Synthesis and tautomeric structure of 2-[N-aryl-2-oxo-2-arylethanehydrazonoyl]-6-methyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinones

Two series of 2-(N-aryl-2-oxo-2-arylethanehydrazonoyl)-6-methyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinones 11 (12) were prepared by coupling of diazotized anilines with 2-(aroylmethylene)-1,2-dihydro-6-methyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinones 2 (3). The spectral data of such compounds together with their 3-methyl analogs 13 (14) indicated that they exist predominantly in the hydrazone tautomeric form.     

Reaction of Pyrimidinonethione Derivatives: Synthesis of N‐Methyl‐2‐Hydrizinopyrimidine‐4‐One,Thiazolo[3,4‐b] N‐Methylpyrimidinone; 2‐(1‐Pyrazolonyl) N‐Methylpyrimidine‐4‐one and 2‐Hydrazino‐N‐Methyl Pyrimidine‐4‐One Derivatives

6‐Aryl‐5‐cyano‐4‐pyrimidinone‐2‐thion derivatives 1a‐c reacted with methyl iodide (1:2) to give the corresponding 2‐S,N‐dimethyl pyrimidine‐4‐one derivatives 2a‐c . Compounds 2a‐c were in turn, reacted with hydrazine hydrate to give the sulfur free reaction products 3a‐c . These reaction products were taken as the starting materials for the synthesis of several new heterocyclic derivatives. Reaction of 3a‐c with acetic anhydride and formic acid gave pyrimido triazines 4a‐c and 7a‐c , respectively. Their reactions with active methylene containing reagents gave the corresponding 2‐(1‐pyrazonyl)‐N‐methyl pyrimidine derivatives 9a‐c and 10a‐c , respectively. Their reactions with aromatic aldehydes afforded the corresponding 2‐hydrazono pyrimidine derivatives 11a‐c . The structure of these reactions products were established based on both elemental analysis and spectral data studies.     

Hyperfine structure studies of Tantalum

A narrow bandwidth ring dye laser pumped by an argon ion laser has been used to investigate the hyperfine structure of the even and odd parity levels of tantalum by optogalvanic spectroscopy in the wavelength range 5640 to 6050 Å. Seventeen transitions have been observed and eight of these have not been reported in the literature so far. These transitions involve 27 levels with 15 odd and 12 even parity configurations. The magnetic dipole hyperfine interaction constants A and the electric quadrupole interaction constants B for these levels have been computed and compared with the data available in literature. The results for the levels at 34799.71 cm^?1, 26960.46 cm^?1 and 19657.78 cm^?1 are reported for the first time.

Solvent extraction of lanthanum(III), europium(III) and lutetium(III) with fluorinated 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolones into chloroform

A series of chelating reagents, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-(2-fluorobenzoyl)-5-pyrazolone, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-(3-fluorobenzoyl)-5-pyrazolone and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-(4-fluorobenzoyl)-5-pyrazolone, has been synthesized. The extraction of Ln(III), (Ln = La, Eu and Lu) into chloroform with these reagents at 30 +/- 1 degrees has been studied. The composition of the complexes extracted has been determined by the slope method, and the extraction constants K(ex), were measured. The presence of the fluorine atom in the reagents does not make the K(ex), values much different from those obtained with the parent pyrazolone.     

Glycol-based sol-gel process for the fabrication of ferroelectric PZT thin films

A new sol-gel system using ethylene glycol was developed for the fabrication of PZT thin films with compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary Pb(Zr_0.52Ti_0.48)O₃. Ethylene glycol was used as both a chelating agent and a solvent to replace the highly toxic methoxyethanol used in previous formulations. Thin films were deposited by spin coating the solutions onto platinized silicon substrates. Films were completely crystallized by about 600°C and contained the ferroelectric perovskite phase. A dielectric constant of about 750–800 at 1 KHz was obtained for thin films of 0.3 µm thickness. The hysteresis measurements revealed a remanent polarization of 15 mC/cm² with a coercive field of 60 kV/cm.     

