Transmission laser welding of plastic is typically achieved by incorporating a laser absorbing dye into one of the two pieces of plastic one wishes to weld together and mediating the welding process using a laser emitting light at a suitable wavelength. Desirable properties of laser absorbing dyes include: (1) the dye is colorless in the visible region but absorbs strongly in the region at the wavelength where the laser emits, (2) the dye has a good conversion of the energy from the laser to heat, (3) the dye is stable enough to be incorporated into the molten plastic, (4) the dye is soluble in the plastic of choice to give an even distribution in the plastic, and (5) the dye is nontoxic. Here, we explore an alternative approach to achieve laser welding of colorless plastics using a laser dye that is colored, but that can be bleached after the welding process. Nonsymmetrical squaraine dyes were prepared by condensation of squaric acid and two equivalents of various 3,5-dimethoxy-N,N-dialkylanilines. After the incorporation into polyethylene and laser welding, the plastic was bleached either by heat treatment or by irradiation with a high pressure Xe-lamp giving colorless polyethylene. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compliance and enforcement in fisheries are important issues from an economic point of view since management measures are useless without a certain level of enforcement. These conclusions come from the well‐established theoretical literature on compliance and enforcement problems within fisheries and a common result is that, it is efficient to set fines as high as possible and monitoring as low as possible, when fines are costless and offenders are risk neutral. However, this result is sensitive to the assumption that fishermen cannot engage in avoidance activities, e.g., activities to reduce the likelihood of being detected when noncomplying. The paper presents a model of fisheries that allows the fishermen to engage in avoidance activities. The conclusions from the model are that, under certain circumstances, fines are costly transfers to society since they not only have a direct positive effect on the level of deterrence, but also an indirect negative effect in the form of increased avoidance activities to reduce the probability of detection. The paper contributes to the literature on avoidance activities by introducing the externality from the illegal behavior as an endogenous effect on other offenders. For an externality, that has an exogenous effect on other actors, Malik shows that fines are only costly transfers for conditional deterrence (when one actor is deterred while another actor is not). For fisheries, we show that fines are also costly transfers under no deterrence (when no agents are deterred).  相似文献

The uniform flow of a fluid with a narrow stratified layer past a horizontal circular cylinder is studied experimentally. This is done through a Galilean transformation of the problem to a situation where the cylinder moves, and the water is at rest. Measurements were made of the interfacial waves formed behind the cylinder towed horizontally at constant speeds. A specially designed stiff force measuring system with a resolution of 0.5 mN measured the drag and lift forces exerted upon the cylinder. When fluid buoyancy forces dominate, it is shown that the increased drag force and other pertinent properties of the problem are efficiently described in terms of a densimetric Froude number, and explicitly independent of the Reynolds number. Lee-waves were detected at all towing speeds less than the speed of long interfacial gravity waves. Maximum wave heights occurred at half of that speed. Vortex shedding was hampered for speeds less than 0.65 of the long interfacial wave speed. Recommended values of increased drag-coefficients are given. The importance of a finite thickness of the stratified layer is documented. The critical densimetric Froude number defining when stratification starts to be important becomes lower with increasing layer thickness. And, with the cylinder located in the stratified layer, the drag-force does not increase although internal waves of appreciable height develop. The situation modelled has its engineering counterpart in the flow past submerged tube bridges.The research presented here is based on parts of my doctoral work carried out during 1988–1990, partially supported by the Norwegian Road Research Laboratory.  相似文献

We study optimal stochastic control problems with jumps under model uncertainty. We rewrite such problems as stochastic differential games of forward–backward stochastic differential equations. We prove general stochastic maximum principles for such games, both in the zero-sum case (finding conditions for saddle points) and for the nonzero sum games (finding conditions for Nash equilibria). We then apply these results to study robust optimal portfolio-consumption problems with penalty. We establish a connection between market viability under model uncertainty and equivalent martingale measures. In the case with entropic penalty, we prove a general reduction theorem, stating that a optimal portfolio-consumption problem under model uncertainty can be reduced to a classical portfolio-consumption problem under model certainty, with a change in the utility function, and we relate this to risk sensitive control. In particular, this result shows that model uncertainty increases the Arrow–Pratt risk aversion index.  相似文献

