Determination of the population,depopulation and the anisotropic spin lattice relaxation rates in the photoexcited triplet state of phenazine. A light modulation-EPR study

The photoexcited triplet state of phenazine in toluene glasses at 35 K is investigated by light modulation-EPR spectroscopy. From the transient EPR spectra and the kinetics in the three canonical orientations (p = x, y, z) the rate parameters are determined. Thus, the depopulation rate constants k_p, the anisotropic spin lattice relaxation rate constants W_p, and the ratios between the population constants A_p are calculated: k_x = (2.2 ± 0.3) × 10² s^?1, k_y = (0.21 ± 0.04) × 10² s^?1, k_z = (0.06 ± 0.03) × 10² s^?1, W_x = (8.6 ± 0.9) × 10³ s^?1, W_y = (11.0 ± 1.0) × 10³ s^?1, W_z = (14.0 ± 1.4) × 10³ s^?1, and A_x: _Ay:A_z ≈ 1:0.04:0.02. It is concluded therefore that the in-plane spin state |τ_x > is the active one.     

Around random algebra

It is shown that there is a subalgebra of the measure algebra forcing dominating reals. Spatiotemporal model for the progression of transgressive dunes

Transgressive dune fields, which are active sand areas surrounded by vegetation, exist on many coasts. In some regions like in Fraser Island in Australia, small dunes shrink while large ones grow, although both experience the same climatic conditions. We propose a general mathematical model for the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation cover on sand dunes and focus on the dynamics of transgressive dunes. Among other possibilities, the model predicts growth parallel to the wind with shrinkage perpendicular to the wind, where, depending on geometry and size, a transgressive dune can initially grow although eventually shrink. The larger is the initial area the slower its stabilization process. The model’s predictions are supported by field observations from Fraser Island in Australia.     

A Scanning Electron Microscopy study of water in soil

Cold stage Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with a rapid cooling technique makes it possible to investigate the water phase within unsaturated porous media. It is thought that this technique preserves the main features of the micromorphology of the water menisci as it exists in the liquid phase in soils. Saddle-shaped elements, as well as pendular rings of water, were observed with concave and convex curvatures of the water-air interface. The hydraulic conductivity of an unsaturated soil may be inferred from SEM photographs. Observations of isolated water menisci indicate the existence of an immobile water domain. The surface geometry of the water menisci was analyzed quantitatively and surface tension and capillary pressure were determined.     

Minimum action solutions of some vector field equations

The system of equations studied in this paper is –u _i =g ⁱ (u) on ^d ,d2, withu: ^{d n} andg ⁱ (u)=G/u _i . Associated with this system is the action,S(u)={1/2|u|²–G(u)}.