Synthesis and Reactions of Some New Heterocyclic Compounds Containing Cycloalka[e]thieno[2,3‐b]pyridine Moiety

Hydrolysis of ethyl 3-amino-4-aryl-cycloalka[e]thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxylates ( 3a-d) gave the corresponding o-aminocarboxylic acids 4a-d . Heating the latter compounds ( 4a-d) with acetic anhydride furnished the oxazinone derivatives 5a-d which, in turn, underwent recyclization reaction to give the corresponding pyrimidinones 6a-d upon treatment with ammonium acetate in acetic acid. Reaction of 3-amino-4-aryl-cycloalka[e]thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamides ( 3f,h ) with triethyl orthoformate gave pyrimidinone derivatives 7a,b . Reaction of 3-amino-4-phenyl-cycloalka[e]thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamides 3e,h with aromatic aldehydes furnished tetrahydropyridothienopyrimidinones 8a-d . Chlorination of 7a,b and 6a-d by using phosphorous oxychloride produced 4-chlorocycloalka[5′,6′]pyrido[3′,2′:4,5]thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine derivatives 9a-f which were used as key intermediates in the synthesis of several new cycloalkapyrido-thienopyrimidines 10a-f ˜ 14a-f . Moreover, some cycloalkapyridothienotriazinones 15a,b-17a,b were synthesized.     

Calculated electronic spectra of model ferric cytochrome P450 complexes

Restricted open-shell ground state properties and electronic spectra of two closely related low-spin, ferric, 6-coordinate, model cytochrome P450 complexes, one with a methyl mercaptide and the other a mercaptan as the second axial ligands, have been calculated with a newly modified, semiempirical INDO-SCF-CI method. The sensitivity of the calculated spectra to protonation of the sixth axial ligand, and the ability of the method to predict characteristic spectral features for the complexes investigated, are determined. Assignment of transitions, including xy- and z-polarized transitions, are made and compared with experimental observations where available. In particular, the origin of the anomalous split Soret spectrum observed in low-spin ferric complexes with mercaptide but not a mercaptan is investigated. Finally, a two part hypothesis is presented which provides a general explanation for the origin of both the observed split Soret and the red-shifted normal Soret in various ferrous and ferric P450 complexes in terms of the ground state orbital characters and simple symmetry considerations.     

Kinetics and electrochemical studies on superoxide

Rate constants for the reaction of superoxide O^- ₂ with various substrates were obtained through stationary electrode polarography theory and technique. In solvent acetonitrile, the substrate and the rate constants of the reaction O^- ₂ + AH^{- k2}Product, are, AH = isopropanol (k₂ < 0.01 M^-1 s^-1); ethanol (k₂ = 1.42 × 10² M^-1 s^-1); methanol (k₂ = 1.1 × 10⁷ M^-1 s^-1), H₂O (k₂ = 1.0 × 10⁵ M^-1 s^-1). In MeCN, O^-2 was found to be rather unreactive towards glucose and acetone but it reacts with fructose and sucrose catalytically. However, in DMF2, O^- ₂reacts with glucose and fructose with k2 order of 105 M-1 s-1. The mechanism of the reaction of O^- ₂ with the substrates (AH) is proposed as O^- ₃ + AH k₂O, AH^k2 _k-1 k [O₂H + AH]^-, _k-2O₂H + A^- with k₁ = 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and k^-1 = 10⁸ -10⁹ s^-1. With these values of k_-1 and k₁, k k₂(obs). The reversible E_1/2 for O₂ + e O^- ₂ in various solvents: MeCN, acetone, isopropanol, methanol, H₂O were obtained either directly from the reversible voltammogram or from experimental voltammograms and the rate constants obtained (as above) using stationary electrode polargraphy theory; E_1/2 being -0.82 (MeCN),-0.85 (acetone),-0.72 (isopropanol);-0.66 (MeOH),-0.56 (H2O) vs SCE.
