Contingent epiderivatives and set-valued optimization

In this paper we introduce the concept of the contingent epiderivative for a set-valued map which modifies a notion introduced by Aubin [2] as upper contingent derivative. It is shown that this kind of a derivative has important properties and is one possible generalization of directional derivatives in the single-valued convex case. For optimization problems with a set-valued objective function optimality conditions based on the concept of the contingent epiderivative are proved which are necessary and sufficient under suitable assumptions.     

Electron screening in backward elastic scattering

Abstact: The elastic scattering cross sections, σ (E,θ), for the systems He+Ta and He+W have been measured at θ_lab=165° and E _lab=76.1 keV to 3.988 MeV using targets with a thickness of a few atomic layers. The results are smaller than the results given by the Rutherford scattering law, σ_R(E,θ), due to the effects of electron screening and can be described by σ(E,θ)/σ_R(E,θ)=(1+U_e/E)⁻¹, where U _e is an atomic screening potential energy. The deduced average value, U _e=28 ± 3 keV, is consistent with the Moliére- and Lenz-Jensen-models as well as electron binding energies. Received: 25 May 1998     

Low-energy fission investigated in reactions of 750 AMeV 238U-ions on 208Pb. II: Isotopic distributions

Projectile fission of 750 AMeV ²³⁸U-ions interacting with a Pb target was studied by means of the spectrometer FRS, GSI-Darmstadt. One of the two fission fragments was detected with a transmission of few percent and identified in mass and charge. Low-energy fission (E^* < 25 MeV) events were selected by their magnetic rigidity. Whereas the production of asymmetric fission events is dominated by the GDR excitation, very asymmetric fission and symmetric fission take place after a GQR or DGDR excitation or after a nuclear interaction. Cross sections of more than 250 isotopes were measured. Isotopic distributions of low-energy fission were reconstructed for elements from Se to Te. The fission modes SI, SII and SL were clearly shown in these distributions and in the mass and TKE distributions. Charge polarization and mass dispersion were deduced for each fission mode. Finally, the characteristics of the low-energy fission process explain the production rates of neutron-rich species. Received: 14 July 1997 / Revised version: 6 October 1997     

Magnetic order in LaEuSrCuO studied [2pt] by Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy

⁵⁷Fe M?ssbauer effect studies of La_1.65Eu_0.20Sr_0.15CuO₄ doped with 0.5 at% ⁵⁷Fe performed in the temperature region 300 K > T > 4.2 K give an onset temperature for magnetic ordering of K. This temperature practically is the same as that found in Nd doped La_2-xSr_xCuO₄. It indicates that the magnetic ordering temperature in the LTT phase of rare earth (RE) doped La_2-xSr_xCuO₄ is independent of the RE moment. The direction of the ⁵⁷Fe magnetic moment in the magnetically ordered state is within the CuO₂ plane, while it has been found to be parallel to the c-axis in Nd doped La_2-xSr_xCuO₄. Determination of the Tolman cone angle from crystallographic parameters and a statistical analysis using the crystallographic data base

Summary A new method of evaluating the Tolman cone angle from X-ray structural data available from the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Base has been developed and a statistical analysis of the cone angles of the phosphines PPh₃, PMe₂Ph, PMePh₂, PMe₃, PEt₃ and PCy₃ (Cy = cyclohexyl) in transition metal complexes has been completed.     

The radiative return at small angles: virtual corrections

Virtual corrections for electron-positron annihilation into one real and one off-shell photon of invariant mass are evaluated. Special attention is paid to those configurations where the real photon is collinear with the beam direction. This calculation is an important ingredient of a Monte Carlo program, which simulates events with tagged photons from initial-state radiation, including NLO corrections. On Matter and Metric in Affine Theory of Gravity

The affine theory was conceived as a geometric model, wherein the connection field is the primary structure of the space-time. According to the program lying on the basis of this theory, metric and some sort of matter are somehow to be deduced from the connection field. In the present paper, we point out classical ways to a realization of this program. It is shown that, even in that case where the introduction of the metric seems to exclude the coupling of gravity to matter, the situation is not so hopeless as one may assume. In particular, for a symmetric Einstein tensor, it is answered the old question as to a self-consistent introduction of a metric and a metrical energy-momentum tensor controversially debated by Einstein, Eddington, and Weyl.     

Testing Extreme Value Conditions

A test statistic is developed that checks the validity of the extreme value conditions without specifiying the shape parameter of the limiting extreme value distribution.     

Quark masses from regularized integrals of vector current spectral functions

We give estimates of quark masses from a comparison of two methods of regularizing the coefficient of the Schwinger term. The masses of the first radial excited states of ?, ω, and ? would have to be slightly higher than indicated by the new Orsay data for this method to yield real solutions for the masses of theu, d, ands quarks.
