Plasma lenses

An analysis is presented of the possibilites of focusing the microwave energy by means of a magnetoactive plasma. The basic parameters of a plasma lens are calculated, and the way a magnetoactive plasma may be used in the making of lenses with a variable focal length is pointed out.     

Identification of gas emanated from human skin: methane, ethylene, and ethane.

We investigated whether methane, ethylene and ethane gas can be detected in gas emanating from human skin, which is called skin gas. Skin gas was collected with a homemade stainless-steel trap system, which was cooled with liquid nitrogen, and analyzed with a gas chromatograph fitted with a flame ionization detector (FID). Skin-gas samples were obtained by covering a hand for 30 min with a polyfluorovinyl bag in which pure helium gas was introduced. The bag, the trap system and GC were set up online to avoid any contamination by air. Methane, ethylene and ethane in skin gas were successfully collected at an average amount emanated for 30 min (from ten subjects) of 150 +/- 63, 20 +/- 11 and 17 +/- 8 [mean +/- SD] pg/cm2, respectively.     

Localized orbitals,electric field gradients and diamagnetic shielding in hydrogen bonded systems

Ab-initio localized molecular orbitals are used to evaluate the diamagnetic shieldings and the electric field gradients in hydrogen bonded systems.     

On the possibility of the transformation of a soliton into the bound state of two excitons due to the exciton-photon interaction

This paper is concerned with the study of the probability of the soliton transformation, in the molecular chain, into the bound state of two excitons through the exciton-photon interaction.

It is established that this interaction, in general, is weak. In special cases, if the value of dynamical interaction becomes close to double the value of the resonant interaction between neighbouring molecules, the probability of the soliton transformation can be significant.     

The four-pion final state in pp annihilations at 5.7 GeV/c

577 events from $\text{p}\text{p}\text{→2π}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{2π}{}^{\mathrm{?}}$ annihilations at 5.7 GeV/c are analyzed. Single-particle spectra are studied and an effective matrix element in the form Π_i=1⁴ exp(?Bp_Ti²) is determined. The rates for production of ?° and f⁰ mesons are estimated and the influence of resonances on the angular distributions of pions and dipions is investigated. Transverse momenta correlations can be explained using peripheral phase space.     

The effect of LH wave on the peripheral plasma of TM-1-MH tokamak

The work is devoted to the study of the LH wave effect on the peripheral plasma of the TM-1-MH tokamak. The observed enhancement of the ion saturated current in the limiter shadow is interpreted as heating of the peripheral ions by absorption of decay waves generated in this region due to the nonlinear wave-plasma interaction.     

Spurious center-of-mass effect in the local density approximation

An additional spurious center-of-mass effect is caused by using the local density approximation for the density dependent effective interactions. The approximate correction term is suggested and its contribution for the light even-even nuclei is calculated. This contribution is found to be of about +9 MeV and its slight tendency to increase the size and to decrease the deformation of the nucleus is noted.
