Ion-exchange separation of metal ions with thiosulphate

Summary In a cationic column of Amberlite IR-120 with thiosulphate as the eluting agent it has been possible to separate metal ions from several two to five component mixtures.

Estimation of silica

5,6-Benzoquinaldine and 8-hydroxyquinaldine have been used as organic bases for the quantitative precipitation of silica as silicomolybdic salts of the bases under suitable conditions of acidity. The salts, being stable and non-hygroscopic, may be directly weighed after drying at 110–150° C or alternatively may be ignited at 550° C with free access of air to silicomolybdic anhydride.     

Effective magnetic moments of a Heisenberg linear chaing

The effective magnetic moments of a linear chain of up to 12 spin-1/2 particles interacting through the isotropic Heisenberg coupling are computed exactly over the entire temperature range of interest.     

Boundary effects on the soliton mass in (1+1)-dimensional supersymmetric theories

A proper incorporation of boundary effects, in terms of a surface term contribution to the one-loop soliton mass in (1+1)-dimensional supersymmetric theories, is shown to resolve the problem of renormalizability in the soliton sector, which otherwise arises in a finite space calculation of the soliton mass using a modified version of a set of boundary conditions proposed by Rouhani. The saturation of the Witten-Olive bound for such boundary conditions follows immediately.     

Supersymmetric regulators and supercurrent anomalies

The supercurrent anomalies of the supercurrent $\text{S}$_μ of the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in Wess-Zumino gauge are computed using the supersymmetric dimensional regulator of Siegel. It is shown that $\text{γ}{}_{\mathrm{\mu }}\text{S}{}^{\mathrm{\mu }}\text{=0}$ and $\text{?}{}_{\mathrm{\mu }}\text{S}{}^{\mathrm{\mu }}\text{≠0}$ in agreement with an earlier calculation based on the Adler-Rosenberg method. The problem of exhibiting the chiral anomaly and a regulator for local supersymmetry suggests that the interpretation of dimensional reduction in component language is incomplete.     

Nonlinear distribution function for a plasma obeying Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations

The nonlinear distribution function of Allis, generalised to include the transverse electromagnetic waves in a plasma, is used to set up the coupled wave equations for the longitudinal and the transverse modes. These are solved, keeping terms up to the cubic order of nonlinearity, by using the method of multiple scales. The equations of wave modulation are derived, which are solved to discuss the nature of the modulational instability and solitary wave propagation. It is found that the solutions so obtained satisfy conditions which are very similar to the well known Lighthill criterion for stability, appropriately modified due to the coupling of the two modes. The role of the average constant current due to any flow of the resonant and trapped electrons in determining the stability, is also discussed.
