Two- and three-dimensional analysis of bose-einstein correlations inπ +/K+p interactions at 250 GeV/c

The NA22 data onπ ^? π ^? correlations are analyzed in terms of a number of two- and three-dimensional parametrizations (Gaussian space-time, Goldhaber, Bowler string-like, Bertsch hydrodynamical, Kopylov-Podgoretskii, etc.). Contrary to the results obtained for e⁺e^? andµp collisions, the Goldhaber parametrization, as well as string-like models, fail in describing the hadron-hadron data. Better fits are obtained in the framework of surface-emitting fireball-like models, both when including and excluding hydrodynamical expansion of nuclear matter. Our results indicate that pion radiation occurs at earlier stages of matter evolution than in nuclear collisions.     

Spectral shift function and trace formula

The complete proofs of Krein’s theorem on the spectral shift function and the trace formula are given for a pair of self-adjoint operators such that either (i) their difference is trace-class or (ii) the difference of their resolvents is trace-class. The proofs, essentially due to Krein, is based on Herglotz’s theorem on the boundary value of the analytic functions whose imaginary part is non-negative on the upper half plane, and an almost optimal class of functions are obtained for which the trace formula is valid. Also an alternative method based on Weyl-von Neumann’s theorem for self-adjoint operators, avoiding the complex function theory and inspired by Voiculescu’s work, is given for the first case. Furthermore, some applications of the spectral shift function have been discussed.     

Lower branch of the spectrum of a fermion interacting with a bosonic gas (polaron)

The lower single-particle bound state of a fermion interacting with a bosonic gas is studied. In the case of a small coupling constant, the employed method makes it possible to improve significantly the accuracy of the previously known results on the polaron branch of the spectrum. Isomer effects on transport properties of polyesters based on bisphenol-A

Pure gas sorption and transport properties of polyesters based on bisphenol-A and both pure isophthalic and pure terephthalic acid chloride were obtained for He, N₂, O₂, CH₄, and CO₂ at 35°C. The polymers were synthesized in our laboratory and amorphous films were prepared with a specialized solvent casting procedure. The polymer containing m-phenylene groups shows higher permselectivity for most of the gas pairs. The ideal selectivity of O₂/N₂ was increased by 33% when p-phenylene units were replaced by m-phenylene ones. On the other hand, the polyester containing only p-phenylene groups, shows higher permeability to all the gases studied. The polymer based on pure terephthalic acid chloride has a 75% higher oxygen permeability and a 1.1-fold higher carbon dioxide permeability than the isophthalic acid derivative. The polyester containing meta-phenylene units has lower T_g, higher permselectivity, lower permeability, lower fractional free volume (FFV), and lower d-spacing. The values of FFV, and lower d-spacing. The values of FFV and d-spacing were only slightly different between the two isomers. Moreover, for the sub-T_gγ transition the maximum in tan δ occured at essentially the same temperature (?55°C). The polymer with a higher concentration of p-phenylene units shows somewhat larger area under the γ-peak, indicating slightly more sub-T_g motion. The Distribution of FFV is considered to be the determining factor for the differences in transport properties observed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

An estimate for the convergence rate of difference schemes for second-order elliptic equations in domains of arbitrary shape

Using the dummy-domains method, a difference scheme is constructed for solving the first boundary-value problem for elliptic equations of the second order in domains of arbitrary shape.
