operator product expansion is discussed in detail. It is found that to accomplish this task rigorously the operator product expansion has to be performed in terms ofnon-normal-ordered condensates. The resulting coefficient functions are improved with the help of the renormalization group. The scale invariant combination of dimension 5 operators, including mixing with the mass operator, which is needed for the renormalization group improvement, is calculated in the leading order.Supported by the German Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technologie, under the contract 06 TM 761

Sigma Models and Minimal Surfaces

Correspondence is established between sigma models, minimal surfaces and the Monge–Ampére equation. The Lax pairs of the minimality condition of the minimal surfaces and the Monge–Ampére equations are given. Existence of infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws is shown and some Bäcklund transformations are also given.     

Extraordinary optical transmission through metal-coated colloidal monolayers

Extraordinary optical transmission through metal-coated close-packed monolayers has been observed. The monolayers consist of silica (a-SiO₂) or polystyrene microspheres that form two-dimensional close-packed lattices by self-assembly. Metal layers of Ag, Au and Ni with different thicknesses (larger than the skin depth) were evaporated onto such lattices by means of standard techniques. The optical transmission spectra investigated between 300 and 2500 nm show pronounced peaks that scale with the diameter and the optical properties of the composite slabs. The enhanced transmission observed is most likely mediated via plasmons. PACS 78.66.-w; 81.16.Dn; 82.70.Dd

Norms on unitizations of banach algebras revisited

Let A be an algebra without unit. If ∥ ∥ is a complete regular norm on A it is known that among the regular extensions of ∥ ∥ to the unitization of A there exists a minimal (operator extension) and maximal (ℓ₁-extension) which are known to be equivalent. We shall show that the best upper bound for the ratio of these two extensions is exactly 3. This improves the results represented by A. K. Gaur and Z. V. Kovářík and later by T. W. Palmer. The Transport Properties of the Cell Membrane Ion Channels in Electric Fields: Bethe Lattice Treatment

The interactive two-state model of cell membrane ion channels in an electric field is formulated on the Bethe lattice by means of the exact recursion relations. The probability of channel opening or maximum fractions of open potassium and sodium channels are obtained by solving a non-linear algebraic equation. Using known parameters for the conventional mean-field theory the model gives a good agreement with the experiment both at low and high trans-membrane potential values. For intermediate voltages, the numerical results imply that collective effects are introduced by trans-membrane voltage.     

Application of N,N‐bis(diphenylphosphino)aniline palladium(II) complexes as pre‐catalysts in Heck coupling reactions

Palladium(II) complexes with N,N‐bis(diphenylphosphino)aniline ligands catalyse the Heck reaction between styrene and aryl bromides, affording stilbenes in good yield.
