Novel acrylic macromonomer with amphiphilic character derived from Triton X‐100: Radical copolymerization with methyl methacrylate and thermal properties

This article explores the synthesis of a novel methacrylic macromonomer with an amphiphilic character derived from poly(ethylene glycol) tert‐octylphenyl ether (MT) and its respective homopolymer. To know their reactivity in radical copolymerization reactions with methyl methacrylate (MMA), a model monomer (MTm) was synthesized to determine the reactivity ratios and compare them with the low molar fractions of copolymers of MT with MMA because they were difficult to isolate. They were r_MTm = 0.97 and r_MMA = 0.95. The compositional diagrams when representing the weight fraction of MT and MTm in the feed and the copolymer suggested that a clear correlation exists between the experimental points of the model monomer MTm and the macromonomer MT ones, suggesting that the length of the side poly(ethylene oxide) chain does not affect the reactivity of the methacrylic double bond in the prepared monomers for this type of polymerization reaction. The reactivity ratios of the copolymers have a tendency for the formation of random or Bernoullian copolymers. The glass‐transition temperatures (T_g's) of the prepared copolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, deviated from the Fox equation, and discussed on the basis of treatments that consider the influence of the monomeric units along the copolymer chains, determining the T_g of the corresponding alternating dyads. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1,1,3-Trimethyl-3-phenylindan as a Luminescent Additive to a Plastic Scintillator Based on Poly(methyl Methacrylate)

Synthesis of New Plant Growth Regulators,Isomeric 1-(Dimethyloctyl)- and 1-Alkylpiperidinium and -morpholinium Halides by Telomerization of Isoprene with Secondary Amines

The known plant growth regulator, Al'den [1-(3,7-dimethyloctyl)-1-allylpiperidinium bromide], and also 1-(3,7-dimethyloctyl)-1-methylpiperidinium iodide were synthesized by treatment with allyl bromide and methyl iodide, respectively, of exhaustively hydrogenated 1-nerylpiperidine which was obtained by anionic telomerization of isoprene with piperidine. Various quaternary ammonium salts having a terpene sub- stituent with unnatural dimethyloctane skeleton, which effectively stimulate florification of Aster Chinensis L., were prepared by the action of alkyl halides on telomerization products derived from isoprene and piperidine or morpholine in the presence of palladium complexes.     

Mass‐lumping or not mass‐lumping for eigenvalue problems

In this article we analyze the effect of mass‐lumping in the linear triangular finite element approximation of second‐order elliptic eigenvalue problems. We prove that the eigenvalue obtained by using mass‐lumping is always below the one obtained with exact integration. For singular eigenfunctions, as those arising in non convex polygons, we prove that the eigenvalue obtained with mass‐lumping is above the exact eigenvalue when the mesh size is small enough. So, we conclude that the use of mass‐lumping is convenient in the singular case. When the eigenfunction is smooth several numerical experiments suggest that the eigenvalue computed with mass‐lumping is below the exact one if the mesh is not too coarse. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effects of Polymer Bridging and Electrostatics on the Rheological Behavior of Aqueous Colloidal Dispersions†

Effects of a low molecular weight physically adsorbed polyethylene oxide (PEO) and the range of the electrostatic repulsion on the rheological behavior of silica dispersions (as a model system) has been investigated. Particular attention is given to the evolution of the rheological behavior with increasing the polymer concentration in the system and also effectiveness of the polymer as a dispersant under extreme conditions (high ionic strength). Results indicate that at small separation distances and low polymer coverage, the polymer chains are long enough to adsorb on the surface of two particles simultaneously causing bridging flocculation in the system and hence increasing the viscosity and linear viscoelastic functions of the dispersion. A significant increase was observed in the viscosity of the dispersion at salt concentrations high enough to eliminate electrostatics between the particles. Under these conditions,the viscosity of the system increased significantly when PEO was added to the dispersion showing that at high electrolyte concentrations, a neutral polymer such as PEO is not able to stabilize the system.     

Solving of second order nonlinear PDE problems by using artificial controls with controlled error

In this paper, we find the approximate solution of a second order nonlinear partial differential equation on a simple connected region inR ². We transfer this problem to a new problem of second order nonlinear partial differential equation on a rectangle. Then, we transformed the later one to an equivalent optimization problem. Then we consider the optimization problem as a distributed parameter system with artificial controls. Finally, by using the theory of measure, we obtain the approximate solution of the original problem. In this paper also the global error inL ₁ is controlled.     

On p-Extensions of Fields of Characteristic p

It is proved that a Galois extension of a field of characteristic p is completely determined by its Galois group and the endomorphism of the additive group of the group algebra that corresponds to the raising to the power p.
