Water-soluble stilbene dendrimers

The third generation of novel photo-responsive water-soluble stilbene dendrimer (trans- and cis-G3 WSD) undergoes unusual one-way trans-to-cis isomerization to give 100% of cis isomer at the photostationary state on UV irradiation in water.     

Determination of some rare-earth elements by plasma-jet emission spectrometry

The effects of a magnetic field on spectral intensities in plasma-jet spectrometry were examined, and detection limits for rare-earth elements were calculated. Plasma-jet emission spectrometry was applied to the determination of lanthanum, yttrium and gadolinium in a monazite sample from which thorium had been separated. A standard addition method was used in order to improve accuracy, and the internal standard and background compensation method was applied to measurements of spectral line intensities to achieve good precision. The coefficient of variation was 1.51% for 50 μg La ml^?1.     

Unexpected formation of benziphthalocyanine dimer: An easily synthesizable dimer of phthalocyanine analogue

Methylene-bridged benziphthalocyanine dimer 2 was unexpectedly generated by the reaction of dihydroxybenziphthalocyanine 1 and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of a base at room temperature. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 2 revealed a V-shaped structure. Dimer 2 exhibited longer-wavelength absorption and fluorescence bands than monomer 1 in the near-IR region.     

Excited state intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer of phenylethynyl-substituted 2′-hydroxychalcones

(E)-1-[2-Hydroxy-4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]-3-[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]prop-2-en-1-one (1), (E)-1-[2-hydroxy-4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (2), and (E)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]prop-2-en-1-one (3), which belong to a new class of 2′-hydroxychalcones with phenylethynyl group(s) at the para position of the phenyl ring, were synthesized, and their photochemical properties were investigated. The lowest energy absorption band of 1 peaks at a longer wavelength (383 nm) with a much larger molar extinction coefficient (5.0 × 10⁴ M ^?1 cm^?1) than that of the parent 2′-hydroxychalcone (2′HC) (2.0 × 10⁴ M ^?1 cm^?1 at 318 nm). Upon photoexcitation, all three compounds underwent excited-state intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer (ESIHT) to produce an excited tautomer that emitted fluorescence with a large Stokes shift in the longer wavelength region at 600–700 nm. The quantum yield of the tautomer fluorescence of 1 was not high at 298 K (Φ _f = 9.1 × 10^?5), but was highest among 2′HC and its analogues. The Φ _f values of 1–3 increased 10–30 fold upon reducing the temperature from 298 to 77 K.     

Spectroscopic and theoretical studies of optically active porphyrin dimers: a system uninterpretable by exciton coupling theory.

The electronic excited states of a meso-meso beta-beta doubly linked bis-porphyrin are comprehensively investigated by measuring its circular dichroism (CD) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra. The observed spectroscopic properties are rationalized by DFT calculations. The frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) are constructed by the linear combinations of the constituent monomers' four MOs. Comparison of a theoretical CD spectrum based on time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) with the experimental spectra resulted in the assignment of the helical conformation of the dimer. This assignment is contrary to the previous assignment based on the point-dipole approximation (exciton coupling theory).     

1,3,5-tristyrylbenzene dendrimers: a novel model system to explore oxygen quenching in a highly organized environment

Control of the efficiency of photoisomerization by oxygen was demonstrated for 1,3,5-tristyrylbenzene dendrimers 1-3; the large dendrons do not significantly affect the photochemistry itself due to volume-conserving isomerization mechanisms but may affect the mobility of the molecules.     

Comparison of standard materials for the establishment of calibration curves in solid sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Direct determination of copper in powdered biological samples

Summary The selection of standard materials for the establishment of calibration curves is one of the most important problems in the direct analysis of biological samples by GFAAS. Three kinds of standard materials, NBS tomato leaves, coprecipitates with magnesium oxinate and Ni/DMG/PAN were investigated. It was found that it is possible to use both the NBS-SRM and the synthetic reference material prepared by coprecipitation with magnesium oxinate as standard materials for the direct determination of copper in several biological samples issued from NBS and NIES. However, too low results are obtained when the synthetic reference material prepared by coprecipitation with Ni/DMG/PAN is used. In order to clarify this, the effects of nickel and magnesium were examined and the role of magnesium was discussed.
