The utilization of cellulose to its full potential is constrained by its recalcitrance to dissolution resulting from the rigidity of polymeric chains, high crystallinity, high molecular weight, and extensive intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding network. Therefore, pretreatment of cellulose is usually considered as a step that can help facilitate its dissolution. We investigated the use of microwave oxygen plasma as a pre-treatment strategy to enhance the dissolution of cotton fibers in aqueous NaOH/Urea solution, which is considered to be a greener solvent system compared to others. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Powder X-ray Diffraction analyses revealed that plasma pretreatment of cotton cellulose leads to physicochemical changes of cotton fibers. Pretreatment of cotton cellulose with oxygen plasma for 20 and 40 min resulted in the reduction of the molecular weight of cellulose by 36% and 60% and crystallinity by 16% and 25%, respectively. This reduction in molecular weight and crystallinity led to a 34% and 68% increase in the dissolution of 1% (w/v) cotton cellulose in NaOH/Urea solvent system. Thus, treating cotton cellulose with microwave oxygen plasma alters its physicochemical properties and enhanced its dissolution.  相似文献

Oils and fats derived from animals and plants provide a good renewable source for polymer precursors. In this investigation, fatty acids derived from plant oils and diols were used as monomers to produce polyesters by melt polycondensation. Sebacic acid, hexanediol, and hydroquinone were used as precursors in the polymer synthesis. The polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, three-bending point flexural test, X-ray diffraction, tensile testing, and contact angle. The resulting polyesters were blended with epoxies to create materials with an increased elongation at break without affecting other mechanical properties.  相似文献

Synthetic dyes have become an integral part of many industries such as textiles, tannin and even food and pharmaceuticals. Industrial dye effluents from various dye utilizing industries are considered harmful to the environment and human health due to their intense color, toxicity and carcinogenic nature. To mitigate environmental and public health related issues, different techniques of dye remediation have been widely investigated. However, efficient and cost-effective methods of dye removal have not been fully established yet. This paper highlights and presents a review of recent literature on the utilization of the most widely available biopolymers, specifically, cellulose, chitin and chitosan-based products for dye removal. The focus has been limited to the three most widely explored technologies: adsorption, advanced oxidation processes and membrane filtration. Due to their high efficiency in dye removal coupled with environmental benignity, scalability, low cost and non-toxicity, biopolymer-based dye removal technologies have the potential to become sustainable alternatives for the remediation of industrial dye effluents as well as contaminated water bodies.  相似文献

The synthesis of new unsaturated N-sulfonylcarbamates by the addition of unsaturated alcohols to aroxy(alkoxy)sulfonylisocyanates is reported. The reaction is carried out at room temperature in the presence or absence of solvent, depending on the nature of the starting alcohol. A three step synthesis of various thiobarbiturate derivatives 17-24 was established. The first step is mediated by Mn(OAc)?, in order to generate a carbon-carbon bond between a terminal alkene and malonate. Derivatives 1-8 were obtained in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. This key step allows synthesis of a wide variety of lipophilic thiobarbiturates, which could be tested for their anticonvulsive or anesthesic potential.  相似文献

Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra (Red Cabbage) dye is composed mainly of natural pigment called anthocyanins used as a natural colourant. Wool and silk fibres were dyed with the aqueous extract obtained from red cabbage. The dyeing process was investigated and the combined effects of dyeing conditions on the colour yield parameter (K/S) were studied. Resulted fastness to wash, rubbing and light of the dyed fabrics were evaluated. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) of the residual effluent were measured. Best dyeing conditions were found to be: 50 g/100 mL, pH 2, 60 min and 100 °C, respectively, for the red cabbage weight, pH, dyeing duration and temperature. Good fastnesses properties were found in both cases: for wool and silk fabrics. It was found also that the calculated biodegradability ratio (COD/BOD5) of the residual bath of dyeing wool and silk with red cabbage extract are lower than 1.5 which means that these baths are biodegradable.  相似文献

-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols (methyl-substituted tocols) and 5,7-dimethyltocol were separated by normal-phase HPLC on β- or γ-cyclodextrin-bonded silica (CDS) with fluorescence detection. The HPLC behavior of the tocol components was studied under various mobile phase conditions. Hexane or cyclohexane was used in combination with oxygen-containing solvents (alcohol, ether, and esters) in binary and ternary mobile phases. Capacity factors (k′) and separation factors () for adjacent tocol components were determined. Incorporation of non-polar ethers in the hydrocarbon (hexane or cyclohexane) mobile phases favored the separation of β- and γ-tocopherols with improved values, which enabled trace analysis of the β-isomer present in soybean oil. Analyte solutes tended to be more strongly adsorbed in mobile phases containing branched-chain alcohols and ethers than in those containing the corresponding straight-chain solvents. Generally, the k′ values obtained with hexane mobile phases or with the β-CDS phase were greater than those observed in HPLC with cyclohexane mobile phases or with the γ-CDS phase.  相似文献

This research work involves the dyeing of acrylic fabric with natural dye extracted from date pits powders using Soxhlet extraction process. The effect of dye bath pH, salt concentration, dyeing time and temperature were studied. The optimal dyeing conditions where pH 4, 0 g/L salt, 60 min, and 80 °C. The COD and the BOD5 of the residual dye bath were measured and it was shown from the registered values that the residual dye bath presents an acceptable rate of organic discharge.  相似文献

The isolation of chitin utilizing ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate has been determined to result in polymer contaminated with proteins. For the first time, the proteins in chitin extracted with ionic liquid have been quantified; the protein content was found to vary from 1.3 to 1.9% of the total weight. These proteins were identified and include allergenic proteins such as tropomyosin. In order to avoid ‘traditional’ hydroxide-based deproteinization of chitin, which could reduce the molecular weight of the final product, alternative deproteinization strategies were attempted. Testing of the previously reported deproteinization method using aqueous K3PO4 resulted in protein reduction by factors varying from 2 to 10, but resulted in significant phosphate salt contamination of the final product. Contrarily, the incorporation of GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) compound Polysorbate 80 into the polymer washing step provided the polymer of comparable purity with no contaminants. This study presents new options for the deproteinization of chitin that can replace traditional approaches with methods that are environmentally friendly and can produce high purity polymer.  相似文献
