The use of fluorescent X-rays for contact microradiography

The possibilities of using fluorescentK-radiation of the elements Fe, Ti and Ca for contact microradiography of thin, little absorbing samples were studied and a simple set-up for carrying out this method, which uses a common type of microstructural X-ray tube as a source of the exciting radiation, was proposed. The experiments performed showed that if large magnifications are not required secondary-excitedK-radiation of the above-mentioned elements can be advantageously used for contact microradiography without the exposure times becoming impracticably long.

     

The distribution of ions and their valencies in manganese ferrites II. Mn1+xFe2-xO4+y ferrites

The influence of the oxygen content on the saturation magnetic moment and the Curie temperature was studied experimentally on non-stoichiometric manganese ferrites having a varying excess of manganese. Taking into consideration the results of studying the electrical conductivity and magnetic relaxation effects, a model was elaborated for the distribution of ions in these ferrites, which starts out from the distribution of ions in stoichiometric manganese ferrite. The experimental results obtained by us and those of other authors confirm the justification of this model.

The local sensitivity of photo-multiplier photo-cathodes

The influence of the non-uniform distribution of the sensitivity of a photo-multiplier photo-cathode on the spectrum shape of the output pulses from a scintillation detector is studied. Methods of scanning the local sensitivity and determining its distribution function are described. The theory was compared qualitatively with measurement on a slow-neutron detector from a mixture of zinc sulphate and boric acid.

Influence of ageing on change in electrical properties of semiconducting systems of Bi₂Te₃-Bi₂Se₃

The paper describes the effect of ageing observed on a semiconducting system Bi₂Te₃ — Bi₂Se₃. It is shown that the change in electrical conductivity and thermoelectric force, which takes place during ageing, is caused by the change in concentration of the free electrons. The influence of this process on the efficiency of equipment employing the Peltier effect is analyzed.

     

The distribution of ions and their valencies in manganese ferrites I. MnFe2O4+γ ferrites

A model for the distribution of cations in the spinel lattice of manganese ferrites MnFe₂O₄₊ was elaborated on the basis of the experimental studies of the basic magnetic quantities, electrical conductivity and magnetic relaxation of the given ferrites, taking into consideration their crystallographic properties. The conclusions following from this model are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained by us and by other authors both for stoichiometric manganese ferrite and for a ferrite where 0.

The effective mass of electrons in the intrinsic region of InSb

The effective masses of electrons m _n /m _o in the intrinsic region are calculated on the basis of measurements of the temperature dependence of the total magnetic susceptibility and the Hall coefficient of single-crystal and polycrystalline specimens of n- and p-type InSb. It is shown that the effective masses m _n /m _o are constant in the range considered and their values for the various specimens are 3·43×10^–2 to 3·53×10^–2.
