High oxygen pressures and the stabilization of six-coordinated Ir(VI) in an oxygen lattice

Abstract

During these last twenty five years a great efforts have been made in the Laboratoire de Chimie du Solide du CNRS in order to develop high oxygen pressure for the stabilization of unusual oxidation state of transition elements.

The aims of such research works was to correlate the increase of the Mⁿ⁺-O bond covalency versus the increase of the oxidation state n+ to the physicochemical properties of resulting oxides [1].

Iridium was an interesting element due to its position (5d) in the Periodic Table. In 1980 Ir(V) (d⁴) was stabilized in La₂LiIrO₆ in the perovskite structure [2]. Such a study had underlined the strong value of the spin-orbit coupling associated to Ir(V) [3].

The stabilization of Ir(VI) is interesting from two points of view : (i) its isotropic electronic configuration (d³), (ii) such a high oxidation state could lead to the strongest M-O bond in an oxygen lattice.

Selecting, through a specific methodology, the most appropriate local structural and chemical factors and with the help of high oxygen pressure, Ir(V1) was stabilized in the perovskite Ba₂CaIrO₆. Structural, magnetic and Mössbauer studies have been carried out in order to characterize the physicochemical properties induced by this unusual oxidation state.     

Multiple solutions of boundary value problems: an elementary approach via the shooting method

In this paper we derive the existence of multiple solutions for boundary value problems of the type $$u\prime \prime + f\left( {t,u} \right) = 0,u\left( 0 \right) = 0,u\left( \pi \right) = 0$$ , in terms of the behaviour of the ratiof(t,u)/u nearu=0 and near infinity. The nonlinear termf is assumed to be locally Lipschitz inu, so that the shooting method can be used. (AMS Subject Classification: 34B15).     

Current Reversal Due to Coupling Between Asymmetrical Driving Force and Ratchet Potential

Transport of a Brownian particle moving in a periodic potential is investigated in the presence of an asymmetric unbiased external force. The asymmetry of the external force and the asymmetry of the potential are the two ways of inducing a net current. It is found that the competition of the spatial asymmetry of potential with the temporal asymmetry of the external force leads to the phenomena like current reversal. The competition between the two opposite driving factors is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for current reversals.     

Understanding Symmetric and Asymmetric DNA Patterns by Water Flow on a Solid Surface

In order to use DNA for making molecular device, specific DNA patterns on a solid surface should be constructed. In this paper, we will show that the random interactions between the DNA segments and the solid surface play an important role in the final symmetric and asymmetric DNA patterns obtained by water flow.     

Observation of an excited charm baryon Omega c* decaying to Omega c0gamma

We report the first observation of an excited singly charmed baryon Omega c* (css) in the radiative decay Omega c0gamma, where the Omega c0 baryon is reconstructed in the decays to the final states Omega(-)pi+, Omega(-)pi+pi0, Omega(-)pi+pi(-)pi+, and Xi(-)K(-)pi+pi+. This analysis is performed using a data set of 230.7 fb(-1) collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The mass difference between the Omega c* and the Omega c0 baryons is measured to be 70.8+/-1.0(stat)+/-1.1(syst) MeV/c2. We also measure the ratio of inclusive production cross sections of Omega c* and Omega c0 in e+e(-) annihilation.     

Measurement of the branching fraction and photon energy moments of B-->Xs gamma and A(CP)(B --> X(s+d gamma))

The photon spectrum in B-->Xs gamma decay, where Xs is any strange hadronic state, is studied using a data sample of 88.5 x 10(6) e+ e- --> Upsilon(4S) --> BB decays collected by the BABAR experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The partial branching fraction, DeltaB(B --> Xs gamma) = (3.67+/-0.29(stat)+/-0.34(syst)+/-0.29(model)) x 10(-4), the first moment = 2.288+/-0.025+/-0.017+/-0.015 GeV, and the second moment E2(gamma) = 0.0328+/-0.0040+/-0.0023+/-0.0036 GeV2 are measured for the photon energy range 1.9 GeV < E gamma < 2.7 GeV. They are also measured for narrower E gamma ranges. The moments are then fit to recent theoretical calculations to extract the heavy quark expansion parameters m(b) and mu2(pi) and to extrapolate the partial branching fraction to E gamma > 1.6 GeV. In addition, the direct CP asymmetry A(CP)(B-->X(s+d gamma) is measured to be -0.110+/-0.115(stat)+/-0.017(syst).