Three laboratories (Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology [NTNU], Institut Français du Pétrole [IFP], and the Colorado School of Mines [CSM]) determined hydrate plug formation characteristics in three oils, each in three conditions: (1) in their natural state, (2) with asphaltenes removed, and (3) with naturally occurring acids removed from the oil. The objective was to determine the major variables that affect hydrate plugging tendencies in oil-dominated systems, to enable the flow assurance engineer to qualitatively assess the tendency of an oil to plug with hydrates. In the past, it was indicated that chemical effects, for example, water-in-oil/hydrate-in-oil (emulsion/dispersion) stability, prevented hydrate plugs. For example, deasphalted oils provided low emulsion/dispersion stability and thus hydrate particles aggregated. In contrast pH 14-extracted oils were reported to remove stabilizing naphthenic acids, causing asphaltene precipitation on water/hydrate droplets, stabilizing the emulsion/dispersion to prevent aggregation and pluggage. This work suggests that in addition to chemistry, shear can enable plug-free operation in the hydrate region. High shear can prevent hydrate particle aggregation, while low shear encourages particle aggregation and plugging. As a result, flow assurance engineers may be able to forecast hydrate plug liability of an oil by a combination of chemistry and flow variables, such as: a) measurements of live oil emulsion stability, b) predictions of flow line shear, and c) knowledge of water cut. Plug formation qualitative trends are provided for the above three variables. Implications for flow assurance are given.  相似文献

A systematic investigation has been performed to relate the effect of glycerol composition to the rheological properties of aqueous suspensions of hydrophilic fumed silica at pH far from the isoelectric point. Steady state/dynamic rheology and electrophoresis measurements are compared to correlate the stability of the suspension with particle-particle and particle-solvent interactions. Although the extent of electrostatic stability is reduced by addition of glycerol, the rheological properties show a transition from a highly flocculated gel to stable dispersions containing no microstructures. This is attributed to a high degree of hydrogen-bonding between glycerol and the Aerosil surface silanol groups. Small dissociation of NaCl and particles reduce the effect of ion exchange and particle bridging mechanisms when the suspensions destabilise in the presence of glycerol. The high viscosity of glycerol is important with respect to the formation of a thick solvation layer around the particles. These parameters give rise to short-range, non-DLVO repulsive solvation forces, which stabilise the dispersion. At intermediate concentrations of glycerol (30–60 wt%) the apparent viscosity increase abruptly and irreversibly as both the extent and time of shearing are increased. The shear rate for the onset of the shear thickening is found to be retarded by decreasing the particle and salt concentration as well as by increasing the glycerol concentration. It is postulated that at intermediate glycerol concentration, where the height of the energy barrier is small, mechanical forces can activate the particles to overcome the energy barrier to enter the region where attractive forces dominate. Here, domination of the hydrodynamic forces to the colloidal forces under the shear results in formation of irreversible gels which does not relax to its initial condition.  相似文献

A capillary electrophoresis inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method for separation of free cisplatin from liposome-encapsulated cisplatin and protein-bound cisplatin was developed. A liposomal formulation of cisplatin based on PEGylated liposomes was used as model drug formulation. The effect of human plasma matrix on the analysis of liposome-encapsulated cisplatin and intact cisplatin was studied. The presence of 1 % of dextran and 4 mM of sodium dodecyl sulfate in HEPES buffer was demonstrated to be effective in improving the separation of liposomes and cisplatin bound to proteins in plasma. A detection limit of 41 ng/mL of platinum and a precision of 2.1 % (for 10 μg/mL of cisplatin standard) were obtained. Simultaneous measurements of phosphorous and platinum allows the simultaneous monitoring of the liposomes, liposome-encapsulated cisplatin, free cisplatin and cisplatin bound to plasma constituents in plasma samples. It was demonstrated that this approach is suitable for studies of the stability of liposome formulations as leakage of active drug from the liposomes and subsequent binding to biomolecules in plasma can be monitored. This methodology has not been reported before and will improve characterization of liposomal drugs during drug development and in studies on kinetics.
