Evaluation of the residual stability of polyurethane automotive coatings by DSC

Degradation of poly(ester-urethanes), poly(ether-urethanes) and poly(acrylic-urethanes), as a base for automotive paintings in interior applications, has been studied by DSC. The samples were clearcoat and black-pigmented paints, unstabilized and stabilized with HALS Tinuvin 292, UV absorber Tinuvin 1130 and antioxidant Hostanox O3, exposed to weathering in Xenotest and in Arizona desert. From the dependences of oxidation onset temperature on the heating rate, the kinetic parameters enabling to calculate the oxidation induction time for a chosen temperature have been obtained. From the values of oxidation induction time, the protection factors of the additives and the residual stability of the polymer after an ageing stress has been evaluated. It has been shown that the equivalence between the two methods of weathering depends on the polymer composition. A new criterion for the evaluation of synergism/antagonism of additives in the stabilizing mixture has been proposed.     

Gas chromatographic determination of alkali metal O,O-diethyl phosphorodithioate present in trace amounts

Summary A gas Chromatographic determination of traces of alkali metal O,O-diethyl phosphorodithioates is described. The salts were converted into a volatile derivative by alkylation with diazomethane. The product was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. With aqueous samples a linear relationship of peak height to amount of salt was obtained in the range 0.04–1 ng and for urine samples a calibration curve was constructed. The detection limit (signal to noise ratio 4/1) was 40 pg of salt. The procedure was successfully used for monitoring phosalone absorption by occupationally exposed persons.

Zusammenfassung Eine gaschromatographische Bestimmung von Spuren Alkalisalz des Diäthyldithiophosphorsäureesters wurde beschrieben. Die Salze wurden durch Alkylieren mit Diazomethan in ein flüchtiges Derivat übergeführt. Dessen Identifizierung erfolgte mittels eines gaschromatographisch-massenspektrometrischen Systems. In Wasserproben wurde ein lineares Verhältnis der Peakhöhen und der Salzmenge festgestellt und für Urinproben wurde eine Eichkurve ermittelt. Die Nachweisgrenze (Signal zu Rausch 41) wurde bei 40 pg Salz festgestellt. Die Methode wurde für die Kontrolle der Absorption von Phosalon bei beruflich exponierten Personen erfolgreich angewendet.

IR- und Raman-Spektren einiger Kaliumpentafluorometallate-monohydrate

The IR- and Raman Spectra of several compounds of the stoichiometryM ₂ ^I M ^IIIF₅H₂O and their deuterated analogs have been interpreted on the basis of their crystal structures. The compounds studied were divided into two classes regarding the bonding of water molecules. The main spectroscopic difference between the two classes was found in the region of H₂O vibrations in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The metal—fluorine and metal—oxygene vibrations gave no direct information concerning the two types of water.     

Heats of Mixing of Mixed Solvent Solutions of Alkali Metal Salts of Substituted Benzenesulfonic Acids

The enthalpy change on mixing solutions of methyl-substituted benzenesulfonic acids and their salts, with salts having a common cation or anion, at constant ionic strength in mixtures of 1,4-dioxane with water, were measured at 25°C. The heat effects of mixing solutions having a common anion increase almost linearly with the reciprocal value of the dielectric constant of the solvent. The heat effects of mixing solutions having a common cation, which are all negative in water-rich solutions, become endothermic after a certain value of the dielectric constant is passed. The results are discussed in terms of the solute-solvent structural properties. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Chronoamperometric stripping analysis following biocatalytic preconcentration

Electrodes containing glucose oxidase or xanthine oxidase adsorbed on modified glassy carbon electrodes or on conductive complexes, accumulate charge in the presence of substrates, the discharge of which gives the chronoamperometric stripping current. This current is 15 times higher than the stationary current after preconcentration for 8 min. A ten-fold increase in sensitivity of the determination of glucose or hypoxanthine is observed. The stripping current of electrodes based on cytochrome b₂ adsorbed on a graphite electrode is 25 times higher than the stationary current. The electrode is useful for lactate determinations for more than 7 days.

Influence of γ-radiation on the properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of poly (3-hexadecylthiophene) in interaction with selected environment-polluting gases

The influence of -radiation on the electric properties of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of partially iodine-doped poly-(3-hexadecylthiophene) and stearic acid in interaction with selected environment-polluting gases has been studied. CO₂, CO and NO₂ increase the LB films conductivity and NO has a tendency to decrease the electric conductivity. The influence of -radiation was expressive onyl in the case of CO₂, whereas NO₂ brought about degradation of the conductive polymer.
