Symmetries and conservation laws of partial differential equations: Basic notions and results

The main notions and results which are necessary for finding higher symmetries and conservation laws for general systems of partial differential equations are given. These constitute the starting point for the subsequent papers of this volume. Some problems are also discussed.     

On the Limiting Steady Configurations of a Model Plasma

A model equation describing the configuration of a simple plasma maintained by external radiation is studied. A branch of steady solutions of the equation was found by Eckhaus et al. to terminate at a finite critical value of the power of the external source, and this is attributed to the discontinuous nature of a nonlinear term in the governing equation. On introducing a small parameter to render the term continuous, a second branch of solutions is constructed in a neighborhood of the termination point of the original branch. This suggests that the termination point is formed as the limit of a subcritical fold in the surface of the steady solution branch.     

Scattering of solitons for the Schrödinger equation coupled to a particle

We establish soliton-like asymptotics for finite energy solutions to the Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonrelativistic classical particle. Any solution with initial state close to the solitary manifold converges to a sum of a travelling wave and an outgoing free wave. The convergence holds in global energy norm. The proof uses spectral theory and the symplectic projection onto the solitary manifold in the Hilbert phase space.     

Schmidt analysis of pure-state entanglement

We examine the application of Schmidt mode analysis to pure-state entanglement. Several examples permitting exact analytic calculation of Schmidt eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are included, as well as evaluation of the associated degree of entanglement.     

On the variational representation of solutions to some quasilinear equations and systems of hyperbolic type on the basis of potential theory

We demonstrate a method that permits to obtain generalized solutions for some quasilinear equations and systems of hyperbolic type. The corresponding variational principle is constructed using the theory of equilibrium of a potential in an external field. Dedicated to the memory of B. M.
