Influence of hydrodynamic conditions of the solution on the sensitivity of stripping analysis of trace metals

Possibilities to increase the sensitivity of stripping analysis by optimising the hydrodynamic conditions of the solution during the deposition and rest period are evaluated. Rotation rates as high as 13 000 rpm can be applied during the deposition step at a mercury film rotating disc electrode for Zn, Cd, Pb, In and Tl determinations when 10-20 mg/l of Hg(2+) for the renewal of the mercury film is added. Because of the extreme sensitivity on the properties of the mercury film in the case of Ga only 4000-5000 rpm are recommended. The highest stirring efficiencies using a magnetic stirrer are equivalent to 2500-3000 rpm when a rotating disc electrode is used. The effect of the duration of the rest period is not significant for square wave stripping voltammetry, however, analytical signals can be increased 10 and more times when potentiometric stripping analysis is applied.     

Inhibition activity of ethyleneglycol and its oligomers on tin electrode

Voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were applied to investigate the inhibition activity of ethyleneglycol and its oligomers on tin electrode in strong acidic sulfate solutions. Tetraethyleneglycol was found to be the most active substance among compounds HO–(CH₂–CH₂–O) _m –H (m≤4) that retards diffusion-controlled Sn(II) reduction due to its inhibitive adsorption. This rather slow process is controlled both by diffusion and electrosorption steps. A comparison of exchange current densities obtained in the presence of different polyethers shows that the length of the hydrocarbon chain is the main factor responsible for inhibition activity of such substances on tin electrode.     

Grignard-type reactions with transition metals: alkylation of carbon compounds in protic solvents

Allylic halides react with reduced cobalt or nickel halides and with carbonyl compounds according to a pattern analogous to that of a Grignard reaction but with the difference that protic solvents can be used.     

Silicone glue based solid phase microextraction fiber for amino acid determination

A solid phase microextraction fiber based on high temperature silicone glue coated on a stainless steel wire is presented for use in the extraction of amino acid derivatives. Amino acids were derivatizad using ethyl chloroformate. Effects of the extraction and desorption parameters including extraction and desorption time, desorption temperature and ionic strength on the extraction/desorption efficiency have been studied and quality parameters of the method were measured. A possibility to apply the proposed method for the identification of proteinaceous binders was demonstrated.

Mesomorphic Properties of New 5-Alkyl-2-Pyrimidinols Esters

Abstract

A synthesis of a number of 5-alkyl-2-pyrimidinol esters was conducted, their mesomorphic properties were examined. Two ring esters of said pyrimidinols are nonmesomorphic, while three ring esters are typical mesogens, forming nematic either nematic-smectic mesophases.     

Probing the influence of an allylic methyl group in zearalenone analogues on binding to Hsp90

By the replacement of an acetate with propionate by means of organic synthesis, a range of zearalenone analogues were prepared that feature an allylic methyl group. For the synthesis of the aliphatic region of the analogues, we used an asymmetric alkylation to yield pentenol derivatives 16 and ent‐ 16 . By means of hydroboration the corresponding aldehydes were secured. These were coupled with 2‐pentynol derivate 23 by means of a Carreira acetylide addition. Further routine steps led to the sulfones 29 and 45 , respectively. After merging them with 2‐bromobenzaldehyde 9 in a Julia–Kocienski reaction, metalation, carboxylation, and protecting‐group manipulations gave the seco acids 35 and 49 . By means of lactonization under Mitsunobu (alcohol activation) or Trost–Kita conditions (carboxyl activation), all four possible macrocyclic ketone stereoisomers were accessible. In all, considering various protecting‐group decorations, 16 analogues were obtained and tested for cytotoxicity (L929 mouse fibroblast cell line). Whereas most of the analogues were less active than zearalenone (IC₅₀=9.4 μM ), the resorcinol derivatives were comparable, with one stereoisomer ( 40 b ) being slightly more active (IC₅₀=6.6 μM ). These results were also reflected in the binding assays to Hsp90 in which 40 b showed a dissociation constant (K_d) value of 130 nM .     

Synthesis of phosphorylated calix[4]arene derivatives for the design of solid phases immobilising uranyl cations

With the aim of developing supports for uranyl cations immobilisation, new 1,3-alternate calix[4]arenes bearing both phosphonic acid functions as chelating sites and N-succinimide-4-oxabutyrate as the anchoring arm were synthesised in good yields. The coupling of such calixarenes to a gel was performed and a successful immobilisation of uranyl cations was obtained.     

On the Gerber-Shiu discounted penalty function for subexponential claims

We obtain the asymptotics of the Gerber-Shiu discounted penalty function in the classical Lundberg model. We cosider claims from a class of subexponential distributions and find the asymptotics as the initial surplus x tends to infinity. The main term of the discounted penalty function ψ(x, δ) has different expressions in the cases where the interest rate δ > 0 and where δ = 0. A sequent calculus for logic of knowledge and past time: Completeness and decidability

We consider logic of knowledge and past time. This logic involves the discrete-time linear temporal operators next, until, weak yesterday, and since. In addition, it contains an indexed set of unary modal operators agent i knows.We consider the semantic constraint of the unique initial states for this logic. For the logic, we present a sequent calculus with a restricted cut rule. We prove the soundness and completeness of the sequent calculus presented. We prove the decidability of provability in the considered calculus as well. So, this calculus can be used as a basis for automated theorem proving. The proof method for the completeness can be used to construct complete sequent calculi with a restricted cut rule for this logic with other semantical constraints as well.
