Reaction of 1,2-diaminoimidazoles with isatins. Degree of orderliness of compounds in a liquid-crystal matrix as a criterion of their structure

The reaction of 1,2-diamino-4-arylimidazoles with isatin and N-methylisatin, as a result of which the corresponding imidazo[1,2:2,3]-1,2,4-triazino[6,5-b]indoles were obtained, was studied. The corresponding Schiff base was also isolated in the case of the reaction of 1,2-diamino-4-(p-tert-butylphenylene)imidazole with N-methylisatin. The electronic and IR spectra of the synthesized compounds were studied. The possibility of the use of the degree of orderliness of the synthesized compounds in a liquid-crystal matrix as an additional spectral method in proving the structures of the compounds is demonstrated.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 2, pp. 242–245, February, 1982.

Features of determination of thickness of dielectric films obtained in searching experiments

The approach to determination of the thickness and the refractive indices of dielectric films obtained in searching experiments is discussed. Experiments of this kind often exhibit unpredictable values of thickness and refractive indices of films. Nondestructive noncontact methods of spectrophotometry and ellipsometry not involving preliminary preparation of samples are applied. The approach to determination of the thickness and the refractive indices of films is illustrated by means of samples of silicon carbonitride films obtained on silicon substrates by plasma-chemical decomposition of gas-phase trimethyl(phenylamino)silane.     

Causal loop diagrams as a de-escalation technique

Escalation of commitment, the tendency of decision makers to keep on investing in losing courses of action, has been shown to be a costly decision bias that affects many areas of decision making. Even though escalation is a widely studied phenomenon, there has been comparatively little research on how to avoid this bias. The present study focuses on de-escalation of commitment and proposes that causal loop diagrams (CLDs) can help to decrease escalating commitment to a failing course of action. By means of an experiment, this study shows that using a CLD decreases escalation tendencies.     

Terahertz spectroscopy of quantum-well narrow-bandgap HgTe/CdTe-based heterostructures

The energy spectra of quantum-well narrow-bandgap Hg_{1 ? y} Cd _y Te/Cd _x Hg_{1 ? x} Te heterostructures have been studied. The dependences of the effective cyclotron mass on the density (in classical magnetic fields) and the transition energy (in quantizing fields) have been obtained from the cyclotron resonance measurements. These dependences confirm the near-linear dispersion law for the electrons with small mass at the band bottom (the minimum cyclotron mass measured is 0.003 m ₀). The interband photoconductivity of the CdHgTe-based structures with the long-wavelength photoresponse edge lower than 6 meV has been demonstrated.
